Abstract

Kang-fu-ling (KFL) is a polybotanical dietary supplement with antioxidant properties. This study aimed to evaluate the potential protective effects of KFL on cognitive deficit induced by high-power microwave (HPM) and the underlying mechanism for this neuroprotection. The electron spin resonance technique was employed to evaluate the free radical scavenging activity of KFL in vitro and KFL exhibited scavenging hydroxyl radical activity. KFL at doses of 0.75, 1.5 and 3 g kg-1 and vehicle were administered orally once daily for 14 days to male Wistar rats after being exposed to 30 mW cm-2 HPM for 15 minutes. KFL reversed HPM-induced memory loss and the histopathological changes in hippocampus of rats. In addition, KFL displayed a protective effect against HPM-induced oxidative stress and activated the nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and its target genes in the hippocampus of rats. The Nrf2-antioxidant response element (ARE) signaling pathway may be involved in the neuroprotective effects of KFL against HPM-induced oxidative stress. In summary, the dietary supplement KFL is a promising natural complex, which ameliorates oxidative stress, with neuroprotective effects against HPM.

The Compound Chinese Medicine “Kang Fu Ling” Protects against High Power Microwave-Induced Myocardial Injury

Zhang X, Gao Y, Dong J, Wang S, Yao B, et al. (2014) The Compound Chinese Medicine “Kang Fu Ling” Protects against High Power Microwave-Induced Myocardial Injury. PLoS ONE 9(7): e101532. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0101532.

Abstract

Background

The prevention and treatment of Microwave-caused cardiovascular injury remains elusive. This study investigated the cardiovascular protective effects of compound Chinese medicine “Kang Fu Ling” (KFL) against high power microwave (HPM)-induced myocardial injury and the role of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) opening in KFL protection.

Methods

Male Wistar rats (100) were divided into 5 equal groups: no treatment, radiation only, or radiation followed by treatment with KFL at 0.75, 1.5, or 3 g/kg/day. Electrocardiography was used to Electrophysiological examination. Histological and ultrastructural changes in heart tissue and isolated mitochondria were observed by light microscope and electron microscopy. mPTP opening and mitochondrial membrane potential were detected by confocal laser scanning microscopy and fluorescence analysis. Connexin-43 (Cx-43) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) were detected by immunohistochemistry. The expression of voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) was detected by western blotting.

Results

At 7 days after radiation, rats without KFL treatment showed a significantly lower heart rate (P<0 .01="" 1.5="" 7="" a="" after="" also="" and="" br="" compared="" consequent="" controls="" cx-43="" d="" day="" decrease="" decreased="" dye-treated="" evident.="" exhibited="" expression="" flavorfully="" fluorescence="" for="" g="" heart="" in="" increased="" inhibition="" intensities="" intensity="" irradiated="" j="" kfl="" kg="" membrane="" microwave-induced="" mitochondria="" mitochondrial="" morphology.="" mptp="" myocyte="" myocytes="" normal="" of="" opening="" point="" potential.="" preservation="" protein="" rate="" rats="" rearrangement="" reduced="" reduction="" reversed.="" rupture="" shift.="" shift="" significantly="" suggesting="" swelling="" than="" the="" to="" treatment="" untreated="" vdac="" was="" were="" with="">
Conclusion

Microwave radiation can cause electrophysiological, histological and ultrastructural changes in the heart. KFL at 1.5 g/kg/day had the greatest protective effect on these cardiovascular events. mPTP plays an important role in the protective effects of KFL against microwave-radiation-induced myocardial injury.

Excerpts

... we focused on “Kang Fu Ling” (KFL), a compound isolated from Chinese medicine astragalus, red peony, salvia, ophelia, and wolfberry.

The increased risk of damage to the mitochondria is associated with the massive opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) under pathological conditions of mitochondrial calcium overload [12][14]. We have found previously that KFL significantly decreased calcium level and activities of serum myocardial enzymes, such as creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), etc, after microwave radiation [15]. Thus, we hypothesized now that the inhibition of mPTP opening by KFL may be responsible for its myocardial protection effects from HPM-induced myocardial injury. Indeed, in this study we found that changes of several mPTP associated protein expression after microwave radiation could be reverted by KFL treatment. This study sheds new light on the role of mPTP in mitochondrial dysfunction and molecular basis of KFL protection.

Mitochondria are extremely important organelles in myocytes, accounting for 40–60% of the cell volume [18]. The mPTP multi-protein complex in the mitochondrial membrane is a key component in mitochondrial signal transduction [19]. Excessive mPTP opening leads to a reduction in the mitochondrial membrane potential and is associated with numerous heart diseases [20][21]. Under normal physiological condition, mPTPs are closed. The inner mitochondrial membrane is selectively permeable, allowing passage of some metabolic substrates and ions but not others. Under certain conditions, including calcium overload, oxidative stress, and impaired signal transduction, the mPTPs open and thus allow larger molecules to enter the mitochondria, causing increased osmolality of the mitochondrial matrix. This condition may lead to mitochondrial swelling, rupture of the outer mitochondrial membrane, leakage of pro-apoptotic proteins (such as cytochrome C) into the cytoplasm, abolition of the mitochondrial transmembrane potential, uncoupling of the respiratory chain from oxidative phosphorylation, discontinuation of Adenosinetriphosphate (ATP) synthesis, finally resulting in cell death [22][23].

... we now find that “ KFL”, a compound from traditional Chinese medicine protected rats from HPM-induced myocardial injury and also reverted mPTP opening induced by microwave radiation. After treatment of irradiated rats with 1.5g/kg/day KFL for 7 d, the heart rate recovered significantly (P<0 .01="" also="" and="" by="" fluorescence="" increased="" inhibition="" intensity="" j="" kfl="" membrane="" mitochondria="" mitochondrial="" moreover="" morphology.="" mptp="" myocytes="" normal="" of="" opening="" point="" potential.="" preservation="" reverted="" shift="" significantly="" span="" stained="" structures="" suggesting="" the="" treatment="" was="" were="">

... These findings support that mPTP plays an important role in the protective effects of KFL against microwave-radiation–induced myocardial injury. However, whether mPTP is the final effecter, how KFL acts on mPTP, and what other signaling pathways are involved in this action remain to be determined by further studies.

BSEM NEWSLETTER | VOLUME 22 | JULY 2014

BSEM NEWSLETTER  |  VOLUME 22  |  JULY 2014
View this email in your browser
Welcome to our new e-newsletter
Dear Members, Associates and Friends,

Since you last heard from us, there have been a number of changes to the BSEM. Firstly, we have a new website, thanks to the tireless efforts of Dr Franziska Meuschel, who has done a great job in designing and implementing a format we hope will be more user-friendly and informative. Do have a look at the results of Phase 1 and keep checking back for new events, announcements and other CPD opportunities. Phase 2 of the website will be underway soon.

Secondly, we ran a very successful conference in March, which was sold out – possibly a first for the BSEM! We have more events planned as you will see when you read on.

Thirdly, having listened to the comments from the 2012 EGM, we are now affiliated with a number of like-minded organisations and plan to stage some joint events in the future.

We hope you will enjoy our new newsletter even though it is rather light on articles…in fact, it is only thanks to Margaret Moss that we have any articles at all. Our slightly depleted Committee is busy formulating the training programme and planning the next BSEM events, so we are asking if you would be willing to help with the newsletter. We need someone to take on the light role of editor, and others to write occasional or regular articles on relevant topics of their choice (news, conference reports, summaries of interesting papers, rebuttals of newspaper headlines, case studies, etc).

The newsletter is a very important part of what the BSEM provides, and we are hoping maybe some of our retired or semi-retired members can get involved in its production. If you feel you might be able to help in any capacity please email   Dr Franziska Meuschel.
Electromagnetic Radiation and Health:
Evidence, Diagnosis And Management
Our Spring Update on 7 March was fully booked and a great succes. The conference provided, for the first time in the UK, a comprehensive overview of the issues around electrosensitivity and the chronic effects of electromagnetic radiation, presented by leading scientists, doctors and other experts in the field. It covered discussion of the science (from cancer to electrical hypersensitivity symptoms), as well as how to measure electromagnetic and radio-frequency microwave fields and how to reduce exposure. It included nutritional and other therapeutic interventions that can improve the life of patients suffering from electrosensitivity.

You can read more about the conference here. For anyone who missed it, the presentation slides and three DVD's containing all the lectures are now available in a conference pack. To order your copy, please call our Administrator Daksha Rajput on 07864 637723 or send us an email.
Next BSEM Events: 3./4. October 2014

PERNICIOUS ANAEMIA SOCIETY B12 APPEAL

We have recently been approached again by Martyn Hooper of the Pernicious Anaemia Society. They have around 7,000 members and growing, many of whom are seeking injected B12 supplementation. Can you help?

Martyn wants to add as many BSEM doctors as possible to his list of doctors willing to prescribe B12/Methylcobalamin.

I have said to him what I say to most such patients when they contact me: "We are not a dispensing service that will just sell them this or any other medicine. Vitamin B12 is a prescription-only medicine and requires a prescription from a doctor, which means the patient needs a proper consultation first. No consultation, no injection."

If they come via the PA Society they will have completed their questionnaire etc, and it is therefore likely that we would agree B12 is an appropriate treatment. But in such a consultation we would also be ethically obliged to inform them if we thought there were other health problems that needed addressing, and we might have to make prescribing B12 conditional on their addressing these other problems.

I am guessing, but I expect that you would all take much the same view on these issues, and have told Martyn so. If you are willing to see patients on this basis, and for the PA Society to include you on their list, please email Daksha.

Thank you very much,
Damien Downing

PS – A company called Oxford Biosciences offers Methylcobalamin powder for direct sale. They don't say anything about injecting it but the website does say: “Each vial contains 20mg pharmaceutical grade methylcobalamin in dry form. Please note: we do not provide saline.” I can't see why you would need saline other than to inject, and I think some people may be doing so. Although I have not investigated the matter or approached the company, I would advise against using, supporting or endorsing this unless you are absolutely clear that it is legal and acceptable, in which case please tell us and we will publish the facts.

French Senate passes bill to add precautions to wireless networks and mobile phones

July 25, 2014
The French senate has passed a bill in an attempt to introduce additional precautions for the use of wireless networks and mobile phones, such as, turning off wireless networks in primary schools when they are not in use and requiring new mobile phones to include specially designed hands-free kits for children.
“This amendment takes into account the rights of parents to be informed when their children are exposed to electromagnetic fields. It also follows the principles of common sense in switching wireless networks off when they’re not in use,” Joël Labbé, Greens Senator for the department Morbihan in Western France, said.
The heavily amended bill on “sobriety, transparency and consultation regarding exposure to electromagnetic fields” (in French) had previously passed through the National Assembly, or lower house, where it must return for a second vote in its current form before being mandated into French law.
A large part of the bill is in response to community concerns that children are more affected by exposure to electromagnetic fields than adults – a view which is not supported by international health authorities. In January 2014 the French National Academy of Medicine (Academie Nationale de Medecine) warned that the bill would unnecessarily increase public anxiety.
The bill requires that Wi-Fi networks in primary schools be switched off when not being used for educational purposes and also requires that when sold to a child under the age of 14, a mobile phone must include a hands-free kit specifically designed for children.
The bill also requires that operators reduce “outlier” points – which are areas where radio frequency and electromagnetic field exposure measure about the national average. French operators will be given a six month period to achieve these reductions.
If the bill is enacted, within a year the Government will be required to submit a report to Parliament intoelectro-hypersensitivity. Although, the European Commission’s expert independent advisory group – the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) –2014 opinion(pdf) specifically addresses electro-hypersensitivity and concludes:
“The symptoms that are attributed by people to RF [radio frequency] exposures can sometimes cause serious impairments to a person’s wellbeing. However, research conducted since the 2009 opinion adds weight to the conclusion that RF exposure is not the cause of these symptoms.”
Since first passing through the lower house in January the bill undergone a total of 55 amendments including using “sobriety” instead of “moderation” as the term was deemed to be difficult to define in a legal context.
The large number of amendments also means that the bill covers a variety of subjects broadly related to electromagnetic fields and mobile phone use.
The bill was sponsored by the Greens and was supported through the senate by the socialist and communist parties, 163 voted in favour of the bill with 149 in opposition.
The Greens also attempted to include a ban on the targeted advertising of tablets to children under the age of 14 but were not successful.

New Bluetooth-Enabled Smart Shoes Vibrate to Give You Directions

New Bluetooth-Enabled Smart Shoes Vibrate to Give You Directions

Nifty!

We can’t tell if these are better or worse than those godforsaken Vibram toe shoes.
Indian startup Ducere Technologies is about to bestow a new form of high-tech footwear unto the world, the Wall Street Journal reports. Called Lechal shoes, the Bluetooth-enabled smart footwear will sync up with an app on the user’s phone, which is connected to Google Maps. Once a user inputs their destination, the app will command the left and right shoes to vibrate, telling the user which way to turn to reach their destination.
“The shoes are a natural extension of the human body,” Ducere Technologies cofounder and CEO Krispian Lawrence told the WSJ. “You will leave your house without your watch or wristband, but you will never leave your house without your shoes.”
If you’re not a fan of the shoes’ look — can we all admit they resemble dorky water shoes? — users can remove the shoes’ Bluetooth-enabled insoles and insert them into a more stylish pair of kicks.
The smart shoes were originally conceived as away to help blind people find their way around more easily, but the company reportedly soon realized that with Lechal shoes, “joggers, mountain bikers or even tourists can plug in their destinations and not have to stop to check their phones as they move because the buzzing in their shoes will let them know when to turn.”
Also, lazy people who don’t feel like consulting their phone to find their way to their friend’s new apartment.
The shoes will reportedly become available in “select stores” in September, for $100 to $150. Mr. Lawrence told the WSJ he already has 25,000 pre-orders.
We have to admit, wearable tech that doesn’t hurt your eyes or get you kicked out of movie theaters sounds pretty good to us.

Swedish Neuroscientist and Associate Professor at the prestigious Karolinska institute in Stockholm Sweden, Olle Johansson, has written a letter to the Arizona Dept. of Health Servicesencouraging them to re-evaluate the risks of utility company smart grid policies.   Johansson urges them to share his skepticism of industry-funded research into the extremely controversial question of whether exposures from wireless devices- including “smart” meters-  are causing preventable damage to the public health.
He blasts those who dismiss scientific research showing harm from wireless technologies, saying essentially that it only takes one poisonous snake to bite you, and there are thousands of studies now showing changes in biology- many harmful- from microwave radiation exposures- even at a relatively small dose.  That makes the ubiquitous and high powered wireless pulses from smart meters particularly worrying.  Johansson says:

How Technology and EMFs Sabotage Your Health What are the other known effects of EMFs – from all sources

How Technology and EMFs Sabotage Your Health

What are the other known effects of EMFs – from all sources – to your health?
Solid evidence reveals these changes occur in your body as a result of exposure to electromagnetic fields:
  • Decreased pineal gland function with lowered melatonin production
  • Lowered thyroid hormones TSH, T3, and T4
  • Reduced production of testosterone
  • Increased mold growth and mycotoxin production in your home
  • Hastened growth and virulence of viruses, mold, yeast, Lyme spirochetes, and other biotoxins within your body
  • Impaired immune status (decreased IL-10, increased IL-1, IL-6, decreased NK cell activity)
And because of these dangerous changes from the effects of EMFs, there is scientific evidence of increases in…
  • Leukemia and other cancers, including breast cancer
  • Insomnia and sleep disturbances
  • Chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia
  • Hormone imbalance and deficiencies in women and men
  • Brain fog, headaches, and short term memory loss
  • Delayed and disturbed brain development in infants
  • Autism and other neurological developmental disorders in children
  • Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and motoneuron disease (ALS) in adults
  • Food and environmental allergies and asthma
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes
The body tissues most affected by electromagnetic fields are reproductive, breast, endocrine, and neurological tissues.
The good news is… You'll see improvement in all physical areas when you make changes to your homes' and offices' electromagnetic fields.

On Your Side: Samsung cell phone fire

On Your Side: Samsung cell phone fire

Posted: Jul 24, 2014 7:31 PM PDTUpdated: Jul 24, 2014 7:31 PM PDT

A 13-year-old North Texas girl was awoken in the night by a smoldering cell phone on the other side of her pillow, but the cell phone manufacturer says she did something they warn users about.

Ariel Tolfree loves using her Samsung Galaxy S4.

“It's really like, nice and pretty,” said Tolfree. “It's high tech.”

Every chance she gets, she texts her friends and gets on social media apps like Instagram and Twitter.

But during FOX 4’s visit with her, she had to borrow her dad's S3 phone, because her phone is burned so badly, it's barely recognizable.

”The whole phone melted,” said her dad, Thomas. “The plastic, the glass. You can't even really tell that it was a phone.”

Tolfree says her phone slipped under her pillow as she fell asleep, and the smell of something burning woke her up in the night.

“I didn't think much of it, so I went back to sleep, and then I woke up again and it was more prominent,” said Tolfree.

Her dad suspects the phone overheated, causing the battery to swell and start a fire.

The Tolfree family had seen FOX 4’s recent series of reports on swelling baby monitor batteries, which led to a nationwide recall.

The Tolfrees contacted Samsung, and then FOX 4.

“We have a reasonable expectation that the products we buy are going to be safe,” said Thomas.

A spokesperson for Samsung says their products are safe, and pointed out that the battery inside the phone was a replacement unit and not an original Samsung part.

Nevertheless, the company does agree there is a need for consumer education when it comes to rechargeable batteries. That’s exactly why they post a warning in their user guide, which specifically states covering one of their devices with bedding or other material could restrict airflow and cause a fire.

Tolfree and her dad, though, didn’t read that warning.

“If anything, they should put a big warning on it, like a cigarette label, if that’s the case,” said Thomas.

Tolfree says she doesn’t think people should sleep with their phones and instead, should put them on a nightstand.

The Samsung spokesperson said they take any instance of a battery fire very seriously.

They have requested the burned phone be sent to them so they can fully investigate.

FOX 4 will continue to follow up.

In the meantime, the phone, the bedding, the mattress and pillow will all be replaced by Samsung.
