Russian military have worked out non-lethal electromagnetic weapons that are presently undergoing tests.
Deputy Chief of the 12th Central Scientific-Research Institute of the Russian Defence Ministry Dmitry Soskov says that such weapons could prove very effective in local conflicts and also in the prevention of mass disorders in industrial cities Electromagnetic (radiation) weapons are a type of directed energy weapons, which use electromagnetic radiation to deliver heat, mechanical, or electrical energy. A directed ray burns people which leads to a pain shock. Powerful rays interact with the moisture of the upper layers of human skin. It is important that such rays do not affect the inner tissues and organs.
The USA is the leader in this field, and Russia has become the second state in the world that has started developing electromagnetic weapons. It has taken the scientists of the 12th Central Scientific-Research Institute much time to develop what could be termed a ray gun. And all of a sudden a statement has been made to the effect that Russia has such weapons, a military observer with the “Komsomolskaya Gazeta” newspaper, Viktor Batranets, says.
“ The newly-developed weapons have a range from 200 to 300 metres, while Americans say that their weapons are effective at a 500-metre distance. A powerful generator is needed to generate an electromagnetic ray, and Americans are currently working, aiming to increase the range. Russia is second in this race. Of importance here is the fact that this is a dual-purpose weapon.”
And still, this weapon is humane because it does not kill. Besides, it can be used by law-enforcement bodies for dispersing raging crowds of hooligans, an expert with the Institute for Political and Military Analysis, Alexander Khramchikhin, says.
“This is rather police than military weapons because if we deal with an armed enemy, he will easily destroy the radiation generator.”
Experts say that in the 21st century the military-scientific community will work in secret laboratories to develop new types of weapons, including ray, psychophysical, geophysical and wave weapons. Thus, we see that what was fantasy some time ago is becoming a reality today. Whether this is good or not, we can’t say with absolute certainty now. As you know, many secret military developments, in time, find use in the civilian sector to be used for peaceful purposes.
