The Connection Between Air Pollution and Cell Phones You've Never Heard About

The Connection Between Air Pollution and Cell Phones You've Never Heard About

In the 21st century, "show me the bodies" seems like a cruel and outdated foundation for public policy. Yet history is littered with examples -- like tobacco and asbestos -- where only after the death toll mounts is the price of inaction finally understood to exceed that of action.
In 19th century England, factory workers' warnings about crippling lung disease in teenagers working with asbestos were ignored until evidence of the epidemic toll of factory work became overwhelming more than a half-century later. Modern parallels are very much with us. Lung cancer in a young Chinese girl who grew up in polluted urban environment and breast cancer in young women who kept their cell phones in their bras are stunning indications of modern risks where we cannot afford to wait for broader public impacts before reining in exposures.
In 1996, analyses I conducted with the World Health Organization showed that residents in seven out of the world's 10 most polluted cities were in China where citizens were breathing dangerously polluted air. In 2013, a small girl in one industrialized zone bore the price of growing up breathing the equivalent of two packs of cigarette smoke a day. The Chinese government reported an extraordinary event -- an eight-year-old living next to a heavily trafficked road developed lung cancer.
Polluted air has hit China big and hard. Rates of lung cancer have grown fourfold in the past decade. Stifling hazy air pollution in China has shut down airports and tanker traffic. It is not unusual for levels of dangerous ultra-fine particles of PM2.5 to reach 1,000 micrograms per cubic meter, 40 times the World Health Organization's advised level.
The show-me-the-bodies approach that China has taken with respect to both tobacco smoking and air pollution is proving costly and painful. The country faces a public health catastrophe of increasing rates of lung cancer in its youth. To clean the air for the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings this month, the government shut down factories and pulled cars off the road. When that did not work sufficiently, they blocked access to data on air pollution. Tourism to the heavily polluted capitol city, Beijing is plummeting. American embassy personnel receive hardship pay for being stationed in Beijing. In order to maintain fitness, those who can afford to do so use electric treadmills in offices that use air filtration machines to clean the air. They also drive cars with special air filters, knowing that pollution inside vehicles stuck in traffic can be four to eight times higher than the surrounding air -- 4000-8000 micrograms per cubic meter. The irony of this situation is clear. People are using even more energy in order to clean up the dirty air they've created by driving and producing electricity using coal.
The situation now posed by cellphones and wireless transmitting devices around the world appears eerily reminiscent of what has transpired with tobacco, asbestos and air pollution. A brave young 21-year-old woman from eastern Pennsylvania, Tiffany Frantz has come forward with the story of her own rare cancerous breast tumors that formed right under the antennae of the cellphone she kept in her bra for many hours a day for five years. Normally breast cancer occurs in older women or younger ones with a family history of the disease. Tiffany is neither.  More cases are being reported, and physicians like Lisa Bailey, breast surgeon and former chief of the American Cancer Society for California are deeply concerned. "Young women should not get breast cancer and certainly do not develop several distinctive tumors in the center of the chest," she noted. "This is a wake-up call to keep phones off the body."

Recent studies find that those who begin using cell phones as teens have four to eight times more brain cancer as young adults. The Cleveland Clinic reports that men who keep phones in their pockets have fewer and sicker sperm.  Yale University studiesshow that offspring exposed prenatally to cellphone radiation have damaged brains and behavioral problems. Yet, these studies are strangely omitted from some official reviews on wireless radiation, like that recently carried out for Canada's Safety Code Six.
Recently Facebook apologized to users for treating them like lab animals by not getting their permission to conduct a social experiment that used postings to manipulate their emotions -- the results of which were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The apology is overdue and well-taken. Missing altogether are apologies from major telecom manufacturers and Internet providers to people like Tiffany. Instead they continue to market cell phones and other microwave-radiating products especially to infants, toddlers and young teens and fail to provide clear notice that such radiation increases the risks of cancers, reproductive harm and a host of other health problems.
In fact, buried within most smartphones are warnings that the FCC's thermally-based exposure levels can be exceeded the device is kept in the pocket or bra. For tablets the situation is even more worrisome -- with up to four microwave-radiating antennae, tablets are tested to avoid heating an adult male body when kept at a distance of about eight inches.
Surely an industry that has grown more than any in human history can do better. We need software and hardware to limit direct microwave radiation into the brain and body. We need clear information on ways to reduce exposures -- keeping tablets on tables not laps, downloading at a distance and then using them on airplane mode, and preferring wired over wireless connections. For towers, routers and other devices, we need a system to keep exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) -- just like diagnostic radiation; and we especially need a way to provide safety to children in schools and those who are especially sensitive to exposures.
Whenever possible, wired is better than wireless. As Verizon notes wired networks are faster, safer, more secure and also less costly.
Tiffany Frantz is sending us a wake up call. Let's hope we hear it soon. The show-me-the-bodies approach cannot work for a technology developed less than a generation ago, that now finds the world with more cell phones than toilets or people. To demand ever more proof of harm now before taking steps to reduce dangers in the next generation puts us and our children in an uncontrolled, potentially disastrous experiment. Who's going to apologize for that?
CORRECTION: A previous version of this post incorrectly stated that Ms. Frantz's tumors had formed after seven years. The amount of time was five years.

Electronic Black Plague - my letter to the editor

Thu Dec 4, 2014 4:19 pm (PST) . Posted by: "Jenny Miller"

In response to this article in the Chico News and Review.

http://www.newsreview.com/chico/meter-maladies/content?oid=15663343

In general, i think your reporter did an excellent job in the article "Meter Maladies."  As a former resident of Paradise, CA, i wanted to add a bit about my own experience.  I had an elderly golden retriever who was in remarkably good health, as a result of my giving her home-cooked organic food and supplements.  Within weeks after the installation of a smart meter (at the time i had no idea what a smart meter was, or any health problems associated with them) my dog started exhibiting such extreme pain and symptoms of disability that i had to have her put down.  I know of someone in a nearby town, the housemate of a friend, who despite her very advanced years was managing to hang on and enjoy some quality of life. Within a week after the smart meter was installed she was dead.

Some years later i had moved to Santa Rosa, CA.  I lived in a cottage complex, and i had opted out of having a smart meter, even though the meter for my cottage was not located directly on my cottage, but with a collection of other meters a few cottages away.  By then i understood that the health-destroying effects of the meter's pulsations were carried though the wiring into my living space.  (True for "smart" gas and water meters too, since the pulsations are carried through the pipes.) One of my neighbors, a seemingly healthy man in his forties who was doing work in construction, died suddenly in his sleep.  He had five smart meters located on the side of his small cottage.

I noted with interest the PG and E representative in the article who said categorically that smart meters do not cause fires.  Recently 70,000 smart meters in Portland, OR were recalled as being potential fire hazards.  When i attended a CPUC hearing a couple of years ago re reconsideration of the California smart meter opt out program (this one was held in Santa Rosa), a PG and E installer testified that he noticed a large number of fires being caused by the smart meters.  When he cautioned his superiors about this frightening problem, he was, of course, fired.  You can see his testimony for yourself in the brilliant, multi-award- winning documentary called "Take Back Your Power"(at www.takebackyourpower.net).  At all of the CPUC opt out hearings held throughout California, the rooms were packed with citizens testifying about having their health destroyed (and in some cases having to sleep in  their cars) as a result of the woefully mis-named smart meters. It's not just the meters which are impacting our health.  Cell phone towers are causing people to die like flies in the immediate vicinity of the towers.  (See the above mentioned film for more info about these "cancer clusters.")

Want scientific proof of the health effects?  As the article mentioned, there are hundreds of peer reviewed articles in the Bioinitiative Report (www.bioinitiative.org), as well as the websites for the CA Safety Coalition and stopsmartmeters.  The sad part is, we don't NEED wi fi for fast internet.  Ethernet and DSL are often just as fast or faster.  We don't NEED to be "connected" to our iphone every hour of the day and night.  Corded landlines provide wonderful non-lethal phone connections. Above all, children should not be allowed to play with electronic phones and gadgets throughout the day.  Their developing bodies and thin skulls make them even more susceptible to this toxic radiation than the rest of us.  It sometimes takes ten to fifteen years for these cancers to develop and the epidemic of deaths (truly an Electronic Black Plague) is just now beginning.

Jet Blue accommodations of EHS persons - information and action plan/suggestion from Ms Deborah Kopald

Jet Blue accommodations of EHS persons - information and action plan/suggestion from Ms Deborah Kopald in the USA

Dear Everyone on my mailing list,

Today I have received the following very interesting information and action plan/suggestion from Ms Deborah Kopald [deborah_kopald@ymail.com] in the USA.

Jet Blue has an ADA division (Americans with Disabilities Act)
1-855-232 5463 (US phone number)

Jet Blue also doesn't plan to put Wi-Fi in its short and medium duration flights until 2016, though it has been installed on long haul flights, e.g. NY to SF.

Meanwhile, people with EHS should call the ADA division phone number and request the following:

-Wi-Fi OFF on the plane

- board other passengers on the plane first, get everyone stowed away, captain makes announcement to power down phones, then board person with EHS

-on egress- wait till plane taxis to gate, get person with EHS off first before allowing phones to be powered on

-secure area at either end - room that is secure or area without Wi-Fi- so person with EHS doesn't need to wait by the gate with the Wi-Fi and ppl on their phones.

-airline rep to meet person at airport doors to escort them to special check-in process and secure suite of rooms away from Wi-Fi, then escort them to the gate when it is time to board.

-on egress- airline rep to meet person and if it is a large airport that requires a tram ride with other people to exit, they should escort the person with EHS separately from other people (scrolling on their phones in tight space, e.g. the tram)

1-855-232 5463 (US phone number)

Thus, in summary, people with EHS should request the following:

-Wi-Fi off on the plane
- board other passengers on the plane first, get everyone stowed away, captain makes announcement to power down phones, then board person with EHS
-on egress- wait till plane taxis to gate, get person with EHS off first
-secure area at either end - room that is secure or area without Wi-Fi- so person with EHS doesn't need to wait by the gate with the Wi-Fi and ppl on their phones.
-airline rep to meet person at airport doors to escort them to special check-in process and secure room

Ms Deborah Kopald [deborah_kopald@ymail.comwants you to email her if you have done this and what the result of the conversation was.

Ultimately, she will keep a list and ask everyone who has done this - when the time is right - to contact her to set up a class action lawsuit if the airline refuses.

Good luck!

With my very best regards
Yours sincerely

Hi,

I think that this deserves to be supported!

Best wishes,
Lennart Hardell

Here's the petition:

IARC, WHO: Move Radio Frequency Radiation from Class 2b to Class 1

Stop downplaying the health effects and cancer risks from RF EMF radiation! Please move Radio Frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from Class 2b "Possible Human Carcinogen" to Class 1, "Carcinogenic to Humans" now! There is enough cancer, illness and death around the world due to these emissions in addition to an overwhelming body of science showing cancer amongst other very serious health effects, all from this ubiquitously propagated but deadly RF radiation to warrant this increase in classification! Stop playing with the planet's health and life!! Move this radiation to Class 1 now!

"Due to the relationship with survival the classification of IARC is strengthened and RF-EMF should be regarded as human carcinogen requiring urgent revision of current exposure guidelines." Dr. Lennart Hardell, Swedish Oncologist, MD PhD, Orebro University Hospital, Orebro, Sweden and

Self-Reporting of Symptom Development From Exposure to Radiofrequency Fields of Wireless Smart Meters in Victoria, Australia: A Case Series.

Altern Ther Health Med. 2014 Nov;20(6):28-39.

Self-Reporting of Symptom Development From Exposure to Radiofrequency Fields of Wireless Smart Meters in Victoria, Australia: A Case Series.

Abstract

Context • In 2006, the government in the state of Victoria, Australia, mandated the rollout of smart meters in Victoria, which effectively removed a whole population's ability to avoid exposure to human-made high-frequency nonionizing radiation. This issue appears to constitute an unprecedented public health challenge for Victoria. By August 2013, 142 people had reported adverse health effects from wireless smart meters by submitting information on an Australian public Web site using its health and legal registers.

Objective
• The study evaluated the information in the registers to determine the types of symptoms that Victorian residents were developing from exposure to wireless smart meters. Design
• In this case series, the registers' managers eliminated those cases that did not clearly identify the people providing information by name, surname, postal address, and/or e-mail to make sure that they were genuine registrants. Then they obtained consent from participants to have their deidentified data used to compile the data for the case series. The author later removed any individual from outside of Victoria.
Participants • The study included 92 residents of Victoria, Australia. Outcome Measures
• The author used her medical experience and judgment to group symptoms into clinically relevant clusters (eg, pain in the head was grouped with headache, tinnitus was grouped with ringing in the ears). The author stayed quite close to the wording used in the original entries. She then calculated total numbers and percentages for each symptom cluster. Percentages were rounded to the nearest whole number. Results
• The most frequently reported symptoms from exposure to smart meters were (1) insomnia, (2) headaches, (3) tinnitus, (4) fatigue, (5) cognitive disturbances, (6) dysesthesias (abnormal sensation), and (7) dizziness. The effects of these symptoms on people's lives were significant.

Conclusions • Review of some key studies, both recent and old (1971), reveals that the participants' symptoms were the same as those reported by people exposed to radiofrequency fields emitted by devices other than smart meters. Interestingly, the vast majority of Victorian cases did not state that they had been sufferers of electromagnetic hypersensitivity syndrome (EHS) prior to exposure to the wireless meters, which points to the possibility that smart meters may have unique characteristics that lower people's threshold for symptom development.

Posted under: BusinessBusiness & Finance

The second edition of the West African Conference on Electromagnetic Field Exposure and Health, EMF, will for the first time address the issue of myths and reality of the possible effect of EMF to human. The annual conference, which is hosted by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, which will be held in Lagos, has as its theme: EMF in a Highly Connected Society: understanding the myths and realities”.

According to a statement from the NCC, this second conference will provide a platform for policy makers, regulators, legislators, operators, mobile equipment manufacturers, consumer groups and other stakeholders to raise the level of understanding about potential adverse health effects, if any, of mobile communication aimed at establishing a harmonised EMF policy in the West African sub-region.

The NCC said that the theme is in line with the political effort to adopt WHO Model Legislation and ICNIRP exposure limits in Nigeria saying, “It is expected that this will function as a role model for other sub-regions”.

The Minister of Communication Technology, Dr. Omobola Johnson will deliver the keynote address at the conference, while ministers from other concerned jurisdictions such as the Science and Technology; Health; and Environment will also participate at the event.

Conclusions
The following means of action of HF EMR at non-thermal intensities on biological systems are possible:

1) Frequencies of 109 to 1012 Hz are similar to the frequencies of oscillation of protein molecules, DNA and RNA; of membranes and other parts of cells; and of conformational transitions in enzymes, which creates the possibility
of resonant absorption of HF EMR.

2) The organism as a whole may have its own resonant frequencies: from living cells to human beings [Sit’ko and Yanenko].

3) EHF fields, modulated at low frequencies close to the rhythms of the brain, heart and internal organs, have a strengthening action. Modulation at infra-frequencies in the range of 5-16 Hz exerts a strongly negative effect on humans and animals.

4) Absorption of EMF in biologically active points is many times more effective than in other parts of the skin, and this energy influences the internal organs and the body as a whole through the system of Chinese meridians.

5) At the moment of cellular division, genetic information becomes “open,” chromosomes become immobile and far more susceptible to the influence of HF EMR. An external resonance field may induce expression of genes connected with cancer and change the program of cellular development.

6) Manifestation of the effects of EMF depends on conditions of health and age: healthy adults have minimal sensitivity; embryos, children, elderly persons, and those with hidden psychological or physical disorders experience significant effects, all the way to lethal outcomes.

7) Combination with other deleterious factors: ionizing radiation, toxic substances, geomagnetic anomalies and stress significantly increase the effects of HF EMR.

8) Accumulated discord in the work of cells during chronic and quasiperiodic irradiation leads to confused biorhythms, scattered attention, indistinct phases of sleep and arousal; the body is not in a condition to make a recovery.

9) The effects of HF EMR occur through the hormonal system and immune system with amplification and accumulation of effects; and through catalysts of cellular respiration and biosynthesis. These reactions are non-specific, and it is often difficult to connect them with the fact of irradiation by EMF at non-thermal intensities.

10) Occurrence of a narcotic-type dependency (by stimulating production of endorphins) is possible under regular irradiation with HF EMR. Much research in the field of biological effects of EMF makes it possible to define the most sensitive systems in the human body: nervous, immune, endocrine and reproductive. These systems of the body are critical. The reactions of these systems must without fail be considered in evaluating the risks of EMF exposure to a population.

On the level of a nerve cell, of structural formations for transmission of nerve impulses (synapses), and on the level of isolated nerve structures, significant deviations occur during exposure to EMF of low intensities. Higher nervous activities, including memory, change in people having contact with EMF. These persons may have a tendency to
develop stress reactions. Certain structures of the brain have heightened sensitivity to EMF. Changes in the permeability of the blood-brain barrier may lead to unexpected, unfavorable effects. Especially high sensitivity to EMF is displayed in the embryonic nervous system.
