Vellore: Children should not be exposed to electromagnetic waves, microwaves, high-tension cables, high-powered computer frames frequently, to prevent them from getting affected by cancer, especially brain cancer, says Dr Kogelen Govvin, chief regional DNA repair scientist heading Aaride International Inc’s DNA repair/anti-aging & disease prevention division, London.
Dr Kogelen, here on a short visit, said life is precious, and especially the younger generation should not get affected by cancer and brain tumour. He said inhalation of toxic materials and exposure to radioactive materials and taking carcinogenic food damages the DNA and initiates DNA mutation, leading to leukemia.
Dr Kogelen is perhaps the first Indian of Malaysia origin to be appointed chief regional DNA repair scientist at Aaride International Inc’s division. He got interested in doing something about ageing on seeing his father Govindasamy use plant tissue culture techniques in his rubber plants.
This helped him submit his M.Sc. thesis on the effects of Eurycoma longifolia (botanical name of a flowering plant native to Indonesia, Malaysia). In his D. Phil dissertation, he studied the changes to plasma containing HIV (retrovirus).
He was interested in DNA properties, and cellular ageing playing a major role in the prevention of DNA deterioration due to “human gene switch syndrome” leading to deadly diseases like cancer.
Dr Kogelen is to set up a regional centre of excellence in the field of DNA repair in Asian countries.
