Ronald Herberman, founding director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, died this weekend at age 72.
At the time of his death, Dr. Herberman was chief medical officer and senior vice president for research and development for TNI Bio Tech, Inc. in Bethesda, Md. He also served as chairman of the Environmental Health Trust, which examines environmental health risks and ways to reduce those risks.
The company announced his death in a press release dated Monday.
He is survived by his wife, Harriet, two children and three grandchildren.
Dr. Herberman came to Pittsburgh in 1985 after leading ground-breaking research at the National Cancer Institute on ways to help a patient's immune system fight cancer.
In the next several years, he helped build the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute into an internationally-recognized center for cancer research and treatment.
Dr. Herberman's interests later turned to environmental health risks and in 2008 he issued what is believed to be the first advisory warning of the long-term health risks of cell phone use because of exposure to electromagnetic radiation.
Dr. Herberman stepped down as director of the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute in early 2009.
