In India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, bird deaths are rising. Some local believe that cell phone towers are to blame... that may be emitting high amounts of radiation, causing miscarriages in birds.
Cell phone radiation is leading to bird deaths and a decrease in their population in the Dharmapuri region of India's Tamil Nadu state.
The region has witnessed a drastic fall in the bird population over the past couple of months. Environmentalists are convinced that the abundance of cell phone towers is the cause.
[Sarvanan, Environmentalist]:
"The main reason for their extinction seems to be the cell phone towers that emit harmful radiation, which affect these tiny creatures. Experts have proved this. Also, the egg laying birds often have miscarriages due to the radiation."
Most of these birds have started to disappear over the past five years... ever since the towers were put on top of buildings.
Some locals think that the radiation from the cell towers could harm people in the near future.
[Paramasivam, Concerned with Towers]:
"The main reason behind the extinction of these birds is the harmful rays emitted by the cell phone towers. And we strongly believe it is now the birds' turn, but very soon this will also affect humans."
The rising death of birds in the area has raised concerns among environmentalists who fear that it might lead to a fall in the numbers of certain rare species of birds.
