Sushant Lok plaint on mobile towers
TNN | Jun 9, 2014, 04.03 AM ISTGURGAON: Mobile towers installed in Sushant Lok 1 have got the residents worried about their effects on health. Residents filed a complaint at the district commissioner's office on Friday to stop installation of new towers and remove some of the existing ones.
"Many residents and commercial complexes have given space to mobile companies to put up towers. Not only do these companies pay a good amount to residents and owners of the commercial complexes, but they also promise to provide free electricity through generators," said Sudhir Sachdeva, chairman, residents' welfare association, Sushant Lok 1.
A resident of Block C who had recently approached HUDA has made several efforts to stop the installation of new towers. "When I contacted the HUDA office, I got to know all mobile towers in Sushant Lok 1 are illegal. Laws are simply ignored by the mobile phone companies. Residents themselves have been trying to stop the installation as the authorities have not taken any strict action so far."
Another resident, Radhika Singh, who refused to put her child in a school due because it had a mobile tower nnearby, said, "We have been living under constant threat.". Recently, a 22-year-old boy lost his life due to a sudden heart attack. A mobile tower is installed on the terrace of his neighbour's house. Doctors say that one of the reasons behind the sudden heart attack could be harmful radiations emitted by the tower. Children are more sensitive to these radiations. I don't understand how mobile towers can be put so close to schools?"
Dr Aditya Gupta, neurosurgeon, Medanta said, "As of now we can't relate mobile towers directly to cardiac attacks or cancer. But I think in the next two to three years, the studies are likely to prove that cases of cancer have risen among those living near mobile towers. Authorities adopt the safest norms for installation of mobile towers, unlike in countries." He also advised people to use insulation material to cut down on the effect of radiation on our health
Sachdeva says that the RWA is planning to put an instrument in Sushant Lok 1 to measure the ill-effects of mobile towers. The instrument will be provided by an NGO in Mumbai.
