Training Project on Environmental Sensitivities

Training Project on Environmental Sensitivities

The Environmental Health Association of Québec (EHAQ) is a non-profit organization whose goal is to help those suffering from Environmental Sensitivities (ES), that also promotes ecological and least-toxic strategies for preserving our environment for future generations.

ES is a painful, chronic, multi-system condition that can develop in people of all ages, often following either a single massive exposure or repeated low level exposures to chemicals, electromagnetic radiation and other triggers released into the environment. Sufferers then become sensitive to substances or phenomena in their everyday environment at levels well below what would be considered to be acceptable to most people. Sensitivity reactionscan be triggered by scented products, cleaning products, laundry detergents, paints, petrochemicals, cigarette smoke, pesticides, pets, plants, fuels, electromagnetic radiation, molds and foods. This can cause sufferers to become unable to function in society, and frequently leads to poverty and homelessness.

In Québec 179 000 people have been diagnosed with ES, and there are likely many more who are undiagnosed. There is no treatment available in Quebec, but we help sufferers to better manage their condition.

It has become apparent that there is a need for simple, clear and exact information in French. One of the frequent side effects of ES on the individual and his or her entourage is isolation and a diminution of activities. It is therefore important to take this information to the individuals in their regions by offering the possibility of participating in a workshop in their own region.

In order to help people who suffer from ES, in collaboration with UQAM, TELUQ and UQAM’s Service aux Collectivités, ASEQ-EHAQ will be holding training workshops on the biological and legal aspects of ES starting in the fall of 2012, in ten regions of Quebec. The three main themes of the workshop will be

1) Understanding the illness and its context,
2)  Rights related to the workplace and housing, and
3) Methods, tools and resources to better manage this condition.

The workshop will be grounded in medical, biological and legal facts.

The workshop’s main goal is to help people suffering from ES become more conscious of their needs, better manage their medical condition, and prepare to retake their place in society. These workshops are therefore a place for recognition and sharing among participants. A realistic and constructive approach is used in order to increase the person’s ability to act by giving them simple and effective tools to assimilate complex content.
The number of spaces is limited.
