The Miseducation of America on 5G: The New York Times Gets It Spectacularly Wrong

When William J. Broad, a Pulitzer-Prize winning New York Times science writer, strangely mangles information on the dangers of 5G, this plays right into the hands of those determined to advance this never-tested technology without serious examination of its long-term impact on human health and the environment.
The recent headline of the NYTimes trumpeted 5G as the “health hazard that isn’t.” Not so fast. A close examination of claims in that article indicates that it is time for a reset on the march to the latest wireless technology as the consequences could not be more monumental.
Ten Corrections to William J. Broad’s
“The 5G Health Hazard That Isn’t” New York Times July 16, 2019

1. First of all, contrary to Broad’s claim, Dr. Curry’s report and graph on wireless radiation risks to children in schools in 2000 were not the central foundation for scientific concerns regarding wireless radiation.
2. In fact, in contradiction to Broad’s assertion, Curry’s graph showing greater absorption with higher frequency of wireless radiation up to 3G was correct and directly applicable to schools.

  • The Wireless industry is clear that for 5G phones, routers, and systems to work, they must use a full range of frequencies, from low to middle to high, as well as higher millimeter-wave frequencies never used in mass-scale before (from 600 MHz up to around 50,000 MHz and higher into Terahertz for 6G). T-Mobile, for example, will use 600 MHz while AT&T is using 39 GHz in it’s 5G test cities.
4. Broad errs in reporting the assertion of radiation physicists that radio waves become “safer” at higher frequencies because human skin purportedly “acts as a barrier.” The skin does not just act as a mirror deflecting the radiation.
  • 5G’s faster mmWave frequencies between 30 and 300 GHz are absorbed into and just below the surface of the skin, and such exposure is biologically impactful. That is why the U.S. Defense Department developed weapons with high-powered millimeter waves as seen here. The Active Denial System (ADS), also known as the Pain-Ray, was deployed to Afghanistan, tested in prisons and considered as a pirate deterrent in Somalia.
  • Wireless 5G networks will use beams of radiation like the Pain-Ray, and include Massive MIMO (multiplex in and multiplex out) and phased arrays meaning each installation could consist of numerous antennas simultaneously sending and receiving beaming waves into neighborhoods.
5. Contrary to what the NYTimes article asserts, studies find that as RF frequency increases past 10 GHz, the intensity of the rate of absorption does increase, despite the shallow penetration.
  • Researchers investigating the impact to the skin from 5G’s higher millimeter frequencies are “raising the warning flag” on the safety of 5G after finding that human sweat ducts absorb these frequencies at much higher rates than in surrounding skin structures — acting as tiny helical EMF antennas to magnify these signals.

Swiss government and private sector researchers caution that 5G frequencies can cause big increases in temperature that “may lead to permanent tissue damage after even short exposures.”
6. Contrary to the NYTimes statement, “mainstream scientists continue to see no evidence of harm from cellphone radio waves,” more than248 experts in the field of bioelectromagnetics have asked the United Nations to call for a moratorium on 5G.
  • They note that while exposures have risen many fold, so have studiesshowing damage to human health and the environment.
7. Broad neglected to mention industry connections of several of his sources.
  • Several of the experts quoted in this article have in fact publishedresearch directly funded by the wireless industry or by NYU Wireless, “an R&D arm” of NYU’s industry affiliates, which include AT&T, Sprint and Crown Castle — the very companies spearheading the rollout of 5G.
8. Broad cites the lack of a marked uptick in brain cancer rates as proof of RF safety. This misunderstands the long latencies for brain cancer and also fails to consider that several other cancers plausibly tied with cellphone use are increasing in young adults.
  • Cancers do not occur immediately after exposure to a causative agent and usually take years to several decades to be diagnosed. Widespread rises are not expected to be evident in today’s statistics.
9. Broad’s article fails to report on a number of major policy efforts to restrict 5G due to concerns about the lack of safety data, including the following developments:

The European Environmental Authority ranked the impact of 5G as “high” due to “the possibility of unintended biological consequences.”

  • Cyprus just launched a major public educational campaign to reduce children’s wireless exposures (as have severalcountries) and has removedwireless from the pediatric intensive care units of Archbıshop Makarıos III Hospital.

    10. Broad refuses to correct the inaccuracies of his articles and the Times persists in demeaning critics and concerned citizens.
    Despite ample documentation of the need for corrections, the NYT refusesto correct their misleading and deceptive articles about 5G and cellphone radiation.
    Broad’s 5G articles have been picked up by medical platforms and medianationwide, and are invoked as proof of safety by the former FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler who is also former Head of the CTIA-The Wireless Association. A 2015 Harvard Report documents how the heavy Congressional lobbying of the multibillion-dollar wireless industry coupled with the revolving door between industry and government has resulted in undue industry influence into the science and policy of wireless radiation.




    The NYT article included a belittling graphic showing people fleeing in fear from a cell tower, mocking those who are working for safe neighborhoods and schools and the many nations that reduce children’s exposure and do not permit towers near schools and hospitals, but did not reference a major investigative journalism analysis indicating serious grounds for concern.


    Broad tweeted the story with “He was a very bright guy.”
    As Senator Patrick Moynihan stated, “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.” We call upon the New York Times to correct the misinformation.

    Pampers Joins Huggies in Selling “Smart” Diapers Despite Health Warnings, Privacy and Security Issues


    Activist Post reported about Huggies’ “Smart Diapers” in May.  Now Proctor & Gamble has announced they will start selling their own “Smart” diapers in the fall.  Unlike the Huggies line, their diapers will only track pee (not poo) but they will also track babies’ sleep patterns.
    The Lumi by Pampers line, which Pampers says has a waitlist ahead of its US launch this fall, includes an activity sensor that secures to a “landing” on the front of a baby’s diaper. It comes with a baby monitor and a 10-day supply of diapers. The sensor works with a corresponding app to log the kid’s pee and identify patterns. Additional packs of Lumi by Pamper diapers will be sold separately. Pricing has not been finalized.
    Parents using the Lumi diapers will in theory not have to worry about checking any of that because they’ll get smartphone alerts. The app will display one of three diaper statuses: dry, wet, very wet.
    Like anything “Smart”, there are concerns about privacy and security.  Some experts are also saying these diapers could cause more harm than good.  No sh*t, Sherlock:
    1. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other health experts have been issuing warnings about kids’ exposure to cell phone and wireless radiation for many years.
    2. Earlier this year 250 scientists signed a petition that warns against numerous devices that emit Radio Frequency (RF) Radiation (used in WiFi and Bluetooth)
    3. No safe level of wireless radiation exposure that has been determined for children or pregnant women.
    “Smart” Diapers are also a great source of “Surveillance Capitalism” for any company who decides to sell customer data to 3rd parties.
    Anyone thinking that “Smart” Diapers smell like legal trouble is right on the money.  Unfortunately, babies with foolish tech-crazed parents are defenseless in the meantime.

    Got Radiation Poisoning? 40% of the US' honey bee colonies died between October 2018 and April 2019

    It may feel more natural to fret about wolves, sea turtles, and white rhinos dying off than it is to feel remorse about vanishing bugs.
    But the loss of insects is a dire threat — one that could trigger a "catastrophic collapse of Earth's ecosystems," according to a February 2019 study.
    The research, the first global review of its kind, looked at 73 historical reports on insect declines around the world and found the total mass of all insects on the planets is decreasing by 2.5% per year.
    If this trend continues unabated, the Earth may not have any insects at all by 2119.
    "In 10 years you will have a quarter less, in 50 years only half left and in 100 years you will have none," Francisco Sanchez-Bayo, a study coauthor and researcher at the University of Sydney, told The Guardian.
    The latest evidence of this trend's progression comes from honey bees: Researchers from the University of Maryland reported this week that about 40% of the US' honey bee colonies died between October 2018 and April 2019 — the highest winter loss in 13 years .
    A recent study published in the journal Nature Communications found similar problems in the UK; one-third of 353 wild bee and hoverfly species there experienced declines between 1980 and 2013.
    The loss of bees and other bugs is scary, since insects are food sources for countless bird, fish, and mammal species. Pollinators like bees and hoverflies also perform a crucial role in fruit, vegetable, and nut production.

    A tough winter for honey bees

    The worst year overall for honey bee die-off was between 2012 and 2013, when 45% of US colonies perished. But this past winter saw the most severe bee decline ever recorded during that season.
    The University of Maryland researchers surveyed 4,700 beekeepers, who in total manage 320,000 of the 2.69 million honey bee hives in the country.
    "These results are very concerning, as high winter losses hit an industry already suffering from a decade of high winter losses," Dennis vanEngelsdorp, a University of Maryland scientist and president for the Bee Informed Partnership, said in a press release.

    Honey bees pollinate $15 billion worth of US food crops, the AP reported. One-third of everything Americans eat comes from pollinators like honey bees, according to the US Department of Agriculture.
    Yet every year, a chunk of honey bee colonies die off from a combination of decreasing crop diversity, poor beekeeping practices, and loss of habitat, NPR reported. Pesticides like neonicotinoids and pests like Varroa destructor mites can kill them in them droves, causing colony collapses.

    Sanchez-Bayo and the other researchers behind the February 2019 study found that bee species in the UK, Denmark, and North America have taken major hits — bumblebees, honey bees, and wild bee species are all declining. In the US, the number of honey-bee colonies dropped from 6 million in 1947 to 2.5 million just six decades later.
    But their analysis on all insects in Europe and North America, not just honey bees.
    Overall, they estimated that 41% of insect species are in decline, 31% are threatened (according to criteria set by the International Union for Conservation of Nature), and 10% are going locally extinct.
    That extinction rate is eight times faster than the observed pace of extinction for mammals, birds, and reptiles.

    Moths and butterflies are disappearing, their results suggested — between 2000 and 2009, the UK lost 58% of butterfly species on farmed land.
    Dragonflies, mayflies, and beetles appear to be dying off as well.
    When looking at all animal populations planet-wide (not just insects), according to a 2017 study, the Earth appears to be undergoing a process of "biological annihilation." That analysis estimated that "as much as 50% of the number of animal individuals that once shared Earth with us are already gone."
    This rapid decline in global biodiversity is sometimes called the sixth extinction, since it's the sixth time in the history of life on Earth that the planet's fauna has experienced a major collapse in numbers.
    In the past, mass extinctions have been caused by the emergence of ice ages or asteroid collisions. This mass extinction, however, is driven by human activities — namely deforestation, habitat destruction, mining, and carbon-dioxide emissions that contribute to global warming.
    "As insects comprise about two-thirds of all terrestrial species on Earth, the above trends confirm that the sixth major extinction event is profoundly impacting life forms on our planet," the study authors wrote.

    'Catastrophic consequences for ... the survival of mankind'

    The study emphasized that insects are "essential for the proper functioning of all ecosystems" as food sources, crop pollinators, pest controllers, and nutrient recyclers in soil.
    "If insect species losses cannot be halted, this will have catastrophic consequences for both the planet's ecosystems and for the survival of mankind," Sanchez-Bayo told The Guardian.
    Timothy Schowalter, a professor of entomology at Louisiana State University, told Business Insider that substantial declines in insect populations threaten the food, timber, and fiber production that humanity's survival depends on.
    "The pollinator declines jeopardize 35% of our global food supply, which is why European countries are mandating protection and restoration of pollinator habitats," he said.
    The authors of the K study noted that the geographic range of bee and hoverfly species there declined by 25% — that's a net loss of about 11 species per square kilometer, primarily due to a reduction in the pollinators' habitats. Only one in ten surveyed species had a wider range.

    "The declines in Britain can be viewed as a warning about the health of our countryside," the UK study's lead author Gary Powney told The Guardian.
    Schowalter added that the many birds, fish, and other vertebrates that rely on insects for food would disappear if their prey does.
    "Insects are often maligned, or at least their significant contributions to ecosystem productivity and delivery of ecosystem services are underappreciated," Schowalter said. "In short, if insects and other arthropods do decline, our survival would be threatened."

    Farming practices are behind the insect die-off

    This isn't the first time scientists have called attention to plummeting insect populations.
    In 2017, a study indicated that 75% of Germany's flying insects had disappeared since the 1990s. Another recent study showed that the total biomass of arthropods — creatures such as insects, spiders, and lobsters that have jointed legs but no backbone — in Puerto Rico has taken a nose dive since the 1970s.
    Pesticides, fertilizers, and heavy land use for farming are primary drivers of this decline.
    "Overall, the systematic, widespread and often superfluous use of pesticides in agricultural and pasture land over the past 60 years has negatively impacted most organisms, from insects to birds and bats," the authors of the new study wrote.
    They added: "The conclusion is clear: unless we change our ways of producing food, insects as a whole will go down the path of extinction in a few decades."
    Sanchez-Bayo told The Guardian he thinks insecticides such as neonicotinoids and fipronil are especially damaging.
    "They sterilize the soil, killing all the grubs," he said.

    Climate-change-driven temperature shifts are playing a role in insect deaths, too, though it's not the main factor.
    "So far, declines have been related more to land-use changes, especially agricultural intensification, forest fragmentation and urban development, than to temperature change," Schowalter said.
    To address the steep decline in insect populations, Sanchez-Bayo and his coauthors are pushing for initiatives to restore insect habitats and cut down the amount of chemicals used in agricultural practices.
    "It is imperative that current pesticide usage patterns, mainly insecticides and fungicides, are reduced to a minimum," they wrote.

    Potentially hundreds of planes worldwide are flying with unsafe systems cited in an FAA report. 


    (Bloomberg)—U.S. government officials in 2014 revealed an alarming safety issue: Passenger cellphones and other types of radio signals could pose a crash threat to some models of Boeing 737 and 777 airplanes.
    More than 1,300 jets registered in the U.S. were equipped with cockpit screens vulnerable to interference from Wi-Fi, mobile phones and even outside frequencies such as weather radar, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, which gave airlines until November 2019 to replace the units made by Honeywell International Inc.
    Today, potentially hundreds of planes worldwide are still flying with the unsafe systems cited in the FAA report. Flight-critical data including airspeed, altitude and navigation could disappear and “result in loss of airplane control at an altitude insufficient for recovery,” the FAA said in the safety bulletin, known as an airworthiness directive.
    Honeywell hasn’t heard of any blanking display screens caused by cell phones or other radio frequencies while an airplane was in flight, spokeswoman Nina Krauss said. When airlines and Honeywell argued that radio signals were unlikely to cause safety problems during flight, though, the FAA countered that it had run tests on in-service planes -- and the jets flunked.
    Boeing Co. found the interference in a laboratory test in 2012 and hasn’t seen similar issues on other aircraft, a company spokesman said. Honeywell is aware of only one case where all six display units in a 737 cockpit went blank, Krauss said. The cause was a software problem that has been fixed and is currently being flight-tested, she said.
    The affected 737s are the so-called Next Generation model, a predecessor of the Boeing Max, which was involved in two crashes in less than five months. Cockpit displays on the Max were made by Rockwell Collins, now a unit of United Technologies Corp., not Honeywell. Boeing’s 777s also were covered by the FAA order.
    The FAA order didn’t quantify the amount of radio signals needed to cause interference problems. Still, the radio-signal threat extends beyond that specific display system and FAA warning.
    Numerous cell phones left on during any airplane flight “could be a real problem," said professor Tim Wilson, department chair for electrical, computer, software and systems engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The greater the number of phones emitting radio signals, he said, the greater the potential for interference with a plane’s flight system.
    Many airlines now permit passengers to turn their phones to “airplane mode," which allows Wi-Fi transmissions. But mobile phones operate at higher power levels, Wilson said, since the signals must reach a cell tower and not just a local antenna or router. “So cellular service is potentially more impactful," he added.
    The FAA in 2013 began the process of allowing wider use of electronic devices on planes, provided airlines could demonstrate it was safe. That prompted an outcry from consumer groups concerned about passengers being subjected to the cellphone conversations of seatmates.
    No U.S. airlines allowed it and, in 2018, Congress barred the use of cellphones for calls during flights.

    Many are promoting LED lights as “environmentally-friendly” because they supposedly use less energy.  In fact, some environmentalists are really ticked off at the Trump administration because they want to exempt some of these bulbs from “green” standards.
    Unfortunately, just because these LED bulbs supposedly use less energy to operate doesn’t mean they are harmless – biologically or environmentally.  There’s too much research that says they aren’t and warnings from the American Medical Association and other health experts have been covered extensively by the Mainstream Media (see 12) and other credible sources over the years (see 123).  Their surveillance capabilities have been reported as well.

    Smart Homes - Ghosts of the Future

    The smart home is a haunted house

    The door locks itself behind you. The lights turn on and off by themselves. A strange energy animates your house, and an unsettling, almost sentient presence watches you from its walls. Your house might be haunted, or it might be smart. 
    Smart-home technology shares many features in common with the haunted houses of Gothic lore, and these similarities aren’t lost on users. Twitter and Reddit threads are full of experiences with smart tech that wouldn’t feel out of place in a horror movie: Google Home laughs for no reason, Hue lights turn on unprompted, and Alexa users worry that she is talking to ghosts. Meanwhile, TV shows like Black Mirror (“White Christmas”) and movies like Ex Machina make the connection explicit, framing stories about smart technology within the conventions of Gothic horror.

    In these plots, as in much canonical horror, houses are alive and full of secrets. They know things about their inhabitants, harbor intentions toward them, and are capable of exerting insidious control. Different iterations of AI haunt protagonists just like ghosts do, and like ghosts, their omnipresence, and liminality — in between human and inhuman, living and dead — makes them monstrous. The comparison is emotionally apt, and calls attention to a new batch of fears and anxieties we accept as the cost of convenience. But it also gets at a deeper sense of unease: as in ghost stories, the creatures that emerge from our technology are ultimately human or human-made.


    The Gothic as a literary tradition originated in Europe in the late 1700s before coming to the U.S. a century later. You may know it from classics like Frankenstein and Dracula, or through authors like Shirley Jackson or Toni Morrison. The Gothic has always been an oppositional genre: It emerged in concert with transcendentalism, and pushed back against transcendentalist notions of people as fundamentally good and worthy of trust. Gothic protagonists are unable to fully understand or master themselves, much less the world around them. They are haunted by their pasts and the ways in which they have failed, unable to escape the terrible things they have done or that have been done to them.

    In the Gothic, things that have been ignored soon bubble up again, and in the process, places and people that seemed familiar become strange. People gain doppelgangers that reveal their worst qualities, as in The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Curious Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Rooms and homes that once were safe become grotesque as they amplify the histories of their residents, as in Morrison’s Beloved, where 124 is described as “a spiteful house,” full of the venom of a murdered child. Gothic homes are frequently described as simultaneously strangely empty — often abandoned by their residents — and strangely full: of ghosts, of memories, and of an unsettling aliveness.
