Zhang Y, Lai J, Ruan G, Chen C, Wang DW. Meta-analysis of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields and cancer risk: a pooled analysis of epidemiologic studies. Environ Int. 2015 Dec 15;88:36-43. doi: 10.1016/j.envint.2015.12.012. [Epub ahead of print]

Highlights

• A significant association between ELF-EMF exposure and cancer risk was identified.
• Subgroup analysis revealed increased risk only in North America, especially in United States.
• However, the data from individual European country was contradicted with each other.
• Increased risk was only observed in residential exposure or interview-based surveys.
• Device measured studies obtained no significant association in overall effects.

Abstract

Studies have suggested that extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) may affect physiological functions in animal models. However, epidemiologic studies investigating the association of ELF-EMF with the susceptibility to cancer yield contradictory results.

In this comprehensive analysis, we conducted a search for case-control surveys regarding the associations of ELF-EMF and cancer susceptibility in electronic databases. A total of 42 studies involving 13,259 cases and 100,882 controls were retrieved.
Overall, increased susceptibility to cancer was identified in the ELF-EMF exposed population (OR=1.08, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.15, P=0.02). In the stratified analyses, increased risk was found in North America (OR=1.10; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.20, P=0.02), especially the United States (OR=1.10; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.20, P=0.03). However, studies from Europe contradict these results. Moreover, a higher risk was found to be statistically significantly associated with the residential exposed population (OR=1.18; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.37, P=0.03). Furthermore, an increased cancer risk was found in interview-based surveys (OR=1.16; 95% CI: 1.00, 1.35, P=0.04). In device measurement-based studies, a slight increased risk was found only in premenopausal breast cancer (OR=1.23; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.49, P=0.04).

Our meta-analysis suggests that ELF-EMFs are associated with cancer risk, mainly in the United States and in residential exposed populations. Methodological challenges might explain the differences among studies.

Abstract: The ‘informational content’ of Earth's electromagnetic
signaling is like a set of operating instructions
for human life. These environmental cues are dynamic
and involve exquisitely low inputs (intensities) of critical
frequencies with which all life on Earth evolved. Circadian
and other temporal biological rhythms depend on these
fluctuating electromagnetic inputs to direct gene expression,
cell communication and metabolism, neural development,
brainwave activity, neural synchrony, a diversity
of immune functions, sleep and wake cycles, behavior and
cognition. Oscillation is also a universal phenomenon, and
biological systems of the heart, brain and gut are dependent
on the cooperative actions of cells that function according
to principles of non-linear, coupled biological oscillations
for their synchrony. They are dependent on exquisitely
timed cues from the environment at vanishingly small
levels. Altered ‘informational content’ of environmental
cues can swamp natural electromagnetic cues and result
in dysregulation of normal biological rhythms that direct
growth, development, metabolism and repair mechanisms.
Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) and radiofrequency
radiation (RFR) can have the devastating biological effects
of disrupting homeostasis and desynchronizing normal
biological rhythms that maintain health. Non-linear, weak
field biological oscillations govern body electrophysiology,
organize cell and tissue functions and maintain organ
systems. Artificial bioelectrical interference can give false
information (disruptive signaling) sufficient to affect critical
pacemaker cells (of the heart, gut and brain) and desynchronize
functions of these important cells that orchestrate
function and maintain health. Chronic physiological stress
undermines homeostasis whether it is chemically induced
or electromagnetically induced (or both exposures are
simultaneous contributors). This can eventually break
down adaptive biological responses critical to health maintenance;
and resilience can be compromised. Electrohypersensitivity
can be caused by successive assaults on human
bioelectrochemical dynamics from exogenous electromagnetic
fields (EMF) and RFR or a single acute exposure. Once
sensitized, further exposures are widely reported to cause
reactivity to lower and lower intensities of EMF/RFR, at
which point thousand-fold lower levels can cause adverse
health impacts to the electrosensitive person. Electrohypersensitivity
(EHS) can be a precursor to, or linked with,
multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) based on reports of
individuals who first develop one condition, then rapidly
develop the other. Similarity of chemical biomarkers is seen
in both conditions [histamines, markers of oxidative stress,
auto-antibodies, heat shock protein (HSP), melatonin
markers and leakage of the blood-brain barrier]. Low intensity
pulsed microwave activation of voltage-gated calcium
channels (VGCCs) is postulated as a mechanism of action
for non-thermal health effects.

Abstract: Humans and ecosystems are exposed to highly
variable and unknown cocktail of chemicals and radiations.
Although individual chemicals are typically present
at low concentrations, they can interact with each other
resulting in additive or potentially synergistic mixture
effects. This was also observed with products obtained
by radiation actions such as sunlight or electromagnetic
fields that can change the effects of chemicals, such as pesticides,
and metal trace elements on health. Concomitant
presence of various pesticides and their transformation
products adds further complexity to chemical risk assessment
since chronic inflammation is a key step for cancer
promotion. Degradation of a parent molecule can produce
several by-products which can trigger various toxic
effects with different impacts on health and environment.
For instance, the cocktail of sunlight irradiated sulcotrione
pesticide has a greater cytotoxicity and genotoxicity
than parent molecule, sulcotrione, and questions about
the impact of photochemical process on environment.
Adjuvants were shown to modify the biological features of
pesticides. Addition of other elements, metals or biological
products, can differently enhance cell toxicity of pesticides
or electromagnetic radiations suggesting a synergy
in living organisms. Electromagnetic fields spreading,
pesticide by-products and mixtures monitoring become
greater for environmental contamination evaluations.

Cell tower radiation prevents garden cress from germinating

Cell tower radiation prevents garden cress from germinating

Peer-reviewed study replicates Danish student experiment

In 2013, five ninth grade students in Denmark conducted an experiment for a national science fair which found that cress seeds located near two Wi-Fi routers failed to germinate.

Mainstream media in many countries reported on this news story:
"European acclaim for grade 9 experiment." Nyheder, May 17, 2013.

"Can WiFi Signals Stunt Plant Growth? ... A Danish science experiment by a group of 9th-graders has gained worldwide interest and may have us rethinking the proliferation of wireless devices in our homes." ABC News, May 24, 2013.

"Deense leerlingen verbazen wetenschappers met Wifi-experiment." DeWereldMorgen, May 28, 2013.

"Le Wi-Fi mortel pour les graines de cresson? Attendons l'expérience scientifique." Slate, May 31, 2013.

"Wi-fried: do wireless routers really kill plants?" The Guardian, Dec 17, 2013.

The story went viral on the Internet.

More recently, students in a few countries replicated the findings of this study, but pundits dismissed the results.

In a newly published peer-reviewed study, Drs. Cammaerts and Johansson conducted a partial replication of the original Danish student study using cell towers instead of WiFi routers as the source of wireless radiation. They found that cress seeds located 200 meters from two cell towers failed to germinate.

They concluded that "wireless technology may effectively and seriously impact nature and should urgently be used much more cautiously."

Saudi- New study links cell phone tower radiation to diabetes

Saudi- New study links cell phone tower radiation to diabetes

MENAFN - Arab News - 27/12/2015

(MENAFN - Arab News) RIYADH: A renowned professor of King Saud University (KSU) here has warned of radiation danger from cell phone towers saying that the radiation emissions from towers can cause many health hazards because of their dense installations and unscientific proliferation.

In a new study Prof. Sultan Ayoub Meo a professor at KSU's College of Medicine has for the first time proved that the radiation from towers also causes diabetes mellitus.

Sultan whose research findings on radiation from mobile phone base station towers (MPBST) has been published in the 'International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health' a reputable Swiss science journal said that 'this is the first study added in the global science literature about radiation and its link with type 2 diabetes mellitus.'
The study is based on the effects of Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Filed Radiation (RF-EMFR) generated by MPBSTs on hemoglobin.

Sultan's new study has also raised a question mark over the safety of cell phone towers in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East countries. It is interesting to note here that the use of mobile phones has markedly increased among both gender and all age groups in the Kingdom and across the world during the last two decades. He said that 'there are about 7.3 billion mobile subscriptions worldwide and this figure is more than the world's population.' Spelling out the main findings of his study Sultan told Arab News in an exclusive interview that 'radiation generated by mobile phones and their base stations towers ranges between 400 MHz and 3GHz.'

Mobile phone companies Sultan said installed towers in residential and commercial areas including on/near school buildings which has stirred up widespread public concern about the hazards of RF-EMF radiation.

He also said that the radiation emanating from towers causes many other health hazards like headache depression high blood pressure and sleep disorders besides damaging nervous cardio-vascular as well as reproductive systems.

The KSU professor said that about 382 million people globally are suffering from diabetes mellitus and this number is expected to surge to 592 million by 2035 as per the data shared by the International Diabetic Federation. 'In 2014 alone a total of 4.9 million people died due to the complications of diabetes mellitus' said Sultan adding that this deadly disease took the life of one individual every seven seconds.

In this new research study which for the first time discovered the link between cell tower radiation and diabetes; Sultan and his colleagues selected two different elementary schools in Riyadh region.

The team led by Sultan selected 159 apparently healthy students (96 from one school and 63 from another school) of the same age gender nationality regional cultural and socio-economic status.

Blood samples were collected from all the students and the HbA1c was analyzed. The team found that the students who were exposed to high RF-EMF generated by MPBS had significantly higher HbA1c than the students who were exposed to low RF-EMF.

How just ONE mobile phone can make a plane crash, leaked study reveals

How just ONE mobile phone can  make a plane crash, leaked study reveals

Using just one mobile phone or electronic device during a flight can cause a plane’s systems to shut down, a leaked study has found.

A single Blackberry or iPad can cause the auto pilot to disengage and critical warning lights to come on, testers discovered.

The instruments which guide pilots in bad weather can also be affected by the electrical signals from such devices - with potentially catastrophic consequences.

Disruption: A businessman uses his mobile on a plane
Disruption: A businessman uses his mobile on a plane

A confidential study by the the International Air Transport Association, a trade group representing more 230 passenger and cargo airlines worldwide, found that over six years there were 75 separate incidents which caused concern.

A previous probe by the UK Civil Aviation Authority found just 35 safety alerts blamed on phones over the same time scale.

THE IATA EXPERTS CALLED FOR PASSENGERS TO STOP IGNORING WARNINGS ABOUT ELECTRONIC DEVICES BECAUSE THEY COULD CAUSE THE PLANE TO CRASH.

Confidential tests by Boeing have revealed that the worst offender for electronic interference was the iPad, followed by the iPhone and the Blackberry.

In tests just one of each device left on sent out hidden signals which were well above what Boeing considered safe to fly on.

WHY YOU CAN'T USE A MOBILE IN THE AIR

The ban was brought in because safety officials suspected that the radio frequency emitted by cell phones could malfunction a plane's electronic systems.
It was feared that early cellular phones could possibly bleed over into the communications between the plane, other planes and ground communications.
Newer digital phones do not have this problem, but the ban remains, it is assumed, to save the airlines from having to deal with phone conversations and others complaining.
Others claim that the airlines would simply prefer passengers use the telecommunications systems mounted on seat backs in commercial airplanes, because these phones are said to be highly profitable.
ABC News reported that of the 75 incidents, 26 affected the flight controls including the autopilot and landing gear whilst seventeen affected navigation systems.

Some 15 caused problems for communications systems and 13 produced electronic warnings, including some for the engine.

The study also included pilot testimony such as one chilling account which read: ‘At about 4500 ft, the autopilot disengaged by itself and the associated warnings/indications came on.

‘Flight attendants were immediately advised to look out for PAX (passengers) operating electronic devices
‘Attendants reported that there were 4 PAX operated electronic devices (1 handphone and 3 iPods).’

The crew used the public address system to advise the passengers to shut off electronic devices ‘for their safety and the safety of the flight,’ after which the aircraft proceeded ‘without any further incident’.
Dave Carson of Boeing, who has served on a U.S. advisory group that looked into the problem, said phones and electronic gadgets could cause major problems for pilots.

‘It could be you that you were to the right of the runway when in fact, you were to the left of the runway, or just completely wipe out the signal so that you didn't get any indication of where you are coming in,’ he said.
Asked if a phone’s signal really can do that damage, he said: ‘It is when it goes in the right place at the right time.’

Engineers have previously warned that the growing obsession with mobile phones and other gadgets could create a 'perfect storm' of interference with aircraft instruments to cause a crash.

Phone interference was cited as a possible factor in a 2003 crash in New Zealand in which eight people died after the plane flew into the ground short of the runway.

The pilot had been calling home.

In 2007, the navigational equipment of a Boeing 737 in the U.S. failed after take off, only to reactivate after a passenger was told to turn off a sat-nav.
