Dear Friends around the European EHS Community,
At ES-UK we have been contacted by Dr Rebecca Scott, from the University of Cardiff, who is funded to conduct a study into the marginalisation of the EHS community and how those affected may have to live remotely without access to support, medical and dental advice and are often separate from their family and friends. The unfettered roll out of the Digital economy has many downsides and EHS is one of those.

Here is some information on the motivation, funding and the intended journal:
To give you some background on myself, I specialize in the social and cultural aspects of consumer behaviour (consumer behaviour being a sub-discipline of marketing). There is a lot of consumption literature that just looks at the positive sides of technology such as the connectivity it offers and the communities etc. But we don't have any conception of the darker sides of technology and how it is drastically impacts human lives. Hence this is a consumer welfare issue.
As a side note my research interests are orientated around the body - this is an enduring research stream of mine. Other projects I've done, or are currently working on, include organ donation consent, violence in Michelin kitchens and why consumers pay for painful experiences.
The project is funded my my personal research budget. As academics we have a small allocation of money every year to use for research and conferences. The money I have will be used to fund my travel to visit EHS sufferers across the UK. The project is not aligned or funded by an external organization.
Our intention with this research is to publish the findings in a top tier international journal (e.g., Journal of Consumer Research) although there is no guarantee the journal will accept the manuscript due to a very rigorous review process. Our ethnographic approach will enable us to tell the story from the perspective of the consumers that are affected. It is our intention, and has been the case in previous research, to get press coverage on this issue - however I cannot promise this as the media have not been very open to this story in the past.
Happy to answer any further questions!
Regards
Rebecca
