Mobile increases the risk of tumors
A new study shows that cell phone use increases the risk of brain tumors.
But not everyone is convinced .
- If it was true , we would already have seen an increased incidence of brain tumors, says Maria Feychting , professor at Karolinska Institutet.
FACTS
This study shows :
Persons who began the use of wireless phones for more than 25 years ago, today three times increased risk of malignant brain tumor .
The risk also increases the more hours as a wireless telephone used in all over the years .
Total use of wireless phones more than 2,376 hours over the years gives 2.5 times increased risk of malignant brain tumor - which is about 40 minutes of calls per day for 10 years with a cordless phone .
The study shows that 40 minutes of mobile calls per day over 10 years increases the risk of tumors.
- We found that those who use cell phones and cordless phones have an increased risk of malignant brain tumors, says Lennart Hardell , professor of oncology at the University Hospital in Orebro and one of the researchers behind the study.
According to him, the result shows that mobile usage also affect disease prognosis .
- Man dies earlier after having fallen ill , perhaps after six months or one year .
Increases clear after 20 years of use
In the study , he concluded that the risk of cancer increases evident after 20 years of mobile use.
- It takes so long for cancer to develop, so this is something we have in front of us.
Lennart Hardell think the result is alarming and believes that it is more sensitive the younger you are .
- The beginning before 20 years of age are exposed to greater risk. It is very worrying that exposing children to radiation and that we do not have public discussion on this .
" No one knows how it will look in 30 years '
But Maria Feychting , professor at the Karolinska Institute , believes that there is no link between mobile phone use and brain tumors.
- If it had been sued , we had seen an increased incidence of brain tumors in the world today and we do not , she says.
She believes that there may be a risk in the long term but that there is still no study that demonstrates this .
- No one knows how it will look like in 30 years and it can not Hardell study demonstrate , says Maria Feychting .
Council to anxious : use handsfree
She believes that we need not be concerned about the use of mobile phones .
- Concerns itself is not good so if you feel the fear , you can now use the hands , she says.
Lennart Hardell would give very different advice to those who are concerned .
- There is technology that removes all radiation . Use hands and have landlines at home and in the office instead of wireless for example. It's not about banning computers or phones, but there is a caveat to that generation is now expanding , says Lennart Hardell .
