Protesters try to stop mobile tower

Protesters have chained themselves to a telephone pole in an effort to stop 2Degrees from erecting a mobile tower in a small town near Dunedin.
Around 20 Brighton locals are protesting at the site where the mobile company planned to install the 12-metre tall tower today.
Two people have chained themselves to an old telephone pole, preventing work from starting.
Protesters say the site is too close to surrounding houses. They have cited independent research that claims children absorb radiation faster than adults and that telephone towers are unsafe.
2Degrees has been consulting with the Brighton community over the tower for months, and tried to find another location for it after residents objected.
But the chosen site, on Brighton-Scrogg's Hill Road, is the only option, said external communications manager Charlene White, adding that the towers operate well within Ministry of Health guidelines.
The project has consent from Dunedin City Council.
Protesters say the small town will boycott 2Degrees if the tower is installed.
