Adult leukaemia and memory and anxiety problems linked to exposure to magnetic fields

Two Chinese studies have found problems associated with exposure to powerfrequency magnetic fields, in the laboratory or at work and at home.

One team reported on the results of 9 studies looking at occupational or residential exposures to magnetic fields and the risk of developing acute myeloid leukaemia in adults. They found consistent evidence of an increased risk at very low levels of 0.1-0.2 microtesla (μT) and more than 0.2 μT, compared with 0.1μT. These are very low fields and will be found in many workplaces and homes.

In a laboratory study, rats exposed to magnetic fields for 4 weeks showed anxiety-like behaviour and changes in spatial memory.

We know that electromagnetic fields have been shown to interact with other environmental pollutants, so these new findings are quite concerning.
