Conclusions of the Canadian report confirm that EHS research, and its review, are polluted by the bad science

Conclusions of the Canadian report confirm that EHS research, and its review, are polluted by the bad science

Excerpt

Recent publication of the Canadian report on Safety Code 6 (RF-EMF and health) brought again to limelight the problem of electromagnetic hypersensitivity – EHS.

Yet again, scientists and lay audiences were fed with the standard mantra in the Canadian report: “The symptoms are real, but what causes them is a mystery”. The same mantra is propagated by WHO, ICNIRP and numerous expert committees.

I have the feeling that this mantra was introduced to the EMF research area few years ago for the sole purpose to “get the EHS people off our backs”. Designers of this mantra assumed that by showing compassion for the suffering of EHS people they will alleviate tensions that exist between EHS sufferers and decision-makers.

They were mistaken. The mantra did not alleviate tensions and EHS sufferers more and more forcefully demand solution to their problem. Simple admission that their symptoms and suffering are real is not enough. What is needed is both, precautionary approach and a serious research effort to find out what and how causes EHS.

Unfortunately the arena of EHS research is polluted with bad science. Badly designed studies waste money and produce bad conclusions. This status quo is perpetuated and new funding is granted for new badly designed studies. Are scientists gone mad? Don’t they understand what they are doing?

US Department of the Interior warns: communication towers threaten birds

h
In a letter regarding a new nationwide wi-fi deployment (called FirstNet), the US Department of the Interior states the proposal threatens birds, and is not consistent with current information and laws that protect birds.  They called for an environmental review.
Two hundred forty one bird species are at mortality risk from both tower collisions and from exposure to the radiation towers emit.

LEIMBACH, April 6 — No smoking, no perfume, no mobile phone use — the list of rules at a newly opened apartment building on the outskirts of Zurich is long.
For a reason: the structure has been purpose built for people who say exposure to everyday products like perfume, hand lotion or wireless devices make them so sick they cannot function.
“I have been suffering since I was a child. This will really move my life in another direction,” said Christian Schifferle, the 59-year-old head of the Healthy Life and Living Foundation (www.stiftung-glw.com), the prime driver behind the project.
Schifferle and the other residents suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), a chronic condition not broadly recognised by the medical community. Those afflicted, however, believe it is sparked by low-level exposure to chemicals in things such as cigarette smoke, pesticides, scented products and paint fumes.
Twelve of the 15 apartments in the earth-coloured building in a remote part of Leimbach, on the outskirts of Switzerland’s largest city, have already been rented since it opened in December.
Many occupants also suffer from electromagnetic hypersensitivity, in which electrical circuits and radiation from wireless equipment make them equally ill.
“It makes me weak, anxious, I can’t breathe, my lungs hurt, and I get dizzy,” says Schifferle, who suffers from both conditions.
While living in the building will not cure Schifferle or others, it aims to make daily lives more comfortable for people whose conditions have often left them isolated and unable to hold jobs.
‘Only half alive’
Schifferle, who first felt sick from the fumes in his parents’ furniture factory when he was three or four, has lived most of his adult life in a trailer in the pristine Swiss Alps.
It was not until he was 35 and stumbled across an American book on MCS that he realised he was not alone, but it was another decade before he found a doctor who took him seriously.
“All my life it has been like I was only half alive,” he said.
The new building is the first of its kind in Europe, according to officials in Zurich who decided to play a pioneering role in helping people with what they called “a very harmful problem”.
They estimate about 5,000 people in Switzerland alone suffer from MCS.
The city made available the land and provided interest-free loans to help finance the SFr6.1-million (US$6.9-million or RM22.63-million) project.
“We wanted to help these people to have a calm home where they hopefully will be less sick,” said Zurich housing office spokeswoman Lydia Trueb.
With a mask covering his nose and mouth, Schifferle proudly shows off the 0.0 reading on a handheld electricity-measuring instrument with a triangular, green antenna.
“This room is very good, because we have almost no electricity,” he said, nodding around a large common area equipped with a big carbon filter to purify the air.
Anyone entering the building is expected to switch off their mobile phones, which in any case do not function inside. But there are landlines for telephone and Internet communication in the building.
Near the entrance, the only cleaning and personal hygiene products residents are allowed to use in the building are on prominent display.
Only isolation helps
“Avoiding the environmental burdens is really the only thing that helps most of these patients,” said John van Limburg Stirum, an internist specialised in environmental medicine who has treated Schifferle and other MCS patients at the Seegarten Klinik near Zurich.
“They have to find shelter somewhere where there are no antennas, no radiation from cell phones, which is getting more and more difficult,” said Stirum.
The condition is difficult to pin down, and sufferers are often dismissed as hypochondriacs.
But a growing body of research suggests an initial chemical exposure can spark an “allergic reaction” in some people when they later confront even very low levels of a range of chemicals.
“These patients are really suffering,” said Stirum, who is urging medical recognition of the condition.
The Zurich building was constructed with special materials, by purpose-trained builders banned from smoking or using scented products like cologne as they worked. It has a ventilation system aimed at sucking out all odours.
“I think a good example for the whole thing is the plaster on the wall,” said architect Andreas Zimmermann, who designed it.
“It doesn’t smell, and that is very important for these people,” he added, saying he searched for months for a completely odourless plaster.
The floor plan is layered like an onion “so that the deeper you enter the apartment, the cleaner the rooms get,” he said.
The building’s most “contaminated” parts are the common areas, main hallway, stairwell and elevator in the centre.
From there, residents enter their apartments, moving through a hallway where they can remove “polluted” clothing, the bathroom and kitchen or other technically equipped rooms, before getting to the “cleanest” rooms: the living room and bedroom.
A special “net” has also been built into the facade and roof to protect inhabitants from electromagnetic or electrostatic waves or fields, Zimmermann said.
Despite all the efforts, Schifferle still only spends a few days a week in his new apartment. More ventilation is needed, he said, until all traces and scents of the builders are gone. — AFP

Bees can sense the electric fields generated by flowers
Previous Picture of the Day articles discuss aspects of biology that rely on electricity. Whether it is the transportation of nutrients and electrolytic compound in and out of cells, or the motive action of bacterial flagella, electric charge exchange is a necessary component for life to exist.
Last year, scientists from the University of Bristol’s School of Biological Sciences announced an important discovery: bees, specifically bumble bees, carry a positive electric charge that they use to sense negative electric fields surrounding flowers. According to Professor Daniel Robert: “The co-evolution between flowers and bees has a long and beneficial history, so perhaps it’s not entirely surprising that we are still discovering today how remarkably sophisticated their communication is.”
Since plants are anchored in the ground, they acquire negative charge—they are “grounded”. Bumble bees, on the other hand, beat their wings about 200 times per second, on average, causing a positive charge to build-up on their bodies. This happens because friction with air molecules reduces their negative charge, in the same way that walking across a nylon carpet reduces the negative charge on a human body, resulting in a spark when a grounded metal object is touched. Sparks are not generated between bees and flowers, but the researchers think that fine hairs on a bumble bee’s body “stand up” when it approaches the electric field of a flower.
Somehow, the electrostatic force between bee and flower improves a bee’s memory. It is better able to distinguish over time those flowers that will provide it with the greatest payoff. When the electric fields are reduced in flowers, bumble bees are not as good at determining which flowers to visit.
Bumble bees use many senses to detect flowers that are ripe with pollen and nectar. They are sensitive to ultraviolet light, which is emitted most strongly when a flower is ready for pollination. They can also sense a flower’s fragrance. However, those signals are the primary attractors. What tells a bee that a particular flower will continue to provide nectar? How does it know if other bees have depleted the supply?
Robert and his colleagues discovered that when a bumble bee lands on a flower, there is a mutual charge exchange. A flower’s electric field is reduced by a small amount with each contact. The weaker the electric field, the more bees have landed, so an individual bee might be sensing the difference in potential, thereby knowing how many bees have visited a particular flower. A reduced electric field means that the reward will not be as great, so it does not waste energy trying to feed on flowers with less nectar.
Since flowers are not good electrical conductors, charges accumulate slowly in their structures, possibly in accordance with the replenishment of their nectar supplies. Therefore, a bee “sees” the recharge process, and understands when it is time to revisit a flower.
Perhaps electric charge exchange is going on between plants and other animals, as well—even human beings. It is becoming more obvious to nutritionists that a largely plant-based diet is far healthier for human consumption than meat, dairy and grains. It could be that eating the negatively charged plants helps to reduce the overall positive charge that human beings accumulate because of exposure to air pollution, or positive electric fields from computers and other electronic equipment.
One of the presentations at the Electric Universe conference in 2013 was by Dr. James Oschman. In it, he advised that human beings ought to be more connected to the ground because Earth is connected to the ionosphere. Lightning strikes distribute negative charge into the ground, and walking barefoot helps reduce the positive charge in the body. Eating negatively charged green plants might also be beneficial in the same way. Wheat gluten, on the other hand, is positively charged, so may not be as advantageous to human nutrition.
The Electric Universe is omnipresent. From deep space to atomic interactions, everything is electrical in nature. Galaxies transact with their neighbors along Birkeland current filaments that could be billions of light-years long. The cells in our bodies carry electric charges more powerful than a lightning stroke. It is not surprising that new discoveries reveal new ways that electricity governs the world.

The Wireless Holocaust

The Wireless Holocaust

An Open Letter to Rhode Island Parents re Wi-Fi in Schools

"Please, spare us the excuse that Wi-Fi is everywhere, or that there is a federal initiative pushing Wi-Fi in schools as part of Common Core, or that other schools are installing it, or that you can't afford to turn down the grant money. Do you push someone in front of a moving train because an authority figure tells you to, or because they promise you large sums of cash? Or because everyone else is doing it? Really? When the person you shoved in front of the train gets killed, what is your excuse? NEWS FLASH: There are no excuses; you will have committed a crime.

"It's not a secret anymore. Whether it be from cell towers, cell phones, "smart" wireless utility meters, or Wi-Fi, the evidence is stacking up that there is a slow motion holocaust in progress. And one might argue that school and state officials who permit the use of Wi-Fi in schools despite overwhelming evidence of harm are complicit in this possible crime against humanity. History will be the judge of that--and so, perhaps, will a jury of their peers.

"It is time to be outraged about the paradigm of illness and death that has been created for us by corporate entities, one where cancer, brain tumors, and debilitating health problems are the new "normal." This is NOT the paradigm I choose for myself and my children-- is this the world you want to live in? Is this the legacy you wish to leave for your children?

"For those seeking the truth about the dangers of Wi-Fi in schools and wireless technology in general--and who want to do something about it--please attend our free public meeting on the third Thursday of each month, starting April 17 at 6:30 pm at Food for Thought, 577 Kingstown Road in Wakefield, RI. . . .

Cell Phones Linked To Erectile Dysfunction In New Study

Cell Phones Linked To Erectile Dysfunction In New Study

Though it is unwelcome news for everyone across the world, but it is true mobile phones is linked to erectile dysfunction (ED). In a new study researchers are saying so. However, a large-scale investigation is yet to be done to this before the male population starts throwing the cell phones out of window.
Medical teams in Egypt and Australia have found a correlation between ED and carrying a mobile phone. The report is published in the Central European Journal of Urology.Men
A group of twenty men were involved in the study who complained about the problem in last six months. A group of 10 men, other than this, were also involved who had no such ED complains and were healthy.
Regarding the age, height, weight, total testosterone, smoking or exposure to other known sources of radiation there were no significant difference between the two groups.
All the subjects in both the groups were asked to complete the Sexual Health Inventory for Men (SHIM) for evaluation of the International Inex of Erectile Function (IIEF) and a questionnaire designed to assess their cell phone usage.
The researchers found those men who suffered from ED carried their cell phones in switched-on condition for about 4.4 hours every day and those who had no such problem carried only about 1.8 hours with them.
Earlier too similar findings were made and cell phones were linked to increased risk of cancer like brain tumors. In 2011 cell phones were rated as “group 2B” in the gold-standard rating system by International Agency for Research on Cancer citing cancer risk to humans. However, till now no conclusive link has been found between the two.
