  • Mast must go: The Du mobile tower just outside the Al Raha International School campus in Al Raha, Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi: Parents of two private schools in Abu Dhabi are demanding the removal of mobile towers located close to the school campuses.
Angry parents of Brighton College Abu Dhabi and Al Raha International School told XPRESS that etisalat and du have failed to respond favourably to their concerns.
More than 430 parents have submitted a petition to etisalat and the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) to remove a tower which was installed next to the Brighton campus in May by etisalat.
Parents complained that the mast located just five metres from the pre-prep section exposed children as young as three and seven to radiation. “Parents spent so much time collecting signatures to pursue authorities to consider precautionary norms and relocate the mast. But we’ve seen no result,” said a frustrated parent who requested anonymity.
Similarly, the management and parents of Al Raha International School, run by Taaleem, have been pushing du to get a mobile tower removed since last year, but to no avail.
Parents of Al Raha are running an online campaign on Change.org urging authorities to remove the du tower.
“It is still a matter of contention with du. The school is continuing the fight to hopefully get it removed to a safer distance from the school,” Clive Pierrepont, Director of Communications and Marketing at Taaleem, told XPRESS.
Last year, parents met du officials to express their concerns after the ground work for installing the tower began. Both parents and school authorities maintain the school was not consulted before du decided to install the tower.
“The telecommunication authority requires service providers to follow best endeavours and use precautionary norms while installing mobile masts close to schools and hospitals. In this case, they are putting the health of 1,200 children at risk,” said K. Martin, a parent of Al Raha.
However, du maintains that the mast is fully compliant with both TRA regulations and international safety standards.
Similarly, in the case of Brighton School, run by Bloom Management, etisalat maintains parents were informed that all TRA and international regulations on radiation limits were followed.
In an e-mail response to the parents’ petition – a copy of which XPRESS has seen – a top TRA official said the school management was consulted before installing the tower. “The TRA understands that etisalat originally suggested another position for the tower. Etisalat’s first choice was to use a different location. That location was not available and Bloom provided the current location as the only one available,” the e-mail said.
M.F., a parent of Brighton, said: “The school never mentioned it to us and we feel cheated. We were campaigning against the tower under the impression that the school was not party to this decision.”
Brighton was not immediately available for a comment.

Wheeler Assigns Report On Possible FCC Reforms

Calls FCC a 'pro competition agency;' says change in technology does not change rights and responsibilities of networks

By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 11/5/2013 4:16:55 PM

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has hit the ground running, telling staffers he has put special council Diane Cornell in charge of a "temporary" — emphasis Wheeler's — working group to review proposals by commissioners, staffers, Congress and others to reform FCC regulatory processes. He says he wants a report on his desk before the end of the year.

He says he will also "crowdsource" staffers for more input on regulations that are past their prime and procedures that need improving. Wheeler suggested he would be doing some managing by walking around saying "the action is out here, not within the walls of the Chairman's office."

The new chairman addressed staffers in the Commission meeting room Nov. 5, thanking acting chair Mignon Clyburn for her leadership, introducing his new team, and offering his vision for the agency, according to an FCC official. He also blogged about his FCC, which included signaling the reg review.

His vision centered on economic growth, the value of networks (that would be broadband networks) and the importance of security and public safety.

In a blog post, Wheeler expanded on that vision. [He also dropped the tidbit that he and Republican commissioner Michael O'Rielly were in the same D.C. jury pool while both awaited confirmation].

"These are important days in determining the future of our networks and their effect on our commerce and our culture," said Wheeler. "As a history buff, I love John Gardner's observation, 'History doesn't look like history when you're living it.'"

Wheeler said that his FCC would stand for maintaining the "historic compact between networks and users" which appeared to be a signal that the IP transition would not be a reg-free zone. "A change in technology may occasion a review of the rules, but it does not change the rights of users or the responsibilities of networks."

Wheeler focused on broadband in his blog.

"I believe we are the 'Optimism Agency' of the Federal government," he said. "The connective technology that will define the 21st century flows through the FCC. In so many ways our new networks are integral to challenges as diverse as education, energy, and health care. The 21st century economy begins here."

More from the Wheeler blog is excerpted below:

"There is no doubt that today we are living history in the midst of the fourth great network revolution.  Gutenberg's printing press enabled the original information revolution; the railroad was the first high-speed network; and the instantaneous electronic transmissions of the telegraph opened the door to everything from broadcasting to the telephone. Each of these network revolutions redefined mankind's path forward.

"What makes our revolution different from its predecessors, however, is the speed with which it has developed and the velocity with which it continues to evolve. When the President nominated me I was working on a book about the great network revolutions of history. I know from those histories that network revolutions are not easy, that they produce upheaval, dislocation, fear and concern. Yet at the same time, the new networks became the underpinning of everything from the Reformation to the Industrial Revolution.  It is amidst just that sort of upheaval that we have the responsibility of assuring that innovation and technology advance — indeed, advance with speed — while at the same time preserving the basic covenant between networks and those whom they connect.

"All of the new networks of history created upheaval as incumbents struggled to adapt while maintaining their position, insurgents fought for their rightful place, and the people had to adapt to a changing world. It is an historical reality that network change produces tempers that boil, voices that rise, and cries of alarm.

"I have just hung in my office an 1839 poster from Philadelphia in which those who were against the interconnection of two rail lines warned, "Mothers Look Out for Your Children," and "Philadelphians your rights are being invaded." All of this, the poster proclaimed, was in "Violation of the Law." I hung the poster as a reminder that the challenges and the passions with which we deal are neither unique nor new.

"Yet it is precisely in the midst of such change that our job as representatives of the people makes the work of this agency even more important. The challenge America faces, and that this agency faces, is to secure the future through the actions of the present — by encouraging investment and innovation; preserving competitive opportunities; protecting consumers; and assuring the opportunities of the new network extend to all.

"We'll have more to say about the role of the FCC in the changing communications landscape in the coming weeks and months, I'm sure. Suffice it to say, that as networks change, those charged with the responsibility of overseeing those networks must also evolve. Congress instructed us to act in the "public interest, convenience and necessity." I look forward to working with the Congress and to carrying out those instructions.

"During my confirmation hearing I described myself as 'an unabashed supporter of competition because competitive markets produce better outcomes than regulated or uncompetitive markets.' Yet we all know that competition does not always flourish by itself; it must be supported and protected if its benefits are to be enjoyed. This agency is a pro-competition agency."

Falling Stars: Starfish Dying From “Disintegrating” Disease

Falling Stars: Starfish Dying From “Disintegrating” Disease

Populations have been decimated in recent months, and scientists are racing to find out why

Disintegrating Starfish
Nate Fletcher / Pacific Rocky Intertidal Monitoring Lab, University of California at Santa Cruz
A sea star affected by "wasting syndrome," photographed by researchers on the West Coast, has lost two arms and part of a third.
When marine researchers from the University of California at Santa Cruz traveled to Alaska this summer, they noticed something unsettling in the waters near Sitka: populations of starfish were losing their arms. Then other reports started pouring in to their laboratory: from Southern California to British Columbia, uncounted numbers of one of America’s best known sea species appeared to be disintegrating.
It’s normal for a tiny portion of starfish populations to suffer from so-called “wasting syndrome.” If the creatures’ skin is wounded or becomes too dry, little lesions can become infected and lead to the loss of arms. But the disease is typically isolated to one or two starfish among hundreds in a rocky tide pool. And even in bad cases, it rarely stretches beyond a single population. “The spatial extent is unprecedented,” says Pete Raimondi, chair of the ecology and evolutionary biology department at UC Santa Cruz, which monitors starfish populations on the West Coast. “If it’s as extensive as it looks like it is, then we’re talking about a loss of millions and millions.”
While starfish—which scientists call sea stars to avoid the misconception that they are actually fish—often recover from the lesions, infections on the West Coast are proving lethal. Populations of starfish monitored by Raimondi have essentially disappeared over a period of months. “They will start losing arms or bits of arms and in the end, they kind of disintegrate … into a gooey mess,” he says. An individual sea star may go from whole to remains in a period of days. Though starfish generally have the ability to grow new arms, in these cases wounds don’t heal and innards become exposed as the animal falls apart.
So what gives? It could be environmental factors, a virus, bacteria or some combination. Wasting syndrome actually describes a whole set of symptoms without a universal cause. When other outbreaks struck the West Coast in recent decades, scientists identified warm water as the likely culprit. Starfish are primarily cooler water species, so when the water heats up, it compromises their health, making them more susceptible to infected wounds, Raimondi says. Bacteria also divide faster in warmer temperatures, meaning disease can spread more quickly. But the West Coast has been in a cold-water period. “Right now, we don’t really have a culprit,” Raimondi says.
Scientists on the East Coast have observed similarly mysterious starfish deaths in recent years. Researchers at universities like Cornell and Brown are working to figure out why. The state of California recently dedicated $50,000 to starfish experts at their state universities, who are sending a specialized team to sweep the coast for evidence of wasting in coming months. UC Santa Cruz is also running a website on which ordinary beach-goers can learn how to report sightings. It may yet turn out that the disease isn’t as widespread as reports suggest; concerns now are based on a small sample of the starfish living along the Western seaboard.
So far, the species that seems to be taking the biggest hit is pisaster ochraceus, a starfish that can be reddish, orange or purple and up to 18-in. (46 cm) from arm to arm. It’s also one of the most common species in Pacific tide pools. Researchers in Washington are investigating reports that another species, a 24-armed giant known as the sunflower starfish, is falling prey to the disease. Raimondi says about 10 other species have shown symptoms.
Identifying the root cause of the problem isn’t going to be quick or easy. And discovering what’s happening on one coast doesn’t necessarily explain what’s happening on the other. Ben Miner, a biology professor at Western Washington University, says he expects to have a clearer picture in a couple months. He cautions that if this does turn out to be a worst case scenario, other animals will feel the impact, as the lack of starfish ripples through the ecosystem. “We just started looking,” Miner says. ”If this is affecting sea stars up and down the coast, we’ve never seen anything like that before.”

"The Obama Administration is promoting wireless internet access in schools. The intent is for each child during the school day to do school work on an iPad and/or laptop with WiFi.  What they are not telling the parents is that the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer has determined that pulsed radio frequency radiation, i.e., the radiation being emitted from wireless technology is possibly cancer causing.  The radiation was given a class 2B rating.  The same classification they have given to DDT, lead, exhaust fumes and chloroform.  No government, nor parents, should allow these toxins to be in the classrooms ..." Your Brain on a Cellphone (Sep. 23, 2013 - Berkeley, California): The first study on the short-term effects of Long Term Evolution (LTE), the fourth generation cell phone technology, has been published online in the peer-reviewed journal, Clinical Neurophysiology.
The resting state brain activity of each participant was measured by magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at two times -- after exposure to LTE microwave radiation, and after a sham exposure. The results demonstrated that LTE exposure affected brain neural activity not only in the closer brain region but also in the remote region, including the left hemisphere of the brain. The study helps explain the underlying neural mechanism for the remote effects of microwave radiation in the brain. Read more byclicking here.
Dr. Hugh Taylor talks about the Yale study showing ADHD-like behaviors in mice exposed to simple cell phone exposure (not smart phone, which emits more radiation, he says), on June 28, 2013 at the La Grua Center in Stonington, CT. By the time they’re 19 or 20 years old, our children will have used a cell phone for 10 years, and we have no idea what type of risk that’s carrying. Now we live an ocean of electromagnetic radiation.
It’s all around us now, invisible, but we know it’s there. Every time you lift up your mobile phone you know it’s there. It is very hard to turn the clock back, in fact it is impossible, but we need to be aware of the adverse health effects so that we can have the choice of taking precautions against the exposures.
How we could have possibly thought that putting microwaves to our brain was safe? We just don’t fully understand what we’re doing. The full length 90-minute documentary, Resonance - Beings of Frequency, can be watched by clicking the video frame here below.
