Abstract

This is a replication of a study that we previously conducted in Colorado with 25 subjects designed to test the effect of electromagnetic radiation generated by the base station of a cordless phone on heart rate variability (HRV). In this study, we analyzed the response of 69 subjects between the ages of 26 and 80 in both Canada and the USA. Subjects were exposed to radiation for 3-min intervals generated by a 2.4-GHz cordless phone base station (3-8 μW/cm(2)). A few participants had a severe reaction to the radiation with an increase in heart rate and altered HRV indicative of an alarm response to stress. Based on the HRV analyses of the 69 subjects, 7% were classified as being "moderately to very" sensitive, 29% were "little to moderately" sensitive, 30% were "not to little" sensitive and 6% were "unknown". These results are not psychosomatic and are not due to electromagnetic interference. Twenty-five percent of the subjects' self-proclaimed sensitivity corresponded to that based on the HRV analysis, while 32% overestimated their sensitivity and 42% did not know whether or not they were electrically sensitive. Of the 39 participants who claimed to experience some electrical hypersensitivity, 36% claimed they also reacted to a cordless phone and experienced heart symptoms and, of these, 64% were classified as having some degree of electrohypersensitivity (EHS) based on their HRV response. Novel findings include documentation of a delayed response to radiation. Orthostatic HRV testing combined with provocation testing may provide a diagnostic tool for some sufferers of EHS when they are exposed to electromagnetic emitting devices. The protocol used underestimates reaction to electromagnetic radiation for those who have a delayed autonomic nervous system reaction and it may under diagnose those who have adrenal exhaustion as their ability to mount a response to a stressor is diminished.

In what can only be described as extreme paranoia or as an extreme health risk, a Swedish town had a bit of a health scare upon the activation of a WiMAX base-station a few weeks ago. According to Sweden's SVT, which reported on the incident, the local hospital emergency room was flooded with calls regarding various symptoms such as headaches, difficulty breathing, blurry vision and even two cases of heart arrhythmia. All of this was mere hours after the base station was activated, and the symptoms went away once the station was deactivated, or if the sufferer moved away from that radio tower of death. Apparently Sweden was the first country to recognise electromagnetic hypersensitivity as a valid medical condition, and there are already talks of getting the government to shut down the nation's WiMAX networks while the claims are investigated. The UN recognises EHS as a "real and sometimes disabling condition," and say that around 3% of the world's population is effected by high frequency magnetic radiation in such ways. We'll wait for a few more studies to come through and completely conflict with each other so we can go on with our happily ignorant mobile lifestyles.

FCC IS RECONSIDERING ITS RADIATION EXPOSURE LIMITS

The Federal Communications Commission is requesting comments on “whether its limits should be more restrictive, less restrictive, or remain the same.”
 
WE NEED TO SEND PERSONAL STORIES—AS MANY AS POSSIBLE.
 
If you have something you want to tell the FCC about what has happened to you, now is the time to do so.  If you have been injured, tell the FCC your story.  If you have doctors’ reports, send them to the FCC now.  Say “I HAVE BEEN INJURED BY RF RADIATION THAT COMPLIES WITH CURRENT EXPOSURE LIMITS.”  If you have been driven out of your home, or your city, say so.  If you can no longer work at your job because of wireless technology, say so.  If you can no longer go out in public, travel, go to City Hall, visit a hospital, say so.  These comments all go onto the FCC’s website for the public, members of Congress, and everyone else to read.  If we all send our stories in, they will comprise a document unlike any other in the world.

The Notice of Inquiry makes clear that the FCC does not think there is any reason to lower its exposure limits.  But every comment sent becomes part of the public record, and if ten thousand injured people send comments, we cannot easily be ignored. 
 
Some of us were involved in 1996 when the FCC adopted its current exposure limits.  We all made the mistake of believing that the scientific studies we sent would be read and acted upon.  The FCC ignored 15,000 pages of science.  We have even more science now, but in addition we have 17 years of exposure to radiation behind us. Hundreds of thousands of people have been severely injured by radiation that complies with current limits.  The last time, only about 100 people in the U.S. sent comments on the proposed exposure limits.  This time, we need ten thousand, and we need personal stories.  Lots of them.

Campaigners have been granted a temporary reprieve
Campaigners hoping to stop the Church of England installing phone masts in the steeple of an historic church in Kilburn have been granted a temporary reprieve.
The vicar of the Grade-I listed St Augustine’s Church, in Kilburn Park Road, has been vying to have nine mobile phone antennae installed for operators Vodaphone and O2 for a sum said to be under £15,000.
Despite pleas and opposition from neighbours concerned at the proliferation of masts, and the effect on the church building, which would have its original louvres replaced with fibreglass ones, the Church of England gave the go-ahead last month.
But the whole endeavour has ground to a halt because the network operators have frozen works on new sites, according to New Edge Telecommunications (NET), the Church’s contractor for mobile phone mast installations.
Peter Morrell-Brown, NET’s managing director, said: “All the sites went on hold when Vodafone and O2 approached Ofcom for a ‘ranshare’ agreement. That is essentially where operators can share equipment and antennae. They need to find a way to provide the level of capacity people want while still generating profit. They have now got the agreement but Vodafone and O2 are concentrating on upgrading their existing sites. So all these proposed sites are on hold. When they come off hold, we will take it from there.”
He added: “Data usage is going up at an enormous rate. The only way to keep up with that is to put up more sites with antennae on.”
A petition of more than 360 signatures was gathered against the plans, and Westminster Council even warned the Diocese of London it may pursue an injunction if unauthorised works began.
