An Explanation for Early Dementia Increase - Blood Brain Barrier Damage

Out of 21 countries, the US is now ranked #2 highest in neurological disease death in 2010 when 20 years prior it used to rank #11 for the age>75 group and #17 for the age 55-74 group.  In the age>75 group, the US had the highest rate of increase at 412%, and in the age 55-74 group, US had the second highest rate of increase at 64%.  This is serious - see the email attached below for plots of data and the newspaper article that appeared in the Washington Post. This was data from 6 years ago, and it's likely to be worse now.   Huge increases like these do not happen without reason.  Give this some thought, and please read the short paragraphs that follow.

An explanation for the increase in dementia can be found from a paper published in March 2012 by Dr. Andrew Goldsworthy, former advisor to the European Space Agency and retired lecturer in biology from Imperial College, one of the top 3 universities in the UK, entitled The Biological Effects of Weak Electromagnetic Fields, Problems and Solutions.  He spent many years studying calcium metabolism in living cells and how cells, tissues, and organisms are affected by electromagnetic fields.  The pulsed frequencies in the range 6-600Hz causes the most damage to cell membranes (calcium ions which are the glue that holds cell membranes together are vibrated loose from the membranes in this frequency range, particularly around 16 Hz, tearing them). This also happens to be the frequency range used by the pulsed signals in all digital cellular communications.  "The Industry clearly did not do its homework before letting these technologies loose on the general public and this omission may already have cost many lives."  He also predicted that early onset dementia may be on the rise because of our increased exposure to wireless radiation.  It is an excellent paper and covers all effects of wireless radiation caused by cell membrane damage, including rashes, allergies and asthma, autoimmune disease, headaches and other neurological effects, anxiety, cardiovascular effects, autism, and reproductive effects. It had been known since the work of Bawin et al. (1975) that weak electromagnetic fields could remove calcium ions from the surfaces of brain cells...by removing structurally-important calcium ions from cell membranes, which then made them leak. We now know that membrane leakage of this kind can explain most of the biological effects of both conditioned water and of direct exposure to electromagnetic fields.

Normal brain function depends on the orderly transmission of signals through a mass of about 100 billion neurons.Neurons are typically highly branched nerve cells. They usually have one long branch (the axon), which carries electrical signals as action potentials (nerve impulses) to or from other parts of the body or between relatively distant parts of the brain (a nerve contains many axons bundled together). The shorter branches communicate with other neurons where their ends are adjacent at synapses. They transmit information across the synapses using a range of neurotransmitters, which are chemicals secreted by one neuron and detected by the other.

Calcium ions play an essential role in brain function because a small amount of calcium must enter the cytosol of the neuron before it can release its neurotransmitters (Alberts et al. 2002).   Electromagnetically-induced membrane leakage would increase the background level of calcium in the neurons so that they release their neurotransmitters sooner. This improves our reaction time to simple stimuli but it can also trigger the spontaneous release of neurotransmitters to send spurious signals that have no right to be there, which makes the brain hyperactive and less able to concentrate

p. 14 Effect on Tight Junction Barriers


Tight junction barriers are layers of cells where the gaps between them are sealed by tight-junctions to prevent materials leaking around their sides. They protect all of our body surfaces from the entry of unwanted materials and often protect one part of the body from being unduly influenced by the others. For example, the blood-brain barrier prevents toxins entering the brain from the bloodstream. Normally, these barriers are closed but they are programmed to open if calcium ions enter their cells. This was demonstrated by Kan and Coleman (1988) who showed that the calcium ionophore A23187 (an antibiotic that kills bacteria and fungi by letting calcium ions leak into their cells) opened tight junction barriers in the liver. The electromagnetic opening of the blood-liver barrier could be a contributory factor to the current outbreak of liver disease in the UK among the under forties (the cell phone generation), which is at present being blamed on alcohol abuse.  Since all tight junction barriers have basically the same design, unscheduled calcium entry resulting from electromagnetic exposure is likely to open all of them in much the same way. The opening of our tight junction barriers by electromagnetic fields can account for many modern illnesses, ranging from asthma to multiple allergies and Alzheimer’s disease.

The blood-brain barrier normally prevents possibly toxic large molecules from the bloodstream entering the brain. The radiation from cell phones, even at one hundredth of the permitted SAR value, can open the blood brain barrier in rats so that protein molecules as large as albumin could enter their brains (Persson et al. 1997). Later experiments by Salford et al. (2003) showed that this was associated with the death of neurons. We would not expect an immediate effect because the brain has spare capacity, but prolonged or repeated exposure to cell phone or similar radiation would be expected to cause a progressive loss of functional neurons and result in early dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in humans. The extreme sensitivity of the blood-brain barrier to the radiation could mean that even sitting close to someone using a cell phone could affect you too. It may not be too surprising to find that early onset Alzheimer’s disease is now on the increase in modern society.

Last week I sent out a link to a Washington Post article https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/people-are-developing-dementia-earlier-and-dying-of-it-more-a-study-shows/2015/08/06/599b16b8-3c0a-11e5-8e98-115a3cf7d7ae_story.html?wprss=rss_world that was published in August 2015 about a 21-country study that found people are developing dementia a decade earlier compared to 20 years ago (2010 vs. 1990) The disease is now being regularly diagnosed in people in their late 40s and death rates from early onset dementia are soaring.  The study found that deaths caused by neurological disease had risen significantly in adults aged 55 to 74 in many countries and more than doubled in the over-75 population overall.  The problem was particularly acute in the United States, where neurological deaths in men aged over 75 have nearly tripled and in women increased more than fivefold.  The rate of increase in such a short time suggested a silent or even a hidden epidemic, in which environmental factors must play a major part, not just aging.”  The environmental factors cited included chemical pollution and increased background electromagnetic fields (which includes wireless radiation).  In the US the Telecommunications Act was passed in 1996, and cell towers have increased several fold since then (Cell Towers in 1998: 66,000.   2013: 300,000.  http://www.ctia.org/your-wireless-life/how-wireless-works/annual-wireless-industry-survey ) .  Dr. Gerd Oberhard, Public Health Dept. of Salzburg, Austria, specifically warned about the effects of RF radiation including neurodegenerative diseases years ago, here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tChkIBpj... 


I plotted the data by country and combined the male and female data.  The resulting graphs are very concerning.  Finland and USA have the highest neurological deaths in all age groups.  USA used to be ranked #17 for neurological deaths in the age 55-74 group and #11 for the age >75 group from 1989-1991, but 20 years later in 2010 USA is now ranked #2 in both age groups. Compared to 20 years ago,neurological deaths have increased significantly in the age>75 group, in ALL countries, ranging from 22% (Greece) to highest at 412% (USA).  In the age 55-74 group, US had the second highest increase of neurological deaths at 64%, meaning neurological diseases are starting earlier.  11 other countries (Finland, Greece, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, Germany, Australia, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, Japan) also showed increases.  But not all countries showed increases in early-onset neurological diseases.  6 countries actually showed declines- UK, Belgium, Austria, Netherlands, Ireland, France.  See charts below.

For death rates from neurological diseases to increase this much over a 20 year period and for it to start a decade earlier is very serious and warrants investigation by government and health agencies.  Something in the environment is the cause.  Also note that this data is based on comparison from six years ago in 2010 to 20 years before that.  The situation is probably worse now.

Over industry objections, a federal judge has allowed Berkeley to start requiring cell phone retailers to tell customers that carrying switched-on phones too close to their bodies might expose them to radiation levels higher than recommended by federal guidelines.
The city’s ordinance had been scheduled to take effect last June, but was blocked by court order after CTIA-The Wireless Association sued, claiming the law violated freedom of speech. In September, U.S. District Judge Edward Chen of San Francisco issued an injunction against the entire ordinance because it contained a disputed warning that “this potential risk is greater for children.”
The City Council then removed that warning, and on Wednesday Chen allowed the rest of the ordinance to take effect, rejecting the industry group’s request for a stay while it asks a federal appeals court to declare the entire ordinance unconstitutional.
The measure requires retailers to notify customers that the federal government sets radiation standards for cell phones, and that a user may be exposed to levels that exceed those standards by carrying a phone in a pocket or tucked into a bra when the device is connected to a wireless network.
Chen ruled in September, and reiterated Wednesday, that Berkeley had based that warning on the Federal Communications Commission’s research and guidelines. By contrast, he said, the now-discarded warning about a potentially greater risk for children was not based on scientific consensus or federal guidelines, but was a matter of scientific debate that retailers could not be required to pass on to customers.
In arguing that the overall ordinance was unconstitutional and seeking a stay, CTIA cited a 1985 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that said government agencies could require product-sellers to pass along government messages only if the statements are “factual and uncontroversial.” The industry group contended Berkeley’s message was overstated and misleading, since the FCC, by its own admission, built in a considerable safety margin when it set guidelines for carrying cell phones.
But Chen said the city had referred accurately to the FCC guidelines and would not interfere with legitimate free-speech rights by requiring the standards to be communicated to customers.
Although the federal agency established standards that may have been stricter than necessary, “it did set specific limits and did so in order to assure safety,” Chen said.
CTIA’s disagreement is not enough to make the city’s message “controversial,” the judge said, noting that “science is almost always debatable at some level.” He also said the industry group and its members are free to criticize the message, as long as they comply with the requirement to pass it along to customers.
CTIA criticized the ruling and said it would ask the Ninth U.S.Circuit Court of Appeals to halt enforcement of the ordinance while the industry group appeals.
“The overwhelming scientific evidence refutes Berkeley’s ill-informed and misleading mandatory warnings about cell phones,“ CTIA said in a statement.

Men using a cellular phone for more than one hour a day double the risk of their sperm count dropping to levels too low for procreation, according researchers from the Haifa Technion and the Carmel Medical Center.
A new study conducted at the two institutions, and published Tuesday in the medical journal Reproductive BioMedicine Online, brings evidence to support a long-feared link between dropping fertility rates in men and the prevalent use of cellular phones.The quality of sperm among men in Western countries is constantly decreasing and is considered crucial in 40 percent of the cases in which couples have difficulty conceiving a child.
The researchers, led by Dr. Ariel Zilberlicht of the Carmel Medical Center, investigated the link between characteristics of cellphone usage and semen quality by studying the phone habits of men referred for semen analysis.
According to the findings, sperm counts dropped to levels that can cause infertility among men who kept their phones half a meter (c. 2 feet) or less from their groins. Forty-seven percent of those who kept their phone in their pants pockets throughout the day recorded abnormally low levels of semen concentration, compared to only 11% of the general male population.
Talking on a cellphone for over an hour a day or speaking on the device when it is being charged doubles the risk for low semen concentration, the study found.
“In light of the results of the study it is certainly recommended [that men] shorten the duration of calls and avoid carrying the device near their groins, sleeping next to it, speaking on it when it’s charging (it is in fact recommended to turn it off when it’s charging) and use headphones or a headset as much as possible,” Zilberlicht was quoted by Channel 2 as saying.
Researchers said that more surveys covering larger groups of people would be necessary in order to point definitively at the damage cellular radiation can cause to male fertility.
An official from the sperm bank at Asuta, a chain of Israeli outpatient facilities, said that it was not clear-cut that dropping male fertility was related to the growing use of phones and the radiation they cause, but added that “we all have a gut feeling that there is a direct link, whether it be from cellphones or other types of radiation.”

In a stunning discovery that overturns decades of textbook teaching, researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine have determined that the brain is directly connected to the immune system by vessels previously thought not to exist. That such vessels could have escaped detection when the lymphatic system has been so thoroughly mapped throughout the body is surprising on its own, but the true significance of the discovery lies in the effects it could have on the study and treatment of neurological diseases ranging from autism to Alzheimer's disease to multiple sclerosis.
"Instead of asking, 'How do we study the immune response of the brain?' 'Why do multiple sclerosis patients have the immune attacks?' now we can approach this mechanistically. Because the brain is like every other tissue connected to the peripheral immune system through meningeal lymphatic vessels," said Jonathan Kipnis, PhD, professor in the UVA Department of Neuroscience and director of UVA's Center for Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG). "It changes entirely the way we perceive the neuro-immune interaction. We always perceived it before as something esoteric that can't be studied. But now we can ask mechanistic questions."
"We believe that for every neurological disease that has an immune component to it, these vessels may play a major role," Kipnis said. "Hard to imagine that these vessels would not be involved in a [neurological] disease with an immune component."
New Discovery in Human Body
Kevin Lee, PhD, chairman of the UVA Department of Neuroscience, described his reaction to the discovery by Kipnis' lab: "The first time these guys showed me the basic result, I just said one sentence: 'They'll have to change the textbooks.' There has never been a lymphatic system for the central nervous system, and it was very clear from that first singular observation -- and they've done many studies since then to bolster the finding -- that it will fundamentally change the way people look at the central nervous system's relationship with the immune system."
Even Kipnis was skeptical initially. "I really did not believe there are structures in the body that we are not aware of. I thought the body was mapped," he said. "I thought that these discoveries ended somewhere around the middle of the last century. But apparently they have not."
'Very Well Hidden'
The discovery was made possible by the work of Antoine Louveau, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in Kipnis' lab. The vessels were detected after Louveau developed a method to mount a mouse's meninges -- the membranes covering the brain -- on a single slide so that they could be examined as a whole. "It was fairly easy, actually," he said. "There was one trick: We fixed the meninges within the skullcap, so that the tissue is secured in its physiological condition, and then we dissected it. If we had done it the other way around, it wouldn't have worked."
After noticing vessel-like patterns in the distribution of immune cells on his slides, he tested for lymphatic vessels and there they were. The impossible existed. The soft-spoken Louveau recalled the moment: "I called Jony [Kipnis] to the microscope and I said, 'I think we have something.'"
As to how the brain's lymphatic vessels managed to escape notice all this time, Kipnis described them as "very well hidden" and noted that they follow a major blood vessel down into the sinuses, an area difficult to image. "It's so close to the blood vessel, you just miss it," he said. "If you don't know what you're after, you just miss it."
"Live imaging of these vessels was crucial to demonstrate their function, and it would not be possible without collaboration with Tajie Harris," Kipnis noted. Harris, a PhD, is an assistant professor of neuroscience and a member of the BIG center. Kipnis also saluted the "phenomenal" surgical skills of Igor Smirnov, a research associate in the Kipnis lab whose work was critical to the imaging success of the study.
Alzheimer's, Autism, MS and Beyond
The unexpected presence of the lymphatic vessels raises a tremendous number of questions that now need answers, both about the workings of the brain and the diseases that plague it. For example, take Alzheimer's disease. "In Alzheimer's, there are accumulations of big protein chunks in the brain," Kipnis said. "We think they may be accumulating in the brain because they're not being efficiently removed by these vessels." He noted that the vessels look different with age, so the role they play in aging is another avenue to explore. And there's an enormous array of other neurological diseases, from autism to multiple sclerosis, that must be reconsidered in light of the presence of something science insisted did not exist.

New York City Wi-Fi Kiosks Said to Violate Civil Rights

LinkNYCThe 7,500 high-powered Wi-Fi kiosks proposed for New York City are a violation of civil rights, say critics. The kiosks are to be discussed Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. at an NYU facility in Brooklyn. The event should be shifted to New York.
Dan Doctoroff, ex-CEO of Bloomberg and now CEO of Sidewalk Labs, builder of the Kiosks, is to speak for a half hour and then take questions at the Center for Urban Science & Progress, downtown Brooklyn.
The event is fine but the location and format are no-brainers.

It should take place at the Kimmel Center off Washington Square in New York where the New York chapter of PRSA held a career day April 2, 2013.

That was a sad day for the chapter, students, NYU and education since the press was barred and no literature table was allowed. The chapter allowed itself to be dominated by the anti-press policies of national, a staff member of the Society showing up at Kimmel to make sure no press got into the event.

Bill Doescher, 2016 chapter president, should set up an event to discuss the hazards of radiation since PR people are heavy users of cellphones and computers and work in offices that are bathed in Wi-Fi.

Holding the Doctoroff session in Brooklyn would be like the New York Times reporting the Center for Disease Control’s pullback on caution for cellphone use in the business section on a Saturday (Jan. 2, 2016) when the story belonged on page one of the general news section on a weekday.

Literature Table Needed
Since the Doctoroff appearance is on educational turf, no limits should be put on the pursuit of knowledge about the kiosks and other sources of radiation such as cellphones, cordless phones (among the worst emitters of radiation), computers, Wi-Fi routers, “smart” electrical meters, baby monitors etc.

There should be a literature table and the event should not be limited to an hour. Doctoroff and his staff should answer questions in advance since this can be a subject of almost unlimited complexity.

Financing the $200 million project, described in the Jan. 25 New Yorker, are Google and Qualcomm. It will be more than half finished by 2020. An additional 2,500 Wi-Fi “hotspots” are to be created.

Doctoroff, announcing the new company June 10, 2015, said, “We are at the beginning of a historic transformation in cities. At a time when the concerns about urban equity, costs, health and the environment are intensifying, unprecedented technological change is going to enable cities to be more efficient, responsive, flexible and resilient.”

Wireless Causes “Host of Health Problems”
Sandi Maurer, director of the EMF Safety Network, said “Environmental protections are insufficient to protect public health, children and nature” from what is a “new rapidly deployed technology.”

“Wireless disrupts cellular communications, damages immune and nervous systems, desynchronizes brain and heart rhythms, and causes headaches, sleep problems, tinnitus, anxiety and a host of other health problems.” She refers the public to bioinitiative.org.

Deborah Kopald, an independent consultant, author of "Legal and Health Probems of the Wireless Age,"is circulating a form that can be used to file and email a civil rights complaint with the New York State Dept. of Technology and Telecommunications (DOITT).
The link addresses the “NYC payphone and hotspot scheme” and says it provides forms and contacts to file complaints with the New York Attorney General.  It contains a sample letter as well.

The kiosks violate the Americans with Disabilities Act, the New York City Human Rights Law and the New York State Human Rights Law by subjecting citizens, including those with “sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation and many other medical conditions and pregnant women” to radiation, says the EMF Safety Network.

“City officials who authorize this scheme would be committing Public Endangerment in the Second Degree,” says EMF.

Under NYC Human Rights Law, those with electromagnetic sensitivities and most medical conditions would not be able to heed the advice of their own physicians, it adds.

“If a hotspot is put on the street near a home or critical institution, many people will not be able to access the sidewalk to access the building in question without getting serious symptoms and violating doctors’ orders,” said EMF.

Google’s “Wi-Fi from Space” Battled by GUARDS
Global Union Against Radiation Deployment from Space (GUARDS) is battling plans by Google, Facebook and SpaceX to launch and replace thousands of satellites to provide worldwide internet service.

The “harmful pulsed microwave radiation” violates human rights conventions due to the “serious biological effects and involuntary nature of the exposure,” says the organization.
The sky-based technology will “destroy ozone and worsen climate change due to the emission of black soot from so many rockets,” says GUARDS. “Combined with the detrimental effects RF radiation has on both flora and fauna, including bees, these global wireless projects are predicted to lead to environmental devastation and even widespread starvation.”

Diane Hickey, co-founder of the National Assn. for Children and Safe Technology, wrote on Jan. 28 to Sari Feldman, president of the American Library Assn., asking ALA to publicize the dangers of radiation, especially to children.

She said the numerous radiation emitters are “an emerging public health crisis, a five-alarm fire.” Defenders of radiation-emitters may resort to complexity but there are simple rules that people can follow now without getting a Ph.D. in electromagnetism.

Precautions for Cellphone/Computer Use
• Keep cellphones 10 inches from face
• Wash face after computer use (electrons are sticking to face)

• Unplug cordless phone base at bedtime or earlier
• Keep phone on airplane mode most of time

• Don’t sleep near cellphone that is “on”

• Don’t carry cellphone in pocket

• Don’t use cordless phone at all; they transmit 24/7 at a high level of radiation
• Have wired computer, mouse, keyboard and other wired connections in home, office, libraries, car, etc.
• Don’t use laptop keyboard

• Keep face three feet from computer monitor

• Don’t put laptop on lap

• Don’t use cellphone in a car and especially a moving car or vehicle since phone will work extra hard to bring in signal
• Only use cellphone where there is a strong signal

• Don’t let children under 13 use cellphones except in emergency (skulls are thinner than adults)

; Wi-Fi equipment in schools, libraries, offices should be replaced with wired equipment.

If you are an office worker in cubicle, make sure your head, if against a partition, is not up against the back of a computer; Children under 13 should not put Virtual Reality devices on their heads.
