Abstract
Microwave generating equipment first became common during World War 2 with the development of radar. Soviet bloc countries reported that individuals exposed to microwaves frequently developed headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, sleepiness, difficulty in concentration, poor memory, emotional instability, and labile cardiovascular function, and established stringent exposure standards. For a variety of reasons these reports were discounted in Western countries, where the prevailing belief was that there could be no adverse health effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that were not mediated by tissue heating. The reported Soviet effects were at lower intensities than those that cause heating. However, there were several accidental exposures of radar operators in Western countries that resulted in persistent symptoms similar to those described above. The Soviets irradiated the US Embassy in Moscow with microwaves during the period 1953-1975, and while no convincing evidence of elevated cancer rates was reported, there were reports of "microwave illness." Officials passed these complaints off as being due to anxiety, not effects of the microwave exposure. There is increasing evidence that the "microwave syndrome" or "electro-hypersensitivity" (EHS) is a real disease that is caused by exposure to EMFs, especially those in the microwave range. The reported incidence of the syndrome is increasing along with increasing exposure to EMFs from electricity, WiFi, mobile phones and towers, smart meters and many other wireless devices. Why some individuals are more sensitive is unclear. While most individuals who report having EHS do not have a specific history of an acute exposure, excessive exposure to EMFs, even for a brief period of time, can induce the syndrome.

Dr. R.S. Sharma, Indian government Senior Deputy Director General & Scientist of the Indian Council of Medical Research, reviews the research showing genetic damage and health effects from wireless exposures which are informing India’s new telecommunications policy. He describes how the government is supporting efforts to reduce exposures. Slides from Dr Sharma’s presentation can be found here.
Dr. Devra Davis, PhD MPH, former Clinton Presidential appointee, founding Director of the Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology of the National Academy of Sciences described current research on wireless exposures to children and what people can do to protect themselves.
Dr. George Carlo attended the lecture and came up on the podium to answer questions in the Q and A session (on the video at 1 hour 18 minutes ). Dr. Carlo is a lawyer and epidemiologist who chaired the 28 million dollar Wireless Technology Research Program that revealed cell phones could impact DNA repair and cause serious biological effects. He discusses the program and describes next steps for communities concerned about wifi in schools and cell towers on schools.

This is a report on the Landis Gyr Focus AXR-SD smart meter. This is one of two smart meters in regular use for single phase 120/240 volts AC in Pacific Gas and Electric’s (PG&E) service territory. The report is based on visual examination of a disassembled meter and non-invasive measurement of an operating meter. Privacy is a major concern with smart meters. The measurements done for this report reveal a way that consumer equipment can be identified.
Known types of electromagnetic emissions from this smart meter are:
- ELF magnetic fields
- The pulsed microwave radiation (902-928 MHz)
- The switch mode power supply switching frequency radiation (130 kHz)
- There is also a zigbee transceiver (2.5 GHz) for the home area network. At the time of this writing, I know of no implementation of this feature.
- Part one looks inside the smartmeter, identifying the parts associated with the emissions.
- Part two documents measurements of the switch mode power supply and discusses the privacy issue.
Conclusion
This paper intends to demystify some components of the Landis + Gyr Focus AXR-SD. This meter and other smart meters have triggered electrical sensitivity in people who did not know it had been introduced into their environment. It is presented with the belief that good technical information is essential to countering the rush into a poorly conceived “upgrade” to a smart grid. That our electrical infrastructure needs upgrading is not in question. However, layering high-tech components on top of aging much lower tech components while largely ignoring the issue of electrical sensitivity even as the evidence is coming in that smart meters are aggravating the problem is not in the public interest.
This paper presents evidence based on manufacturer specifications and field measurement that the switching frequency of a Landis + Gyr smart meter SMPS is about 130 kHz. Further, that this creates a harmonic rich signal that is readily induced in the hot legs of a 100-amp residential service entrance. Evidence from field measurement is also presented showing that this harmonic-rich switching frequency is radiated from the meter.
Studies are coming out that show these frequencies, sometimes called intermediate frequencies, from common devices can do biological harm, especially if there is direct contact between ones body and the device.
This paper also shows the current wave forms of two switching power supplies. We see harmonic distortion indicating a low power factor and a spectrum analysis of this harmonic distortion. The paper explains how these images can be used for product identification. Power factor correction of a SMPS will change any such signature and quite possibly reduce the likelihood of making a positive identification of the associated device. Power factor correction has no effect on the switching frequency or its harmonics.

Self-made billionaire John Caudwell speaks about the disease which has affected him, his ex-wife and three of his children
The billionaire founder of Phones4U has revealed that his whole family have been struck down by the potentially deadly Lyme disease.
Earlier this month John Caudwell told the Telegraph of his 20-year-old son Rufus’s long struggle with the disease, which started with “panic attacks, serious agoraphobia and a terror of sickness” before being correctly diagnosed in February.

Now Mr Caudwell has admitted that he, his former wife, Kate McFarlane, and their two daughters, Rebekah, 35, and Rhiannon, 27, have all tested positive for Lyme disease as well.
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can spread to humans through ticks. There are around 2,000 to 3,000 new cases in England and Wales every year.
Symptoms can include a distinctive bull’s eye shaped rash, but a third of sufferers will not get the rash and other symptoms can be difficult to recognise, like tiredness, muscle pain and headaches.
Mr Caudwell, 62, described the disease as “a kind of alien microbe in Rufus’ body, slowly but surely destroying his life”.

Now the rest of the family have discovered they are also infected with the debilitating illness that has afflicted Rufus for nine years and left him bed-ridden.
“It’s completely devastating. I have no idea how it’s happened to my family,” Mr Caudwell told the Daily Mail.
“When I heard my son had Lyme disease, it was after nine years of his suffering — with no symptoms that were obviously Lyme disease. It mimics other illnesses.”

Mr Caudwell now believes the disease “could be congenital or transmitted person to person” and fears his relatives are not the only family suffering in the UK.
He said: “I just saw these as a couple of private illnesses that we’d got to deal with. But then when more of the family got diagnosed, I started looking into it. It could be affecting millions in Britain, it could be an epidemic.”
He and his family have suffered anxiety-related illnesses, thyroid problems and other health issues.
Mr Caudwell featured on the BBC programme Britain’s Spending Secrets in August, showing Anne Robinson around his vast residence in Mayfair, where he admitted the £90m property had not bought him happiness.
His estimated £2bn fortune has allowed him to pay for private treatment, which he acknowledges others cannot afford.
“The NHS isn’t doing enough. A lot of sufferers are selling their worldly goods to have private treatment. My heart bleeds for them.”

Mr Caudwell also has two younger children from other relationships, 13-year-old Scarlett and 11-year-old Jacobi.
