High-stakes testing, obsessive data collection, and lofty promises of technology’s potential to “revolutionize” education are contributing to ever-increasing amounts of school-based screen-time. The invasion is occuring with complete disregard for what it taking away from in terms of basic developmental needs, as well as for screentime's negative influence on nervous system health.  Health and development risks aside, research suggests computer use in schools drags down test scores(link is external).  
Why collect copious amounts of data if the process of data collection itself negatively impacts student performance? Or the ability to acquire real-life skills? Not surprisingly, when education policies are ineffective and impractical but continue to move forward like a freight train, what’s typically greasing the wheels is--you guessed it--money.
This month's post is by Tara Ehrcke(link is external), a high school math teacher and public education advocate in British Columbia. I highly recommend reading the more complete article found here(link is external), as Ms Ehrcke manages to paint a disturbing but clear picture of the complex public-private relationship that’s placing a stranglehold on public education in the US and Canada. Below are snippets of her insightful commentary:

A false narrative about our schools is spreading through the education community and the public at large. Apparently, with the turn of the clock and the dawn of a new century, our schools are suddenly inadequate. As Canadians for 21st Century Learning and Innovationarticulates the issue, “public education in Canada must be transformed to position Canadians for success in the knowledge and digital age.”1  The Partnership for 21st Century Skills puts it this way: “Every child in the U.S. needs 21st century knowledge and skills to succeed as effective citizens, workers and leaders.”2 A common turn of phrase is that we must leave behind the “factory model” of schooling and embrace the technological change of the new century.
A peek beneath the surface reveals that the drive for change and the changes sought are not new, necessary or unique, but in fact familiar — cost cutting, privatization, and restructuring public education around technology. Despite the promises, 21st Century Learning will not bring “success”. The crisis of “factory schooling” is manufactured. And the proposed solution — radical technological transformation — has the potential to damage our schools while diverting public money to corporate profit.
Not surprisingly, technology is almost always identified as a component of 21st Century Learning. But this isn't simply adding new technology to aid in the delivery of curriculum or to allow new teaching methods. It is not a matter of adding a few computer labs or replacing textbooks with eBooks.  In the 21st Century Learning model technology defines the learning methods. It is absolutely backwards - rather than pedagogy defining if and what technologies are used, instead, it is technology driving the choices for learning. As such, it is fundamentally different than the type of technology integration we've seen in the past. It is also, ironically, antithetical to a student-centred or personalized approach because the technology is driving decisions, not student needs.
Whole books have been written on the degree to which technology should or shouldn't be in our schools, but we can consider just a few statistics to get a sense of where 21st Century Learning advocates would like to take us. A paper by CISCO provides a helpful chart documenting what media consumption Dutch teenagers do during an average day(link is external).
The question CISCO asks is, "How can traditional modes of classroom instruction engage and inspire students when life outside the classroom has changed so dramatically? In 2007, teens in the United States spent 40 percent of their media time on cell phones, the Internet, and games, up from 16 percent in 1998. For many learners, class is the only time in their day  when they completely ‘disconnect.’”3 Rather than question how much is too much technology, this technology company wonders how we can increase the screen time of teenagers by filling in the one relatively screen free time - school. Meanwhile the Canadian Pediatric Society [and the American Academy of Pediatrics] recommend a two hour screen time limit for children. Significant social issues related to screen time include obesity, mental health and even changing brain chemistry for younger children.
To sell more IT products, the 21st Century Learning advocates create a need for those products. No longer should schools spend their resource and IT budgets only on textbooks and computer labs. Anytime, anywhere, collaborative, integrated, blended learning requires a massive infusion of new IT products.
Considering just one corporate player, Pearson, we see the objectives identified in this report written by Donald Gutstein (link is external)for the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation:
“According to investment research firm Sanford Bernstein & Co., Pearson is pursuing three  growth strategies. First, the company is investing in content and technology to increase its  market share of the education industry. Second, the company is restructuring away from the FT  Group and reinvesting the proceeds into the high-growth areas of emerging markets (Brazil,  India, China, South Africa) and consumer—rather than publicly—financed education. The third  strategy is new, and  Bernstein predicts it will ‘revolutionize how education is delivered to  students around the world, starting with the United States.’ It is an ambitious attempt to  further commercialize education by claiming its products and services will raise student and  teacher performance while at the same time cutting spending. If successful, Bernstein argues,  ‘it would make every teacher and school student in the United States a potential customer’ by  ‘personalizing education in U.S. schools through technology and best practices.’”4
Pearson appears to have the US government firmly in its corner with the launch of the ‘Digital Promise’ announced in 2011. Digital Promise, “will work with leading researchers, entrepreneurs, and schools to identify and spur breakthrough learning technologies that deliver the best results for students, parents, and teachers.”5 
Without doubt there is a place for technology in schools and classrooms. It is also likely that new technological developments can provide useful tools to enhance learning. Online and blended models certainly have a place to address issues such as geographic distance and schooling in small communities with few children. 
What is troubling is that rather than a broad discussion about the potential new uses of technology along with the potential risks and pitfalls, the dialogue is one-sided and misleading.

Company To Blanket City Streets With WiFi Connected “Smart Pavement”

Awareness continues to increase surrounding the health dangers of Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) emanating from our daily gadgets, as well as from the rise of the Smart Grid.  For example, a prominent neuroscientist went on record in a lecture to the medical community itself where he exposed the many health risks as well as an industry-wide attempt by telecom to cover up the negative consequences. A world-renown biochemist is seeking to abolish WiFi in schools. And a British ER physician has made it her mission to educate people about what steps they can take to minimize exposure and damage to WiFi. A slew of peer-review scientific studies support the warnings of these experts.
So what happens when your entire city becomes one giant WiFi signal?
Telecom giant Virgin Media has been given the green light to begin doing just that.  Coverage will be enabled by “discreet street furniture” and the “UK’s first Smart Pavement.” 

The pilot will begin with a focus on the center of the town of Chesham, UK where all 21,000 residents and businesses can use the network. The Chiltern District Council has joined forces and is touting the increased connectivity at massively increased speeds up to 166Mbps – 7X the average in the UK.
Virgin Media’s press release cites one very happy local business owner who sees potential:
Martin Parkes, local business owner and spokesperson for The Better Chesham Group, said: “It’s great that our customers have access to Virgin Media’s public Wi-Fi both in and outside our salon. We’re a very unique high street with many independent shops so we don’t have the IT infrastructure that big chains benefit from. This will hugely help levelling the playing field and will hopefully bring more people to Chesham too.”
The company has high hopes that this will not be contained to one test city; rather, they make it clear that their mission is much wider in scope:
Virgin Media is building better digital infrastructure by re-drawing the UK WiFi map. It is the first in a series of initiatives to deliver better out-of-home connectivity. It is not just about extending the company’s ultrafast network to more homes and upgrading speeds to Vivid 200Mbps but being the defacto provider of trusted connectivity both in the home and out of the home.
Gregor McNeil, Managing Director of Consumer at Virgin Media said: “Not only is this the first time we’ve built metropolitan WiFi directly from our street cabinets, it is also the UK’s first deployment of a WiFi connected pavement. It is literally public WiFi under your feet. We want to build more networks like this across the UK and encourage more forward thinking councils just like Chesham to get in touch.” (additional emphasis added)
Even if you don’t believe having a permanent WiFi signal radiating across the city under your feet is a danger to your health, another aspect of pervasive WiFi may be of concern: privacy and surveillance.
It is true that citizens of the UK already have become one of the most constantly surveilled on the planet, so perhaps they are becoming desensitized, but in the States it was a major news story when Seattle was discovered to have put in a secret WiFi mesh network funded by Homeland Security.  The discovery led the ACLU to document the ways that residents and visitors could be spied upon while having their movements fully tracked. Although most of the outrage was directed at the secretive nature of the plan, the surveillance component is clearly present as a justified concern.
There is also new WiFi tracking technology being developed that does not even need a connected device to home in on individuals or groups of people. You can read the chronicle of those developments HERE.

Finally, this is about more than having super-fast Internet to download your favorite movie in seconds while you wait for the bus, or to boost your business capabilities.  It’s about the rise of fully connected Smart Cities that are multi-use, imposed without debate, and are very easily warped for less than noble purposes. It’s about merging the domestic “Internet of Things” with an industrial smart grid that is part of a technocracy endgame as defined by the UN’s Agenda 21. It is an all-encompassing agenda that has political support and the investment of every major tech company on the planet.
It is imperative that we learn and share what this overall Smart Cities agenda entails, and reveal each piece of the superstructure that is being built in front of us. The road has now been paved….

Sun, Apr 26, 2015 (HealthDay News) — Up to half of very young children use smartphones and tablets in some way before their first birthday, a new study finds. But parents still worry about their children's use of mobile media, a separate study says.
"We were not surprised to find out children were exposed to mobile devices at a young age," said Dr. Hilda Kabali, a pediatric resident at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, and the author of the study on babies' mobile use. "Most parents now have mobile devices and children are attracted to them."
In her group's study, 370 parents from a mostly urban, low-income minority community answered questions about their young children's mobile device use.
By age 1 year, more than one-third of their babies had touched or scrolled the screen of a mobile device such as a smartphone. And by age 2, more than half had scrolled screens, called someone, watched a TV show on the device, played video games or used an app, Kabali found.
Also by 2 years of age, more than one-quarter were using mobile devices for at least an hour a day.
Parents often used the devices to calm or entertain their babies and toddlers while they were busy, the study showed.
For example, 60 percent of parents said their children played with a smartphone or iPad-like tablet while the parent ran errands, and 73 percent gave their kids the phone while parents did chores around the house.
Just under one-third of parents had used mobile devices to help put their children to sleep, and two-thirds had used them to calm the child. Yet only 30 percent of the parents had discussed their children's media use with their pediatrician.
The American Academy of Pediatrics discourages any screen time, including TVs, computers, smartphones and tablets, by children under age 2.
"Although mobile devices are ubiquitous in young children's lives, we don't yet know the impact mobile devices can have on young children," Kabali said. "What is realistic is for parents to guide their children's media experience."
The other study, involving 30 in-depth interviews with the caregivers of children up to age 8, revealed that parents have a number of concerns about mobile media.
"We were struck with how intensely many parents wanted to vent their feelings about this topic," said study author Dr. Jenny Radesky, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine. "Many expressed feeling that mobile and interactive media are proliferating so rapidly that they aren't sure how to keep up, how to judge good from bad apps for kids, how to say 'no' when their child demands more, or how to keep their child interested in 'old-fashioned' or hands-on play."
Parents also worried about children's social skills or imagination if they used too much mobile media or their ability to keep up in a tech-savvy world if they didn't use the media at all.
Limit-setting and enforcing also were challenging for parents, the survey showed. In some homes, mobile devices served to calm difficult children or provide a quiet time.
What effect this early exposure to mobile devices might have on children depends on several factors, Radesky said. Three key components that matter include content, amount and co-viewing, she said.
Beneficial content is age-appropriate, slow-paced and educational, and children learn more from media when engaging with it with another adult, Radesky said.
Both studies were scheduled for presentation this weekend at the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting in San Diego. Data and conclusions presented at meetings are usually considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.
Concerns that mobile use might harm children's attention spans or lead to language delays are unfounded, said Susan Neuman, a professor of early childhood and literacy at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development at New York University.
In fact, she said, careful, deliberate use of multimedia may even promote some vocabulary development, and the learning children do before kindergarten may need to change how teachers teach.
"I think the average kid who has access to these apps coming into preschool will be advanced," Neuman said. "There's a lot of independent learning going on very early on, and if the kindergarten or first grade teacher takes advantage of that, great. If they don't, I think we're going to have a lot of bored kids with the traditional kindergarten program."
There is still a lot more to learn about how young children can benefit from mobile media and at what ages, said Neuman. "We've just begun to see the capability of what's possible," she said.

Any and all plans to implement Wi-Fi or cell phone towers within the Sequim city limits are on hold. 
The Sequim City Council approved a six-month moratorium on wireless communication support towers on Oct. 26 via a 5-1 vote with councilor Dennis Smith opposed and Ken Hays absent.
The moratorium went into immediate effect and includes all zones except public facility zones, according to Ordinance 2015-018. 
“New technology allows this, but appropriate consideration needs to be made for safety so they don’t become ‘wi-fry’ towers,” City Attorney Craig Ritchie, said. “That is something we don’t have regulations for.”
Although the city has yet to receive any applications for the construction and installation of either Wi-Fi or cell towers, the moratorium allows city officials the time to create appropriate safety and aesthetic regulations to support the technology. 
“We didn’t have to worry about this before because the technology wasn’t good enough to have good transmission from shorter towers, but now we have to worry about it,” Ritchie said. “The City of Sequim does not have sufficient control over the potential use of our rights of way by cell phone and wireless companies for mini-tower structures.” 
Already, cities like Spokane have dealt with the onset of wireless companies in pursuit of real estate to install mini-communication towers, which are then leased to companies like AT&T, Verizon or Sprint. There’s also a Wi-Fi net-work relying on similar technology in Port Angeles, but the towers used are primarily placed on city-owned telephone poles, Ritchie said, whereas the City of Sequim doesn’t own its telephone poles. 
“What we’re really looking at is almost nothing but safety,” Ritchie said. “As a hypothetical example, X-rays are a safe technology, but testing X-rays is important because they’re adjustable and you can fry things with X-rays if set incorrectly that otherwise are wonderful things, therapeutic, diagnostic agents.”
Once developed, Ritchie expects the local regulations to be similar to those created in Spokane where the data showing how testing will be done, how often and the parameters, are required. 
“As I understand it from our consultant, it (the safety) has to do with how stuff is aimed,” he said. “So if it’s aimed right, it should be fine.”
Once the needed regulations and associated requirements are in place, Ritchie anticipates working with companies seeking to install mini-communication towers, he said, as the city isn’t against better cell phone coverage and Wi-Fi access. 
Consistent with the adoption of a moratorium without first holding a public hearing, a hearing has been scheduled on Monday, Nov. 9.

We just caught Danish Cancer Society in a serious lie! 

There's just been a big campaign to collect money for cancer research and for that campaign, a large Danish TV-news channel website ran an article about "cancer myths" where they quoted D.C.S for this statement (translated):

"It has long been speculated whether the radiation from mobile phones increases the risk of cancer, but there are currently no studies that show that this is the case.".

Wow! We contacted the TV-channel and they immediately removed the false statement and apologized in the article that the part about cellphones had not been factual. So now the TV-news editors have to come to terms with the factthat D.C.S has mislead them! We then called D.C.S and asked them to publicly inform that their quote was false, because people that read the original article got wrong impression that cellphones are cancer-risk free. Theycompletely refused to do so.

We then called Christoffer Johanssen, told him the quote and he responded by saying: "D.C.S is just an NGO with a political agenda". Yes, those were his real words. He's distancing himself from D.C.S!

I'll keep you informed on this matter...but please don't send this out on mailing list yet, until we get to "grill" D.C.S some more :)
