Mother who kept her phone in her bra every day for 10 YEARS is convinced it caused her terminal breast cancer

Mother who kept her phone in her bra every day for 10 YEARS is convinced it caused her terminal breast cancer

  • Wendy Holt, 51, kept her phone in her bra so it would be within easy reach
  • Was devastated to be diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer
  • Says radiation from her phone caused it as she has no history of cancer
  • The cancer has returned to her lymph nodes and she may not live past 53
A mother-of one believes keeping her mobile phone in her bra every day for a decade gave her terminal breast cancer.

Wendy Holt, 51, from Bracknell, Berkshire, fell into a habit of keeping her phone in her bra when she went out so it would be within easy reach.

However she now believes radiation from her phone was to blame for her breast cancer diagnosis in 2012, as she had no family history of the disease.

Despite no longer storing her phone in this way - and getting the all clear of cancer - the disease returned in her lungs and lymph nodes earlier this year.

Her terminal diagnosis means it's unlikely she will reach her 53rd birthday.

Ms Holt, who runs her own digital printing firm, said: 'I will obviously never be able to prove it, and I know there's a lot of debate around the issue, but I firmly believe the phone radiation is to blame for my cancer.

'I got my first phone in around 1999 and I was quite big-busted, so I would store it down there and nobody would be able to tell.

'It was pressed against my skin for probably 70 per cent of the day for about ten years - and I didn't give it a thought.

'I want to speak out to make other people stop the habit.

'People might disagree with my theory, but it's my belief and I don't want this to happen to anyone else.

'Even keeping your phone in your pocket is better than what I did, where it was trapped in one place against my skin for hours on end.'

Ms Holt, who married her long-term partner Keith last year, first noticed something was wrong in January 2012.

However, because she hadn't found a lump, cancer didn't initially cross her mind.
She said: 'My right breast was swollen and heavy and looked like orange peel.

'I thought I might have just slept on it in a funny position. I wasn't panicking about it being cancer, because you get told to look out for lumps and I didn't have any.'

But upon seeking medical help, she was given the devastating diagnosis of inflammatory breast cancer.

This is a rare and aggressive disease, usually detected at a much more advanced stage than other types of breast cancer.

The return of Miss Holt's cancer means it is unlikely she will see her 53rd birthday. She is pictured at age 51 with husband Keith

'My cancer was so visibly obvious to the doctors that I was practically told on the same day that it was cancer,' said Ms Holt.

After a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis, she underwent a double mastectomy and had her lymph nodes cleared.

'It was a horrible time and it slowly dawned on me that I had probably caused my own cancer by keeping my phone in my bra,' she said.

'I suddenly had to question it and if I saw a friend doing the same thing, I would shout at them.

'The doctors told me it wasn't that simple and I couldn't blame myself, but deep down I knew the cause.'

 Wendy Holt, 51
After chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she and partner Keith decided to get married - and wed in Turkey last year in front of 40 family and friends.

'It was everything I had wished for,' she said. 'Then I finished my treatment and life basically went back to normal.

'I was going back for six-monthly check-ups to keep an eye on things but I am a really positive person, so I felt lucky to be in my position.'

But in September last year, just three months after getting married, she developed a persistent cough that left her breathless,

She was initially treated for asthma, but by February this year her respiratory problems had become so severe, she was confined to a wheelchair.

Commenting on her diagnosis, Ms Holt said: 'Keith and I try to stay positive but of course some days are harder than others. I'll say, "What if I only have two weeks left?" And he'll reply, "Well, let's make them count"

'I was breathless all the time and I knew I wasn't just getting unfit. The inhalers weren't working and my breathing just got worse.

'I couldn't even lie down and had to sleep sat up in a dining chair. It was really frightening.'

A CT scan then revealed a more sinister diagnosis.

THE EXPERTS' VIEW...

Leading oncologist Professor Karol Sikora, of Cancer Partners UK, said it was ‘unlikely’ that mobile phone use - or the way she had stored it - had triggered Ms Holt’s cancer.

He told MailOnline: ‘There have been thousands of studies into the safety of mobile phones but no link has been established with breast cancer – even in these unusual circumstances.

‘There have been some papers about a certain type of brain tumour, called gliomas, but in this case, it is intrinsically unlikely that contact with the phone was to blame for this lady’s cancer.

‘She would be exposed to a minor, trivial dose of electromagnetic radiation when the phone went off, but that would be it.’
And Carolyn Rogers, Clinical Nurse Specialist at Breast Cancer Care said:

'It’s not possible to isolate any one factor as a cause of breast cancer, however, at present there is no evidence available to suggest that radio frequency waves from mobile phones can cause breast cancer.
'The biggest risk factors for developing breast cancer are being female and getting older – 80 per cent diagnosed are over the age of 50.

'These are factors we cannot control. For some, having a significant family history can increase your risk, however fewer than 10 per cent of all breast cancers are caused by inheriting a faulty breast cancer gene.
Not only had the cancer returned in her lymphatic system and was pushing against her lungs and windpipe, but she also had secondary inflammatory breast cancer in her lungs and lymphatic system.

Ms Holt said: 'It was horrifying, as I thought I was being treated for a breathing problem, only to find out I could be dead within two months. I thought I'd already gone through the worst.

'I've had five months of chemotherapy and I'm on medication to try and keep the cancer at bay.

'Doctors said they'd try to get me through the rest of this year, then after that just for as long as they could.

'Who knows if I'll even reach my birthday next year? Once the cancer breaks through again, there is a low survival rate.

'I don't think I'll be able to push on for years and years. We're going to Malta later this month for a big family holiday, in case it's my last.

'In our family there's my daughter Nikki and Keith's kids, my three step-children, and having to tell them I had cancer was very hard. It was painful enough the first time, but now it's terminal and they know that Mum is going to die.

'Keith and I try to stay positive but of course some days are harder than others. I'll say, "What if I only have two weeks left?" And he'll reply, "Well, let's make them count".
'We recently found out my daughter is pregnant, which was a lovely surprise and something to look forward to.

'I didn't think I'd live to become a grandmother, and maybe I still won't, but we'll have to see. I only hope that other people can learn from my experience.'

However leading oncologist Professor Karol Sikora, of Cancer Partners UK, said it was ‘unlikely’ that mobile phone use - or the way she had stored it - had triggered Ms Holt’s cancer.

He told MailOnline: ‘There have been thousands of studies into the safety of mobile phones but no link has been established with breast cancer – even in these unusual circumstances.

Special Report: Connected Car Will Be Hot Spot, Literally and Figuratively

Special Report: Connected Car Will Be Hot Spot, Literally and Figuratively

BY ERNEST WORTHMAN

October 6, 2015 — Look for the connected car to be the next big paradigm shift in mobile communications. Trends are showing up, and research companies like Infonetics and Gartner are predicting that there will be 250 million connected cars on the roads by 2020, the time the Internet of Things (IoT) will up and running and 5G will be launched. According to Gartner, “the proliferation of vehicle connectivity will have implications across the major functional areas of telematics, automated driving, infotainment and mobility services.”
Connected vehicles of all types will integrate everything from small cells and big cells to Wi-Fi, LTE/LTE-U, Bluetooth and Zigbee. The vehicle will literally be roving radio cells. And, they will be a broad platform for all types of services and analytics that will become a gigantic revenue generator.
And all of this will be embedded. Connected cars will act as relay points with automatic integration of smart devices. No longer will one need to carry a smart device while driving; the car itself will be the smart device, capable of everything from communications to self-driving to automatic synchronization with the IoT, the smart home, your family and work…your life.
The smart car will be as integral and indispensable tomorrow, as the smart phone is today. And it won’t be just the Teslas, BMWs, Jags, or Mercedes. It will be every vehicle. That same smart vehicle platform will also include mass transportation.
Infonetics predicts that, “revenue derived by service providers for the connectivity and other basic value-added services they provide to the automotive, transport, and logistics (a.k.a. connected car) segment to more than triple from 2013 to 2018, to $16.9 billion worldwide. The connected car services market is growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25 percent, nearly 21 times the growth rate expected for traditional mobile voice and data services during the same time period, according to Infonetics.
On a parallel path, the European, the Middle Eastern and African market (EMEA) has started to look at how to integrate the multitude of various sectors that comprise the intelligent vehicle market into a single M2M platform that can become ubiquitous across the driving landscape. There is little solid progress here, simply because there is such a diverse transportation infrastructure worldwide. But at least this show that there are people starting to think about it.

Anyway, if much of what is going on in this sector is even close to what is going to occur, the implications are staggering, from both a technological and an economic perspective.

Get Wired - An Electrosmog Conference in Sussex on Sunday, 1st November.

Beneficial Environments and Stop Smart Meters are jointly hosting a conference in Bolney, near Haywards Heath on Sunday 1st November, 9.30am to 3.30pm.  Join us for a day of presentations and expert panel discussions with scientists, medical doctors, academics and researchers, on the implications of wireless technology and electro-pollution and the steps you can take to protect yourself and your family.

Why I believe that attending Get Wired 2015 is so important and why its focus is right for its time — it is about how we get to safer, healthier living.  By our conference chair, Prof. Victor Newman PhD.

As an innovation specialist with a personal interest in the health risks associated with 'electrosmog', it is obvious to me that playing adversarial victim games is unlikely to deliver the systemic change that we require.  And, in an age of increasing digital connectivity, it is also obvious that this change must engage telecoms and electronics companies in making safer products.  Change in both respects is both necessary and inevitable.

Corporate politics tends toward investing in expensive, defensive behaviours to maintain market share; by attacking critics instead of by innovating, by generating doubt over science instead of by creating competitive advantage through new, safer and superior products.  The present path is one of ignorance, denial and short-termism; whilst the path we need to take involves informed, long-term thinking and responsible, leadership.

It could be that the fear of class action lawsuits destroying shareholder value in companies and national prestige is holding much of the industry back.  It could be that for a long time, directors at Volkswagen — at the highest level — felt that they had no choice but to continue their emissions test charade — because to take responsibility, to admit to it and to take action would expose them to charges of complicity, personal liability and consequences.

And so our strategy vis-a-vis artificial EMF pollution now, must be to help these industrial turkeys adopt intelligent and enlightened forms of self-interest — by helping them to vote for a new kind of Christmas, and to collaborate by becoming part of the solution.  To do otherwise is to hold onto an unsustainable, irresponsible and obsolete past, the grip on which becomes weaker with every new, peer-reviewed scientific journal paper.

We must demand, inform, and help, industry to take the initiative, and to change current product standards — without waiting to be forced by statute or scandal.  There is simply too much at stake.

I look forward to meeting you.

Victor.

EHT Lauds Israeli Ban on WiFi in Kindergarten and Precautions of Limits Children's Exposures

EHT Lauds Israeli Ban on WiFi in Kindergarten and Precautions of Limits Children's Exposures

Additionally, the Italian State of Tyrol Calls for Limiting Wireless in Schools

This press release was orginally distributed by SBWire

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/22/2015 -- As of this fall, Israel and Italy are officially recommending schools reduce children's exposures to wireless radiation. The Israeli Ministry of Health has initiated a major public awareness effort to reduce wireless and electromagnetic radiation exposures to children. In similar action, the Italian State Parliament of South Tyrol voted to allow the application of the precautionary principle to replace existing wireless networks whenever possible with wired networks or those that emit less radiation.

The Israeli Ministry of Health (MoH) recommendations are published in the Environmental Health in Israel Report 201 5 which states that "Precautions should be strictly enforced with regard to children, who are more sensitive to developing cancer."

The Report makes the following points:

Cell Phones : "The MoH recommends sensible use of cellular and wireless technology, including: considering alternatives like landline telephones"

MoH recommendations include: use a speaker or handsfree phone accessory or (nonwireless) personal earphone in order to distance the telephone from the body, reduce the amount and duration of calls, and in areas of weak reception reduce calls because of higher radiation.

Children: MoH recommends: "refraining from installing the base of wireless phones in a bedroom, work room, or children's room."

Schools: Levels of nonionizing radiation were measured in 25 schools nationwide and "based on these findings, the MoEP recommends that students remain at a distance of at least 1.5 meters from electrical cabinets and that use of wireless communication networks in schools be reduced."

Reduce Exposure in Cars: The MoH recommends not using cellphones in closed places like cars or elevators, buses, and trains unless there is an external antenna "due to amplified radiation in such places." "When driving, a handsfree device should be used for calls. It is recommended to install an antenna outside the vehicle and to use a line connection between the telephone and the speaker as opposed to using Bluetooth."

Research: Previous research findings in Israel "clearly indicated a link between cellphone use for more than 10 years and the development of tumors in the salivary glands." Israel is currently a partner in two additional international studies: (1) MOBIKids. a multicenter study involving experts from 16 countries who are examining potential associations between use of communication devices and other environmental factors and risk of brain tumors, and (2) the GERoNiMO (Generalised EMF Research using Novel Methods) project, which uses an integrated approach and expertise from 13 countries to further the state of knowledge on EMF and health.

The Report concludes with a chapter by Linda S. Birnbaum, Director of the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and National Toxicology Program, who states, "Israel is a world leader in research on the health effects of nonionizing radiation. If some of the studies turn out to be harbingers of things to come, we may have major health consequences from the nearly ubiquitous presence of wireless equipment."

The recently published ISRAEL 2015 RF Safety Report details current actions on EMFS such as:

New Public Education Website: The Israeli government launched the public education website TNUDA (http://www.tnuda.org.il) of the National Information Center for NonIonizing Radiation to guide the public and decision makers on the educated use of technology.

Guidelines for the installation and operation of WiFi networks in schools: Following a petition seeking an outright ban on WiFi in Schools, the government is banning WiFi in kindergartens and restricting hours of use in schools, installing equipment with exposures to be set as low as possible, and monitoring radio frequency (RF) radiation levels.

Government Testing finds that Mobile Phones Violate Manufacturers' Reported SAR: In a study conducted by the Ministry for Environmental Protection and the Holon Institute of Technology, the SAR of 10 models of mobile phones was measured using phantoms. The measured SAR exceeded the SAR declared by the manufacturer, when the phone was held close to the head and in bad reception mode (100% of the maximum power).

ELF EMF limits are recommended at numbers far below international limits. These recommendations were set to account for research showing links to leukemia. "The Ministry of Health (MoH) jointly recommend a threshold of two milligauss on an average annual basis when planning an electrical facility or four milligauss on a daily average." A study performed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and by the Education Ministry has found that in more than 60% of the schools in Israel at least one classroom had magnetic fields exceeding 0.4 ?T. Action was taken to reduce exposure in these schools.

Headsets and safety information required with every new mobile phone: According to a settlement agreement accepted by the Tel AvivYafo District Court in February 2014, cellular operators must inform buyers of new mobile phones about the radiation safety instructions as formulated by the manufacturer, provide a handsfree kit with every new mobile phone, and provide information on the safe use of mobile phones on its website.

National radiofrequency monitoring program: The Ministry of Environmental Protection is operating a national RF monitoring system with stations that continuously measure the entire range of RF and transmit the data to a central computer that analyzes and displays online the results of measurements.

On June 10, 2015, the Italian State Parliament of South Tyrol voted to allow the application of the precautionary principle to cell phones mandating the state government to:

1. To replace existing wireless networks whenever possible with networks that emit less radiation at schools, preschools, hospitals, nursing homes, and other public facilities.

2. Establish a working group whose mandate it is to assess these new technologies and their exposure levels. With regard to wireless communication technologies, mobile Internet access, and public health, the working group shall clarify which technologies emit less radiation and provide sustainable technology options

3. To start an education and awareness campaign that informs about possible health risks, especially regarding the unborn, infants, children, and adolescents and that develops guidelines for a safer use of cell phones, smartphones, and WiFi.

First US Public School District Limits Wi-Fi Radiation Exposure to Students and Staff

First US Public School District Limits Wi-Fi Radiation Exposure to Students and Staff

Ashland, Massachusetts Public Schools have implemented Wi-Fi Device "Best Practices" which include turning the Wi-Fi off when not in use and keeping devices on a table.

Ashland, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/28/2015 -- Based on its own review of the matter, the Ashland Public School District is reducing wireless radiation exposures to children by instituting district wide "best practices for mobile devices". Spurred by parent Cecelia Doucette's concerns about the lack of safety data on Wi-Fi and children, the district investigated the issue and developed a policy to substantially reduce wireless exposures to students and staff. Doucette not only brought the issue to the district's attention, but then also worked with state legislatures who introduced two bills concerning electromagnetic radiation this session. The Environmental Health Trust submitted written testimony on MA Senate Bill 1222 after expert scientists presented information on wireless health risks at a briefing at the Massachusetts State House in June 2015.

Since wireless devices are constantly emitting radiation even when the user is not using the Internet, the instruction to "turn it off when not in use " stops the Wi-Fi antennas from continuously emitting radiation and is one simple way to reduce the radiation dose and exposure time for children and staff.

Instructions for "Best Practices" are posted in every classroom and include:

- Turn off the device when not in use
- Turn Wi-Fi on only when needed
- Always place the mobile device on a solid surface
- Viewing distance should be a minimum of 12 inches from the screen
- Specific product information guides are available through the IT department
- We ask that staff members regularly remind and instruct students in using best practices in regards to mobile devices

Ashland's Best Practice of "keeping the device on a table" and no closer than a 12 inch viewing distance is critically important. Laptops and tablets have fine print warnings buried in their manuals specifically stating that the laptop should be at least 8 inches away from the user so that the user is not exposed to radiation levels that exceed as-tested FCC levels. If a device is used on a lap, as is common practice, the student could receive radiation levels far exceeding FCC limits. FCC limits are set to prevent the radiation from heating the brain and body but are not set to avoid chronic impacts on the developing nervous system or reproductive organs.

Many are unaware of FCC fine print advisories in the manuals of every wireless device confirming as-tested distances set to avoid heating. Cell phones, laptops and even baby monitors have these specific instructions in their product information guides. By referring to the product information guides, Ashland Public Schools are informing people about the need to keep a distance between the device and our bodies. As a public service, Environmental Health Trust (EHT) has compiled these fine print warnings on their website Showthefineprint.org.

It is important to note that even if users comply with these FCC recommended distances as stated in the device manual, accumulating research shows that biological damage can occur from wireless radiation levels far lower than these FCC levels. FCC limits are only set to protect people from heating harm and do not address non-thermal effects.

This ground breaking policy action by the Massachusetts school district is indicative of the wave of parents raising concerns about Wi-Fi across the country. Ashland, Massachusetts parent Cecelia Doucette wrote an article in Ashland Local Town Pages about these new best practices. Significant news and print media have picked the issue up after Massachusetts parents filed a lawsuit against a private boarding school alleging the school did not accommodate their 12-year-old child's diagnosed debilitating sensitivity to the school's WiFi system.

Ashland is the first US public school to create such policy on wireless transmitting devices. However, this US Massachusetts school district now joins dozens of schools and governments that have already implemented even more stringent measures to reduce wireless exposure to children. For example, Israel and France have banned Wi-Fi in kindergarten. The European Union recommends wired Internet rather than wireless in schools.

"Right To Know" efforts by local governments are also moving across the United States. A judge just upheld Berkeley's new Cell Phone Right To Know Ordinance which requires cell phone sellers to tell customers about these FCC radio frequency radiation distances.

Suffolk County in New York voted to label wireless routers in all public buildings including schools. The US United Federation of Teachers Union now hosts a webpage on how to reduce exposures to protect pregnant women, other staff members and students.

The Environmental Health Trust maintains a regularly updated database of these worldwide precautionary policies on wireless related to children and schools.
