International EMF Scientist Appeal

WHO: It's time for a change

The World Health Organization promotes the radio frequency radiation guidelines adopted by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). Many countries have adopted these guidelines to serve as their regulatory standards for wireless radiation exposure from cell phones, Wi-Fi, and other wireless devices.

ICNIRP has 14 members on the commission. ICNIRP recently announced that is calling for nominations to serve on the Commission from 2016 to 2020. To be eligible for membership, one must be nominated by the Executive Council of the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) or an IRPA Associate Society.

IRPA, the international professional society for radiological protection, was created by health physicists with expertise in ionizing radiation. The Executive Council consists of 12 members including seven physicists, two engineers, a nuclear technologist, a biochemist, and an M.D. biologist. Their expertise and the primary focus of their association has been on protection from ionizing radiation. So it is reasonable to question why the eligibility criteria for ICNIRP membership requires that ICNIRP members be nominated by IRPA or its affiliates since ICNIRP’s domain is non-ionizing radiation protection.

Do the selection criteria for ICNIRP membership explain why ICNIRP has not adopted biologically-based guidelines to protect people from non-ionizing radiation?

ICNIRP should be composed of members who possess a comprehensive and deep understanding of the scientific literature regarding chronic, low intensity exposure to non-ionizing radiation and biology or health. In addition, these experts should be unbiased and should not have even the appearance of a conflict of interest.

Recently, 206 scientists signed the International EMF Scientist Appeal, a petition which claims that "the ICNIRP guidelines do not cover long-term exposure and low-intensity effects" and "they are insufficient to protect public health."  All of these scientists have published peer-reviewed research on non-ionizing radiation protection.
"The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) established in 1998 the “Guidelines For Limiting Exposure To Time-Varying Electric, Magnetic, and Electromagnetic Fields (up to 300 GHz)”[1]." These guidelines are accepted by the WHO and numerous countries around the world. The WHO is calling for all nations to adopt the ICNIRP guidelines to encourage international harmonization of standards. In 2009, the ICNIRP released a statement saying that it was reaffirming its 1998 guidelines, as in their opinion, the scientific literature published since that time “has provided no evidence of any adverse effects below the basic restrictions and does not necessitate an immediate revision of its guidance on limiting exposure to high frequency electromagnetic fields."http://emfscientist.org/index.php/emf-scientist-appeal

Perhaps, it is time for the WHO to replace ICNIRP with an expert committee that has greater expertise regarding non-ionizing radiation protection and use this committee to establish the WHO guidelines for wireless radiation.

Joel M. Moskowitz, Ph.D. submitted the International EMF Scientist Appeal along with the Press Release and a description of the Appeal to the Federal Communications Commission in response to an FCC request for input regarding its radio frequency radiation regulations which were adopted in 1996 (Proceeding Number 13-84).

These three documents can be downloaded from FCC web site at http://bit.ly/FCCappeal.

June 4, 2015 Update

The "International EMF Scientist Appeal" has generated more than 48 news stories in 26 nations written in 21 different languages attesting to the global reach of this petition.

May 16, 2015 Update

On Monday, May 11th, 190 scientists from 39 nations submitted an appeal to the United Nations, the UN member states, and the World Health Organization (WHO) requesting they adopt more protective exposure guidelines for electromagnetic fields (EMF) and wireless technology* in the face of increasing evidence of risk. These exposures are a rapidly growing form of environmental pollution worldwide.

*(e.g., cell phones, cordless phones, Wi-Fi, wireless devices, cell towers, wireless utility meters).

The “International EMF Scientist Appeal” asks the Secretary General, UN affiliated bodies and all member nations to encourage precautionary measures, to limit EMF exposures, and to educate the public about health risks, particularly to children and pregnant women.

To date, the petition has been signed by 200 EMF scientists from 40 countries -- each has published peer-reviewed research on non-ionizing EMF and biology or health -- about 2,000 scientific papers in all.

The EMFscientist.org web site launched last Monday has been visited by people in 119 countries attesting to the global reach of this emerging public health crisis. The site contains information about this "wake up call" from the scientific community including a 3-minute video announcing the Appeal by Dr. Martin Blank, a past president of the International Bioelectromagnetics Society who has had over 30 years of experience conducting EMF research at Columbia University.

The International EMF Alliance has begun to collect endorsements of the Appeal from non-governnmental (i.e., non-profit) organizations around the world.]

PRESS RELEASE

International Scientists Appeal to U.N. to Protect Humans and Wildlife from Electromagnetic Fields and Wireless Technology

WHO’s conflicting stance on risk needs strengthening, says 190 scientists

New York, NY, May 11, 2015. Today 190 scientists from 39 nations submitted an appeal to the United Nations, UN member states and the World Health Organization (WHO) requesting they adopt more protective exposure guidelines for electromagnetic fields (EMF) and wireless technology in the face of increasing evidence of risk. These exposures are a rapidly growing form of environmental pollution worldwide.

The “International EMF Scientist Appeal” asks the Secretary General and UN affiliated bodies to encourage precautionary measures, to limit EMF exposures, and to educate the public about health risks, particularly to children and pregnant women.

The Appeal highlights WHO’s conflicting positions about EMF risk. WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer classified Radiofrequency radiation as a Group 2B “Possible Carcinogen” in 2011, and Extremely Low Frequency fields in 2001.  Nonetheless, WHO continues to ignore its own agency’s recommendations and favors guidelines recommended by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). These guidelines, developed by a self-selected group of industry insiders, have long been criticized as non-protective.

The Appeal calls on the UN to strengthen its advisories on EMF risk for humans and to assess the potential impact on wildlife and other living organisms under the auspices of the UN Environmental Programme, in line with the science demonstrating risk, thereby resolving this inconsistency.

Martin Blank, PhD, of Columbia University, says,

"International exposure guidelines for electromagnetic fields must be strengthened to reflect the reality of their impact on our bodies, especially on our DNA. The time to deal with the harmful biological and health effects is long overdue. We must reduce exposure by establishing more protective guidelines.”

Joel Moskowitz, PhD, of University of California, Berkeley, says,

“ICNIRP guidelines set exposure standards for high-intensity, short-term, tissue-heating thresholds. These do not protect us from the low-intensity, chronic exposures common today. Scientists signing the Appeal request that the UN and member nations protect the global human population and wildlife from EMF exposures.”

Sydney unplugged: Cafes force punters to power down

Sydney unplugged: Cafes force punters to power down

The love affair between coffee shops and laptop-wielding customers may be dying out as coffee shop owners revolt against Sydneysiders' demand to be wired up.
Wi-Fi backlash is a trend accelerating among coffee shops, bars and restaurants, where a failure to see the benefits of Wi-Fi-induced turnover is encouraging many owners to restrict Wi-Fi or ban it.

Hemingway's Manly manager Theo Gibson said unlimited free Wi-Fi was robbing the oceanside bar and daytime coffee shop of its social vibe.

"We changed hands nine months ago and we've gone from offering unlimited free Wi-Fi to only offering about 30 minutes for free.

"The change was immediate. People interacted more, they started to listen and talk to each other properly and weren't constantly distracted by a screen," he said.

Theo Gibson serves Nigel Rowden and Rachel Long at Hemingway's Manly, which recently limited the amount of free Wi-Fi given to customers.

"We wanted to foster an atmosphere of conversation."

Rather than seeing customer numbers dwindle, Mr Gibson noticed a spike in popularity after Hemingway's changed its Wi-Fi policy.

"We didn't want to be a soulless Wi-Fi hub. We wanted our coffee and bar culture to be about social interaction and fun," he said.

"Dining out shouldn't be about spending hours online. It's about conversation, eating and drinking with friends."

Hemingway's Manly is among a growing number of coffee shops, bars and restaurants forcing punters to power down.

Bay Ten Espresso, a warehouse-styled cafe and coffee shop in Lavender Bay's Middlemiss Street will offer Wi-Fi only upon request.

But expect to be shot a cold look over your hot coffee if you and your laptop overstay your welcome.

"We can get people coming in for two to three hours at a time," manager Nathan Devlin said.

"They sit at a four-person table and they've only bought a small cup of coffee. That's money that isn't going into my pocket, and customers aren't able to get through the door to have lunch," he said.

"I don't like going up to someone and asking them to switch off and move, but we are a cafe where people come to eat, drink and socialise, not an internet cafe.

"You do get the odd person who shoots you a cold look or huffs and puffs about not being able to use Wi-Fi all day long."

While independent cafes are hitting back at serial screen starers, McDonald's has no plans to backtrack on unlimited access to free Wi-Fi.

"If anything, we are looking to further improve the service and increase its speed," a spokeswoman for the fast-food giant said.

However, decisions made by the corporate bigwigs of Sydney's biggest cafe chains does not necessarily translate to good practice on the cafe floor.

Monica Hanna, supervisor at Gloria Jean's in George Street in Sydney's CBD, said if it wasn't for a fear of being rude, she would very much like to tell laptop-wielding Wi-Fi campers to move on.

"We often see customers come in, take up a four- or five-person space and buy the cheapest item on the menu," she said.

"They then set up their laptop and enjoy a few hours of free Wi-Fi.

"Sometimes the Wi-Fi is so overused we can't access the internet on our staff computers."
It seems Sydney's Wi-Fi campers are privy to sitting where they want and for as long as they want without spending much at all.

"It annoys me some people feel they are entitled to use our cafe as their personal internet space," Ms Hanna said.

"I would feel rude saying anything but, being right near to Capitol Theatre, we go through very busy periods, and we need the tables for the families and groups that come in for lunch, tea or coffee."

Pediatric autism specialist calls for smart meter moratorium

Pediatric autism specialist calls for smart meter moratorium

I am Toril Jelter, a board certified pediatrician specializing in medical and environmental aspects of autism related illness. I have health concerns regarding the unbridled roll out of wireless technologies without adequate health studies before hand.
Dear FDA/FCC, I request a moratorium on the Smart Meter roll out ASAP until a proper assessment of health effects has been conducted. Here are a few patient stories for your review: A 2 year old child can’t sleep at night. He screams inconsolably for hours. When the mother takes the child away from the SF Bay area to a remote area with poor cell phone reception the child sleeps well every night and naps as a normal 2 year old would during the day. A 40 year old man with MS & EHS (multiple sclerosis and electrohypersensitivity) requests no Smart Meter. His doctor writes a letter to support this request. It is granted BUT only temporarily! His 4 neighbors get a Smart Meter and he develops such severe ringing in the ears (tinnitus) that he is no longer able to sleep indoors. He discovers that the only way he can sleep is to sleep outdoors. (This could be explained by the cumulative effect of EMF in his home + the Smart Meters next door.) A 45 year old woman with MS has been stable for several years. After installment of a Smart Meter she goes down hill rapidly. Depression,flu-like symptoms and severe fatigue. Another woman with MS 50 years old improving. Gets a Smart Meter. Gets worse balance, worsening depression. Falls breaks 2 ribs and punctures a lung. A 10 year old child with high functioning autism gets a Smart Meter. His handwriting deteriorates. He seems more fatigued. He gets flu like symptoms frequently. Looses his appetite. Stops gaining weight. A 65 year old woman gets a Smart Meter, actually 4 at the head of her bed. (condo)She develops severe tinnitus, sleep disturbance, intermittent confusion, memory problems, heart palpitations and diabetes.

On July 20 Spain will have a more powerful 4G

-The main national operators can take advantage of 4G in the 800MHz band
-This band provides greater penetration in buildings to use 4G at full speed
-Operators and the Ministry of Industry expect some interference problems with digital terrestrial television, and to do  create a website (llega800.es) to coordinate it.

EMF Updates from John Weigel: July 19th, 2015

EMF Updates from John Weigel

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The following article from the Liffey Champion newspaper in Ireland is a prime example of  the value of educating neighbours, friends and elected officials about the dangers of electromagnetic radiation from cell phone towers, etc.

Our gratitude and congratulations to the members of the Kildare Co. Council which calls for implementation of the Precautionary Principle. The action of the council is precedent-setting. The downside is that the former owner of the property, the national Electricity Supply Board is taking the fight to the national planning authority. Thus, the will of the people and their elected officials can still be undermined. A thank you to the Liffey Champion for publishing the article. The site adjoining the  mast has reportedly been acquired by the council for a health centre.

Maria del Mar Rosa has forwarded information conflicts of interest within the International Commission on Non-ionizing Radiation (ICNIRP). The confusion (some say it is deliberate) regarding radiation exposure standards is underscored by the request by more than 200 scientists to the World Health Organization / U.N. to establish standards. The scientific debate is further muddied by the failure of the 5th Paris Appeal to produce a transparent account of the group's conference on electromagnetism and multiple chemical allergies. This group, too, appears to be leaning to appealing to the U.N.
Appeals to the U.N., of course, circumvent the responsibilities of individual countries and is yet another push for a form of international global governance.

The interconnectedness of electromagnetic radiation-caused illness and U.N. Agenda 21 which calls for rural depopulation comes into focus by the failure of the Irish government to provide general practitioner care in some rural areas for as long as two years and the introduction of hi-tech telemedicine.

Stay well... for as long as you can,

John Weigel
