Magog waits to find out if it can ban Hydro's smart meters

Time is quickly running out for Quebecers who want to opt out of Hydro's smart meter program at a reduced rate.
As of Tuesday, the installation price for a manual meter goes up from 15 to 85 dollars, along with a monthly charge of 5 dollars to read the meter.
The Town of Magog in the Townships meantime, is advising its residents to turn their back on the new technology.
Mayor Vicki May Hamm says the town is seeking legal advice to see if it can ban the devices on its territory.
"We're not convinced that there's not any health problems." says Hamm
Hydro says smart meters are perfectly safe and have already been installed in 2.5 million homes across the province.

Uh-oh. Not another diatribe about the dangers of our modern communication systems? Obviously, these devices and the resulting fields are extremely (and increasingly) common in modern society. Even if we want to, we can’t eliminate our exposure, or our children’s, to RF/EMF. But, we may need to limit that exposure, when possible.

That was among the conclusions of a report published in the Journal of Microscopy and Ultrastructure entitled “Why children absorb more microwave radiation than adults: The consequences.” From an analysis of peer-reviewed studies, the authors argue that children and adolescents are at considerable risk from devices that radiate microwaves (and that adults are at a lower, but still significant, risk). Abstract


Glutamate is an excitatory neurotransmitter that is released by the majority of central nervous system synapses and is involved in developmental processes, cognitive functions, learning and memory. Excessive elevated concentrations of Glu in synaptic cleft results in neural cell apoptosis which is called excitotoxicity causing neurodegenerative diseases. Hence, we investigated the possibility of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) as a risk factor which is able to change Glu concentration in synaptic clef. 

Synaptosomes as a model of nervous terminal were exposed to ELF-EMF for 15-55 min in flux intensity range from 0.1 to 2 mT and frequency range from 50 to 230 Hz. Finally, all raw data by INForm v4.02 software as an artificial neural network program was analyzed to predict the effect of whole mentioned range spectra. 

The results showed the tolerance of all effects between the ranges from -35 to +40 % compared to normal state when glutamatergic systems exposed to ELF-EMF. It indicates that glutamatergic system attempts to compensate environmental changes though release or reuptake in order to keep the system safe. 

Regarding the wide range of ELF-EMF acquired in this study, the obtained outcomes have potential for developing treatments based on ELF-EMF for some neurological diseases; however, in vivo experiments on the cross linking responses between glutamatergic and cholinergic systems in the presence of ELF-EMF would be needed.

  • Children absorb a greater amount of microwave radiation than adults.
  • Fetuses are even more vulnerable than children.  Therefore pregnant women should avoid exposing their fetus to microwave radiation.
  • Adolescent girls and women should not place cellphones in their bras or in hijabs (headscarf).
  • Cellphone manual warnings make clear an overexposure problem exists.
  • Government warnings have been issued but most of the public are unaware of such warnings.
  • Current exposure limits are inadequate and should be revised.
  • Wireless devices are radio transmitters, not toys.  Selling toys that use them should be monitored more closely, or possibly even banned.
Children and fetuses absorb more microwave radiation, according to the authors, because their bodies are relatively smaller, their skulls are thinner, and their brain tissue is more absorbent.

More generally, the studies cited in the paper found RF/EMF exposure is linked to cancers of the brain and salivary glands, ADHD, low sperm count, and, among girls who keep cell phones in their bra, breast cancer.  They also noted that the average time between exposure to a carcinogen and a resultant tumor is three or more decades.

Hopefully, more longitudinal studies will be done to verify or contradict the findings so far.  In the meantime, are the government’s current regulations adequate?  The exposure levels they warn against haven’t seem to have been updated for more than 19 years.

In a Network World opinion article ominously titled “Is Wi-Fi killing us…slowly?” columnist Mark Gibbs makes the point that “… laws and warnings are all very well but it’s pretty much certain that all restrictions on products that use microwave technology will err on the safe side; that is, the side that’s safe for industry, not the side of what’s safe for society.”  Gibbs then added this ominous closing question, “Will we look back (sadly) in fifty or a hundred years and marvel at how Wi-Fi and cellphones were responsible for the biggest health crisis in human history?”

But, short of that worst-case scenario, the topic certainly merits more scrutiny, and perhaps some common sense limits on what devices our children use, and for how long.

Is Wi-Fi killing us...slowly?

What would it take to get you to not use Wi-Fi? I don’t mean simply not connecting to it; I mean not having Wi-Fi switched on. At all. And what about cellphones? I know that the issue of cellphone safety has come and gone and most authorities have dismissed the risks as negligible. But what if the risks to you are trivial, but not to your children? Would you stop using these devices? I ask because an academic paper has recently been published that concludes that electromagnetic radiation generated by humans is far more dangerous to children and babies than we think.

Now, human-generated EMR in the general environment was negligible at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, but by 1933 the problem of electromagnetic interference was becoming significant. In that year, the International Electrotechnical Commission in Paris “recommended the International Special Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR) be set up to deal with the emerging problem of EMI.” (Wikipedia)

Since then, despite much legislation and regulation, the general EMR background has increased significantly in the Western hemisphere and even more dramatically in suburban and urban areas, with radio and television being among the greatest contributors. That said, the general suburban and urban EMR levels are to the order of few tens of µW/m² which has been thought to be a harmless level of exposure.

For example, according to Kenneth R. Foster, Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania, wrote:
In 2006 I conducted an industry-supported survey of RF field levels in urban and suburban areas in four countries—the United States, France, Germany, and Sweden (Foster 2007). The survey made 356 measurements of background RF signals at 55 sites: private residences, commercial spaces, health care and educational institutions, and other public spaces. Measurements were conducted in public spaces as close as practical to access points. 
The results, which are detailed in "Radiofrequency Exposure From Wireless LANs" (Foster 2007), show that in all cases the measured Wi-Fi signal levels were very far below international safety limits, specifically, those of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the International Commission on Nonionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP 2002). These limits were designed to protect against all known hazards of RF energy. In nearly all cases, these signals were also considerably lower than those from other nearby sources of RF energy, including cellular telephone base stations. 
The EMR we’re talking about for cellphones and Wi-Fi is in the microwave range between 300 MHz and 300 GHz (1m to 1mm) and the argument as to the lack of risk from exposure is based on the argument that:
“Microwaves do not contain sufficient energy to chemically change substances by ionization, and so are an example of non-ionizing radiation … It has not been shown conclusively that microwaves (or other non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation) have significant adverse biological effects at low levels. Some, but not all, studies suggest that long-term exposure may have a carcinogenic effect.” (Wikipedia)
Well, that last sentence is addressed by the paper, Why children absorb more microwave radiation than adults: The consequences, published in June this year. The authors, L. Lloyd Morgan, Santosh Kesari, and Devra Lee Davis summarize how they used computers simulation based on MRI scans of children to model microwave absorption and found:  
Children absorb more MWR than adults because their brain tissues are more absorbent, their skulls are thinner and their relative size is smaller. MWR from wireless devices has been declared a possible human carcinogen. Children are at greater risk than adults when exposed to any carcinogen. 
The problem is that the consequences of exposure are anything but immediate:
Because the average latency time between first exposure and diagnosis of a tumor can be decades, tumors induced in children may not be diagnosed until well into adulthood. The fetus is particularly vulnerable to MWR. MWR exposure can result in degeneration of the protective myelin sheath that surrounds brain neurons. 
And, of course, the explosion of radio-controlled toys has an effect:
MWR-emitting toys are being sold for use by young infants and toddlers. Digital dementia has been reported in school age children. A case study has shown when cellphones are placed in teenage girls’ bras multiple primary breast cancer develop beneath where the phones are placed. 
So, what are we going to do? Here’s some compelling evidence that MWR presents a real risk, yet we currently live in a society flooded with microwave radio signals and that situation is only going to become even more pronounced. The paper points out that:
MWR exposure limits have remained unchanged for 19 years. All manufacturers of smartphones have warnings which describe the minimum distance at which phone must be kept away from users in order to not exceed the present legal limits for exposure to MWR. The exposure limit for laptop computers and tablets is set when devices are tested 20 cm away from the body. Belgium, France, India and other technologically sophisticated governments are passing laws and/or issuing warnings about children's use of wireless devices.
Laws and warnings are all very well but it’s pretty much certain that all restrictions on products that use microwave technology will err on the safe side; that is, the side that’s safe for industry, not the side of what's safe for society.

Obama coming to Cedar Falls on Wednesday

President Barack Obama is coming back to Iowa to pitch ideas for expanding Internet access.
On Wednesday, Obama will fly in to give a speech proposing new steps to increase access to affordable, high-speed broadband across the country, a White House official told The Des Moines Register on Saturday morning.
"Further details on the president's travel to Iowa will be available in the coming days," the official said.
Sources told the Register that Cedar Falls Utilities will host the event at 2 p.m.
Cedar Falls is Iowa's first gigabit city, which means the highest-speed broadband fiber with capacity of up to 1 gigabit per second is installed directly to its homes and businesses. It's the gold standard of Internet communications.
Broadband is also one of Republican Gov. Terry Branstad's top initiatives for the upcoming session of the Iowa Legislature, although a proposal he backed failed to pass in the statehouse last year. Obama's visit will fall a day after Branstad formally unveils his revamped "Connect Every Acre" plan, which would offer incentives aimed at ensuring Iowa farmers have mobile broadband access in fields where they run increasingly high-tech agricultural machinery.
Branstad spokesman Jimmy Centers said in a statement Saturday: "We appreciate that President Obama recognizes Governor Branstad's work to make Iowa a leader in connecting its citizens, main street businesses, schools and agriculture to high-speed broadband internet. In this legislative session, the governor will continue to aggressively pursue legislation that positions Iowa for the future by connecting every acre of the state through high-speed broadband internet."
Two-thirds of rural Iowans, or 66 percent, subscribe to broadband service at home, below the average of 75 percent of Iowans in cities and suburbs, according to a state report issued in 2013. In addition, only about 40 percent of rural Iowans subscribe to mobile broadband service through a cellphone or mobile device, compared with 53 percent for urban and suburban Iowans.
A lack of quality, affordable broadband service in parts of rural Iowa hurts efforts by communities to attract economic development and to improve access to education, health care and social services, state officials have said.
Planning in Cedar Falls for the president's arrival has been underway for at least a couple of days. Hotel rooms were booked for advance staff and Secret Service, and meetings have been held with law enforcement, firefighters and public works staff, city officials told the Register.
Obama hasn't been in Iowa since 2012. He wrapped up his re-election campaign with a rally in downtown Des Moines the night before the vote. Iowa has been a crucial factor in three of the president's victories: Democrats gave him the No. 1 slot in the presidential caucuses in 2008; he trounced Republican John McCain in Iowa in that year's general election by 10 points; and he beat rival Mitt Romney by 6 points here in 2012.
Obama was last in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area in August 2012, when he held a campaign event in downtown Waterloo. Beforehand, he popped in at the Pump Haus in Cedar Falls for a Bud Light and an impromptu half-hour chat with bar patrons.
In the wake of the November 2014 elections, when the GOP seized control of both the U.S. House and Senate, Obama has been dropping in on states around the country to make pitches for his proposals, several of which will also be featured in his Jan. 20 State of the Union address. He was in Tennessee on Friday to talk about a proposal called "America's College Promise," which would provide two years of taxpayer-funded education at a community college free for students who earn at least a 2.5 grade point average and stay on track to graduate. The idea is to make college as universal as high school, and to let students earn the first half of a bachelor's degree and skills needed for the workforce, the White House said. A full-time student could save an average of $3,800 in tuition per year.
On Thursday, Obama was in Arizona to push for plans to lower some mortgage insurance premiums, which he said would save homeowners $900 a year and attract 250,000 first-time buyers. The Federal Housing Administration will reduce annual mortgage insurance premiums by 0.5 percentage points, from 1.35 percent to 0.85 percent. It would mean a healthier housing market, he said.
This week, in addition to broadband access, Obama will focus on cyberspace issues such as identity theft and electronic privacy.

'Tech neck' wrinkles are a symptom of heavy smartphone and tablet use

Dermatologists are blaming smartphones and tablets for causing sagging skin and wrinklesin younger generations, including a wrinkling condition dubbed "tech neck".

The latest ailment to result from modern technology can be found mostly in people aged 18 to 39 who own an average of three devices.

Tech neck refers to a specific crease just above the collar bone that is caused by repeated bending of the neck to look at the screen of a portable device.

"The problem of wrinkles and sagging of the jowls and neck used to begin in late middle age but, in the last 10 years, because of 'tech neck', it has become a problem for a generation of younger women," said Dr Christopher Rowland Payne, a consultant dermatologist at The London Clinic.

"Neck skin is exposed to sun every day because of low neckline, especially in women, but people are less inclined to think of protecting their necks than their faces.

"This is bad news for neck skin as it starts off finer and sun thins it further. Finer skin wrinkles more readily and the fat of the neck may sag."

The research was commissioned by Yves St Laurent and has been published at the same time as the cosmetics giant releases a face and neck cream to remedy the condition. YSL claims the product improves skin firmness by 13% in a single application.

Tech-related health problems

Cell phones have long been associated with various health conditions and even some serious illnesses.

Research conducted by the Swedish Hardell group found that mobile phone use has been linked to specific types of brain tumour, while a recent study published in Surgery Technology International found that heavy use causes back problems.

"As the head tilts forward the forces seen by the neck surges to 27 pounds at 15 degrees, 40 pounds at 30 degrees, 49 pounds at 45 degrees and 60 pounds at 60 degrees," said Kenneth Hansraj, a back surgeon and author of the study.

Hansraj warned that chronic screen-staring could "deteriorate the back and neck muscles to the point of needing surgery".

The latest tech-neck malady is believed to have come about in the last 10 years directly as a result of the rise of mobile phones.

The first ever cream specifically designed to combat a smartphone-related condition does not come cheaply, setting consumers back £65.

"Many women I treat accept their wrinkles and fine lines but what they cannot accept is their new facial expressions," said dermatologist Dr Thierry Michaud, who works on the YSL Skin Science team.
