Are mobiles making us obnoxious? Under 25s more likely to show off, have inflated self-esteem and exaggerate thanks to social media

  • 74% of 16-24 year olds need to have their mobile with them at all times
  • Almost a third exaggerate in status updates - and women are more likely to
  • 68% have used social networks to check ex-partner's updates
  • 75% believe that social media can ruin relationships

It seems that mobile use has completely changed the boundaries of social acceptability and could well be ruining our relationships.

According to the latest research, we are a nation of tech addicts - a staggering 74 per cent of 16-24 year olds need to have their mobile phones with them at all times.
The study, which looks at the impact of digital disruption to both society and human psychology, shows that young people don’t behave or think in the same way as they did ten years ago.

They don’t just use their mobile phones to call friends and family, they rely on them obsessively, feeling anxious when they’re away from them.

Social media is also encouraging narcissism among youngsters with half of respondents admitting to posting something with the intention of getting a specific reaction from friends.

Today's youth are also more likely to show off, try to provoke a reaction, and even lie on social media.

Almost a third admit to sometimes exaggerating in their status updates - and it's women who are more likely to do so.

Ignorant? The study also found that 79 per cent think it's acceptable to use their mobile phones on the toilet and 81 per cent agree it's OK to use their mobile in quiet zones like on a train or in a library

The study also reveals that 68 per cent have used social networks to check the social profiles of an ex-partner and 75 per cent actually believe that social media can ruin relationships.

The results also show that mobile use has completely changed the boundaries of social acceptability - almost two-thirds said they will check their phone when out with friends or colleagues if there is a lull in the conversation.

On top of this, 79 per cent think it's acceptable to use their mobile phones on the toilet and 81 per cent agree it's OK to use their mobile in quiet zones like on a train or in a library.
Obsessed: Younger Brits don't just use their mobile phones to call friends and family, they rely on them obsessively, feeling anxious when they’re away from them and even using them around friends and family

It is also affecting our attitude in the workplace - 29 per cent agree that is it acceptable to use their mobile phone in a work meeting.

A spokesperson for Havas Media, who carried out the study, said: 'Over the last ten years the impact of mobile phones and social media has changed the human psyche dramatically. And because of this, marketing should be changing too.

'It's the brands who understand the complexities of this new narcissistic, spontaneous and mobile-dependent consumer that will stand out amongst the noise.'

6 Reasons Not To Buy Smartphone: Smart Phones Can Be Deadly

6 Reasons Not To Buy Smartphone

    Smart Phones Can Be Deadly
    Smartphones can be deadly
Beyond possibly killing the planet slowly with radiation and radio waves, your smartphone could actually be an actor in your own untimely demise.
Studies have shown that mobile phones impact the behavior of bees and could be contributing to the worldwide decline of bee populations. If one of the main pollinators ceases to exist, the world's food supply will plummet. Honey bees pollinate about $15 billion worth of crops in the U.S. annually, including some of the most common fruits and vegetables such as apples, oranges, blueberries, cherries, broccoli and carrots, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.
And humans, as the main users of cellphones, are also potentially at risk of any number of ills, from reduced sperm count to brain tumors. In 2011, scientists from the World Health Organization declared that mobile phones are potentially carcinogenic.
All that aside, texting while walking or driving could pose the most immediate threat to your health and well-being, or that of others. One study released in January 2014 by researchers at Australia's University of Queensland found that texting and walking really isn't as easy as it would seem.
The researchers concluded that those who text or read on their phones and walk aren't as likely to be aware of their surroundings and are less likely to keep their balance or walk in a straight line.
While smartphones are great, they do come with some responsibilities and risks.

Cell biology and EMF safety standards.

2014 Aug 25:1-3. [Epub ahead of print]

Cell biology and EMF safety standards.

    Abstract

Abstract Living cells react defensively and start to synthesize stress proteins when exposed to potentially harmful stimuli. Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are among the many different environmental stimuli that initiate stress protein synthesis. Although there is greater energy transfer and heating due to EMF at higher frequencies, there is no greater stress response. The cellular stress response is far more sensitive to EMF than to an increase in temperature. It should be obvious that an EMF safety standard should be based on the more sensitive, natural biological response.

    Summary:
Word Heath Organisation (WHO) outlined in 2005 recommendations, how to treat people suffering from the functional impairment electrohypersensitivity in its document ''Electromagnetic fields and public health''. Unfortunately the reduction of electromagnetic fields was not considered as a treatment option. The aim of the current study was to shield the computer user from the emitted electromagnetic irradiation and fields and to correlate that to the subjective symptoms reported by electrohypersensitive volunteers. The irradiation of the shielding cabinets was recorded. They housed either separate computer screens or whole laptops. When the volunteers had used the shielding cabinet for 1-7 years, they were able work with their computers whole working day, Those who had used the shielding cabined for 2-3 months were partially symptom free. The person who had used the cabinet only for 1 week reported some alleviation of her nausea. In conclusion: it seems that reducing the electromagnetic irradiation of the computer can lessen the symptoms of electrohypersensitivity and permit working without problems. Further studies are needed to clarify how the symptoms of different organ systems recover and make computer users to work also professionally.
