(NaturalNews) Depression in adolescents appears to be a serious and growing problem in this country, but is mental health screening the answer? Or does the appropriation of a label merely serve to drop a possibly troubled kid into psychiatry's default position of "let's fix this problem with a pill"?
Mental health screening of adolescents was conceived under the guise of a program, first launched during the Bush administration, called "TeenScreen." This program has now found itself a home in approximately 600 locations across the U.S., including school health classes, school-based health clinics and community agencies.
According to a recent report released by the CDC, 1 in 25 adolescents (aged 12 to 17) are now prescribed drugs for depression. There is every reason to suspect this number is increasing under TeenScreen, and that it will continue to rise.
Mental health screening's very foundation is deeply flawed
The goal of TeenScreen is to screen every school-aged child before graduation for "suicide" and "mental disorders" using a computer survey. Those considered "at risk" are then recommended for treatment. The label placed on your child is one that could stick with him or her for life regardless of its validity.It should not surprise us to learn that the money line for funding of this ill-conceived program can be traced directly to the pharmaceutical drug industry. Members of the industry also assisted in the development of the questionnaire our young people are asked to fill out.
Based on the answers the child gives, he or she is then sent on to a "clinician" who considers which label to attach to the child, such as conduct disorder, avoidant personality disorder, mathematics disorder, reading disorder, disorder of written expression, nightmare disorder, general anxiety disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, factious disorder, as well as numerous other "disorders."
According to critics of this process, there can be an 84 to 94% chance the student will walk away being falsely labeled as "suicidal" or "mentally ill," something TeenScreen fails to disclose. However, because the real agenda simply appears to be more "pill pushing," a false positive carries not just a false label, but with it a prescription for a drug carrying a black box warning of increased risk of suicide!
No individual behind the development of TeenScreen has come forward with evidence to demonstrate that the "assessment" made of these students is even the least bit effective. Thus far, the statistics show one-third of the subjects being flagged as "positive" for having mental health problems; and 50% of those so flagged were recommended for mental health treatment. If this system, which already appears to be woefully inaccurate, is set loose on the more than 50 million public school students in the U.S., it would mean affixing a label to more than 17 million American children and putting 8 million-plus into the hands of the psychiatric/drug industry.
For decades we placed a great deal of emphasis on teaching our children to "just say no to drugs" only to turn around now and officially welcome the pharmaceutical drug industry back into their lives, giving full access to the kids and the frightening ability to assign false labels to millions of them. Parental rights, of course, remain ambiguous at best under TeenScreen guidelines; and with each decision that is removed from the parents' control, it is a decision we may never get back.

Abstract
Exposure to
electromagnetic fields (EMF) is ubiquitous for almost all individuals living in
industrialized countries. Epidemiological and laboratory studies suggest that
exposure to Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) EMF increase cancer risk. The immune
system functions as one of the body's main protective mechanisms, and Natural
Killer (NK) cells are a subset of lymphocytes that can destroy several types of
tumor cells. In this study, we investigated, NK cell activity after exposure to
a 50 Hertz (Hz), 2 mT magnetic field generated by a Helmholtz Coil. Nineteen
male, 10-12 week old guinea pigs were used, and NK cytotoxic activity of
splenocytes was measured in vitro by natural anticandidial colorimetric index.
The Mann-Whitney U test was applied for statistical analysis. NK cell cytotoxic
activity was decreased in exposed compared to controls. Our data suggests that
part of the immune system, the NK cell, can be suppressed by a 50 Hz magnetic
field.

Cell towers killing sparrows, bees, says MoEF study

An environment and forests' ministry study has blamed
electromagnetic
radiation (EMR) from communication towers for the
declining
numbers of sparrows and
bees. The study titled 'A possible
impact
of communication tower on wildlife birds and bees' said the
radiation
decreases egg production in the bees.
A
10-member expert panel headed by Bombay Natural
History Society
director
Dr Asad Rahmani was asked to study the radiation impact after
the
issue was raised in the Lok Sabha in August last year. "We have
suggested
that EMR should be recognized as a pollutant given its effect
on
wildlife and should be audited regularly," said Wildlife Institute
of
India's
Dr B C Choudhary, who was part of the panel.
The
experts noted a Punjab University's study that said embryos of 50
ggs
of house sparrows were damaged after being exposed to mobile
tower
radiation for five to 30 minutes. Sparrows exposed to the
radiation
suffered from reproductive and co-ordination problems.
They
also became aggressive.
In
the case of honey bees, the group observed that high radiation
resulted
in an unusual phenomenon known as 'colony collapse
disorder'
which is characterized by sudden disappearance of a hive's
inhabitants,
leaving only queens, eggs and a few immature workers
behind.
The vanished bees were never found. Also, the navigational
skills
of the bees were affected by high-tension lines.
The
panel also took note of a recent study that showed that the worker
bees
stopped coming to the hives after 10 days and egg production in
queen bees dropped
drastically to 100 eggs per day compared to 350
eggs
when a mobile phone with frequency of 900 MHz was kept for
10
minutes in the beehives.

1. Papageorgiou and colleagues published in the Journal of Integrative Neuroscience in June 2011 that Wi-Fi signals decrease a measure of attention in young men whilst using their working memory. Working memory is keeping information readily available in the brain, to be used whilst carrying out a task. It is used in activities such as problem solving, decision making, planning, reasoning and monitoring.
The group measured electrical activity on the surface of the brain of young men and women in their early 20s whilst performing a task designed to stimulate working memory. They used a version of the Hayling Sentence Completion test. At a set point after hearing the sentence, a peak voltage was recorded on the scalp, called the P300 (part of an event- related potential). P300 amplitude is thought to be an index of mental activity and attention. The amplitude of the P300 peaks were greatly decreased in the young men and slightly increased in the young women when a Wi-Fi access point, positioned 1.5m away, was switched on. In the presence of a Wi-Fi signal the men’s p300s were significantly lower than the women’s. Exposures were carried out blind, meaning that the participants did not know whether the Wi-Fi was on or not. Microwave electrical fields were 0.49V/m at head position (2.4GHz), well within the range of exposures experienced by someone using a Wi- Fi-enabled device such as a wireless laptop or tablet computer.

Two new studies1, 2 have found that electromagnetic fields from Wi-Fi transmitters can alter electrical brain activity and decrease a measure of attention in young adults when performing a memory task. These are the first reports to look at the effects of Wi-Fi on brain function.
Previously, changes in learning and memory, reaction times and altered EEG brain activity have been associated with exposures to mobile phones and other microwave electromagnetic fields. These new results show that Wi-Fi can also have a detrimental effect on attention and mental activity, as well as potentially affecting brain development in children and young people (which is dependent upon electrical brain activity).
The attractiveness of Wi-Fi as a learning tool in schools is significantly decreased if it could be damaging the cognitive abilities and brain development of pupils.2. Maganioti and colleagues (2010) found that Wi-Fi signals significantly decreased EEG electrical activity (alpha and beta frequencies) in cortical brain areas of young women whilst they were performing a short memory task (Wechslet test). EEG signals, measured with electrodes on the scalp, contain a range of activity frequencies which are divided into the bands delta (0-4Hz), theta (5-7Hz), alpha (8-13Hz) and beta (14-30Hz). In the Wechslet test the subjects repeated a series of numbers, either in the same or opposite orders to the ones presented. This study found that the EEG activities of young women were changed, but men were not affected.
Wi-Fi signals were as described in study 1: 1.5m from a Wi-Fi access point; microwave electric fields of 0.49V/m (2.4GHz); carried out under blind conditions, so that the participants were not aware of when the Wi-Fi was switched on or off.
Altering the brain activity of children and young people by the presence of a Wi-Fi signal for prolonged periods of time may affect brain development.

The proposed trade of running back Jerome Harrisonto Philadelphia was voided because Harrison was found to have a brain tumor.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter breaks the news and points out that the failed trade could be a blessing in disguise for Harrison. Without the trade, Harrison wouldn’t have taken a physical that revealed the tumor.
This helps explain how Harrison wasn’t on the injury report last week: The Lions had no idea.
Hopefully Harrison caught this early and can treat it aggressively now. Our thoughts are with Harrison and we wish him good health.
