EMF and CFIDS

Probably the most informative and comprehensive book I have read on the subject of EMR has been B. Blake Levitt's book, Electromagnetic Fields published in 1995, twelve years ago.

Chapter 10, Twentieth Century Maladies, draws strong connections of EMR to a number of Immune System Disorders: Electromagnetic Sensitivity Syndrome; Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome; Gulf War Syndrome, The Military, and Electromagnetic Pulse; AIDS; Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis; Alzheimer's Disease; and Cancer (brain cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, melanoma, and breast cancer). (Autism, ADHD, and other learning disabilities are covered in the chapter on Pregnancy, Children, and Electromagnetic Fields.) In this passage, I will quote the section on CFIDS, of which I personally experienced (or suffered from) and also recovered from - in spite of the fact that the CDC says there is "no cure." http://www.cdc.gov/cfs/cfsbasicfacts.htm

Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS), also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), is a baffling disorder first reported around 1982 after some one hundred cases became known in the Lake Tahoe region of California. Although no one has an exact count, approximately 2 million people may now fit the Center for Disease Control strict criteria for clinical classification and be affected by the disease. In England, it is called myalgic encephalomyelitis; in Japan, low natural killer cell syndrome. In the United States, it has been called Epstein-Barr virus and chronic mononucleosis - and it also goes by the cavalier epithet of "yuppie flu." Similar syndromes may go back hundreds of years.

No one knows whether CFS is caused by a new agent or an old one manifesting in a new way, but one thing has become abundantly clear to clinicians around the world: CFS is not a garden-variety absence of energy or pep that is causing previously healthy, happy people to take to their beds for as much as two years. Sufferers from CFS report the sudden onset of mild flu-like symptoms, which never quite seem to go away but develop instead into a multi-system disorder of differing severity. Its hallmark symptoms is a debilitating fatigue beyond anything the person had heretofore experienced. People with CFS typically say that one day they felt fine and the next day they could hardly pick up their toothbrushes, so profound was the fatigue and muscle weakness. They add that it is not at all like a normal flu, in which the immune system slugs it out with a viral agent for a few days, producing a high fever and the like, after which the sufferer feels drained but better. They describe CFS as more like entering the twilight zone.

Other symptoms, which can come and go for months or years, include low-grade fevers, sore throats, tender or swollen lymph nodes, heart irregularities, an inability to concentrate, mental disorientation, a range of neurological symptoms that can even mimic psychosis, visual and sleep disturbances, abnormal weight changes (either too much or too little), profound muscle pain, and weakness, as well as a return of debilitating fatigue within 24 hours after minimal exercise that in the past was easily tolerated. Depression often accompanies CFS, but in most studies it has been found to result from, rather than precede, the disorder. Environmental illness or a host of allergies and chemical sensitivities often develop within the first year of onset, including in some cases sensitivity to electromagnetic fields.

There are several theories about CFS, the most likely being that it is caused by a retrovirus (a single strand of RNA that must trick the nucleus of a cell into incorporating it into its normal DNA manufacture), which infects the immune system's B cells not unlike th way the AIDS retrovirus infects the T cells. Some think the virus lives mainly in the brain tissue, thereby eluding most tests. Ohters think it is a deep viral infection of the liver, which along with the thymus gland is the seat of the body's immune system.

Although the agent or agents have not yet to be identified, [it's been over twenty years now], researchers know several things about the syndrome. Something causes the immune system of CFS patients to chronically underreact and then severely overreact. Often it seems as if the immune systems of those with CFS is on constant alert. But no one knows whether this occurs before of after CFS sets in. Some viruses in the herpes family have been found at abnormally high elevations in those with CFS, including Epstein-Barr Virus ( a majority of the population has been exposed to this virus and will test positive for it by the adult years). But it is not known whether these abnormal elevations are primary infections or are a manifestation of normally quiescent infections kept in check by a previously healthy immune system that goes haywire when an immune dysfunction sets in. Most researchers suspect the latter, since the Epstein-Barr virus has been around for a long time. It is also widely felt among clinicians who have treated CFS patients that the allergies they develop are not typical ones, but are based in some neurological or immune-system problem.

Unfortunately, some cancers associated with the Epstein-Barr virus are beginning to turn up in the CFS population. Cancers of the pharynx and the back of the nose (called nasaopharyngeal carcinoma), cancer of the salivary glands, thymic carcinoma (a deadly cancer of the thymus gland), and primary intracerebral lymphoma (an immune system cancer of the brain) are being found in higher than expected numbers. The Epstein-Barr Virus has a predilection for the immune system's B cells, and B-cell carcinomas, a kind of lymphoma, are also turning up. B-cell carcinomas differ from other lymphomas such as Hodgkin's in that they have a strong tendency to infect the central nervous system.

Are there connections between CFS and electromagnetic fields? It is likely that EMFs are a co-factor in the disease process, if not the outright initiator. CFS is widespread in the electronics industry in California's Silicon Valley and along Boston's Route 128 corridor. It affects woman far more often than men. (Among the highest number of sufferers are computer operators, who typically are women sitting for hours in fields that directly impact on the thymus gland, located near the thyroid in the lower neck behind the sternum.) More than a hundred Silicon Valley employees have filed lawsuits against their companies for the condition alone. Many other companies grant sick leave for employees diagnosed with CFS, and the Veterans Administration grants disability pay for afflicted veterans.

Whether CFS will in time be definitely linked with electromagnetic fields remains to be seen, but it bears striking similarities to electromagnetic sensitivity syndrome. And many observations regarding EMFs and the human anatomy appear to have the same imprints as CFS. Given the research on electromagnetic fields and the immune system activation followed by long-term suppression, and extrapolation to CFS is not out of line. Also, consider the findings on EMFs and the nighttime melatonin suppression, and relate them to the common paradox in CFS patients that, despite their overwhelming tiredness, they are characteristically unable to sleep between 2:00 and 5:00 a.m. A link is suggested. EMFs are associated with a range of hormonal/neurological effects and central nervous system problems. Plus the research indicating EMFs as co-factors in human disease states as well as viral mutations cannot be ignored.
(Levitt 1995 pp 187-190)

For those intersted In two other papers I wrote, I also draw further connections between CFIDS and EMR:

Isle of Man Removes Phone Masts

Ban for Manx mobile phone masts

Manx Telecom has been banned from putting up mobile phone masts in any property owned by the Public Works Committee on the island. The firm may also be asked to remove small mobile phone transmitters from a number of street lights in Douglas. The Public Works Committee is recommending they should be taken down, because of health concerns. It says although there is no proof of any risk, it is worried about the radiation given off by the equipment. Chairman of the committee Ritchie McNicholl said: "The health of the public is too important to take any chances."

Living in a Sea of Unconsciousness: After Being Zapped, Ridiculed, and Verbally Assaulted

People who haven't done the research seem more than willing to "enlighten" me, a person who is electrosensitive, about the "facts" of EMR exposure - in spite of the fact that I have read more than twenty books on the subject and have been researching this topic for over two years, while they "thinking they are experts" usually know zilch about the topic except for perhaps having read some disinformation article put out by the corporate-controlled media.

I was in a coffee shop today when a person approached me and I said "I can feel the radiation emitted by your cell phone." (This person enjoys mocking when he sees me by waving his cell phone in my face - since he knows that I am electrosensitive.) I did the only thing I could and moved away. At that point he and another person started to ridicule me. When I told them to do the research regarding the topic before jumping to conclusions, one guy became extremely nasty with me, making some snide remark that I was always bringing this topic up. (Well, perhaps if I weren't be zapped all the time (and you weren't ridiculing me) I wouldn't have to try to make people aware of the problem and I wouldn't have to avoid people with cell phones - duh!) I have the strongest feeling that this guy has major stockholdings in some cell phone companies - which is probably why he always becomes uncomfortable when he sees me (and then he blames me for being uncomfortable). Well, I also have the feeling that in his case greed is stronger than compassion.

Now, I had done the most sensible thing I could think of. I informed the said person that I was being affected by his cell phone and moved away. Now, after this (1) these people did not have to ridicule me and (2) this other person had no right in getting nasty with me. In essence, I was being blamed for the fact that I was being zapped and they were acting like assholes.

Well, personally, after being zapped, ridiculed, and verbally attacked, I in turn gave one of these self-righteous bastards back some of his own nastiness and I really hope never to have to talk to this self-righteous asshole again. And if the said person with the cell phone ever waves it in my face again, I will indeed smash it into a million pieces. :) Hi Hi Hi!

The Independent and Geoffrey Lean need our help!!!

Hi Everyone,

The Independent and Geoffrey Lean need our help since the industry's lapdogs seem to be posting away on the Independent's Suggestion Blog. I posted the following after others doing the same to counter the disinformation campaign:

http://ios.typepad.com/ios/2007/05/your_suggestion.html#comment-71890504

I would like to thank the Independent and Mr Geoffrey Lean for drawing attention to the dangers of microwaving the planet and the dangers of mobile phones. I developed ME (Myalgic encephalomyelitis) - also known as CFIDS in the USA - two years ago and after six months of being sick every day was finally able to connect it with the fact that I was being heavily radiated with microwaves from two cell phone towers within 300 meters of my apartment and the fact that all my neighbors had WiFi and it was bleeding into my apartment. I noticed that I felt better at night (when less people are using their mobiles) and when I would go to certain places (that had less electrosmog levels). I would also get very strange anxiety attacks at specific times of the day, which I connected with peak cell phone usage times. Finally, I moved into a cabin up in the mountains where there was no cell phone or television reception and within 24 hours roughly 50% of my symptoms disappeared. I stayed up there for four months. As I started to become better my body became extremely sensitive to electromagnetic radiation. I would get near cell phone towers or people with cell phones and would immediately start to feel quite ill. I have done a lot of research on this topic in the past two years and every symptom found in ME/CFIDS can be explained by research done on the effects of microwaves and other EMR on the human (and/or animal) organism. Also, it can very well explain the drastic increase in autism, ADHD, depression, insomnia, leukemia, brain tumors, breast cancer, prostate cancer, other cancers, and heart disease, which have all increased exponentially with the advent of the cell phone.

Moreover, there is a big coverup campaign by the cell phone industry with attacks trying to discredit scientists and reporters who try to inform us about the dangers.

My life was completely destroyed by this technology. I lost my job, I lost my life savings, I lost my social life (since I cannot be around people with cell phones), and I fight every day to stay healthy in a smog of electromagnetic radiation that is depleting my body of its resources.

People who are being made noticably ill or just do not want to live in this electrosmog have a right not to be radiated. We need, deserve, and have a right to live in sanctuaries away from this insanity.

Best regards,

I absolutely agree with Jon and Don Pedro. Do you have any idea how utterly pathetic you look to anyone who is scientifically literate?

What are you trying to do, become a sort of right-on Daily Mail?

You want suggestions?

1)Get rid of that ridiculous Julia Stephenson – let her peddle her woo-woo somewhere else.

2)Tell Geoffrey Lean to calm down and get a grip.

3)Oh, and pleeeeze, stop being so sanctimonious.

Please employ someone who knows the difference between science and pseudoscience.

There should be a sharp distinction between factual reporting and 'lifestyle' articles. The IoS and Independent have begun to blur the line shamefully.

Agree with all the comments about the science reporting here. Not only does your paper lose a lot of credibility, but it makes me adopt the jaded and cycnical view that the journalists writing the articles are overpaid ignorami detracting from the common knowledge of mankind by peddling this ridiculous tripe. Your article on wi-fi seriously wouldn't have looked out of place in the Mail.

Completely agree with comments relating to "pseudoscience" that you keep publishing - it is absolute rubbish. Stop printing them. Please.

I totally agree with the above comments. The mis-representation of simple science is shameless and unforgiveable. Get your facts straight.

Dr Carlo Speaks: Radiation Is Killing the Bees Despite the Cell Phone Industry's Disinformation Campaign

This seems to be the argument I hear all the time. There is no scientific proof. Planted by the disinformation specialists and repeated by laypeople the world over. The hell there isn't!!! There is a massive amount of scientific proof despite the cell phone industry's attempt to bury it and put pressure on journals not to publish it.

After the first news cycle, the mobile phone industry 'hit squad' went into action. First, they planted stories that cast doubt on the Einstein quote. Never before have I seen such a desperate attempt to distance a quote from a figure as revered as Albert Einstein. In the process, his name was besmerched. Very sad. Next, they conscripted scientists from a number of universities to begin going public with other explanations...viruses, bacteria, pesticides etc., etc., etc.. These alternatives have been making the rounds over the past month. The mobile phone industry is putting quite a bit of money into the pockets of these scientists by supporting their work regarding viruses and alternative explanations. The industry is dealing with it as a politics and public relations problem....thus, manipulation of the public perception is the appropriate remedy for them. Sadly, this is business as usual for the mobile phone industry.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dear Dr. Carlo:

I have read recently in Salon.com that the theory that bees are disappearing because of exposure to EMR is not supported by any science. You were on Good Morning America supporting that theory. Who is correct?

Carol H
Amherst, MA

Dear Carol:

Unfortunately, the situation with the bees is a page out of the playbook that we deal with all the time with the mobile phone industry. When the bee story first broke, it was based on a German study that showed information carrying radio waves disrupted the ability of bees to make it back to their hives. That work was made public about two months ago. There were other data to support it as well. You can see some of that on our SWI website -- note especially an exceptionally insightful article by Milt Bowling posted there.

The news media ran with the story, bolstered a great deal by a quote attributed to Albert Einstein something along these lines: 'watch the bees. when they disappear, man will disappear within four years'......The mobile phone industry was caught off-guard by the widespread media attention the story garnered.

Most people in the public don't know the back story, so they do not see the manipulation coming or have the necessary bases for skepticism to see through it. But here is the bottom line:

The colony collapse disorder has occurred concurrently on four continents within a very short time frame. If the reason was biological or chemical, there would be a pattern of epidemic spread....we would be able to trace the spread of bee disappearance or Colony Collapse Disorder from a source similar to the spread of SARS a few years ago. That is not the case. The condition has hit each continent at roughly the same time. That would mean the cause has to have hit the continents at the same time as well. Mobile phones meet that criterion.

None of the biological or chemical hypotheses actually have a mechanistic explanation that is plausible. The science for the biological and chemical alternatives is far thinner than the science supporting the EMR connection. A case of the pot calling the kettle black.

The disruption of intercellular communication hypothesis that we now know effects cell membranes in most species is biologically plausible...and no other theory has that support.

The basis for a biological mechanism, coupled with the saturation in information carrying radio waves we have globally in the past 14 months, provides the underpinning. In 2004, we had the first billion cell phone users globally, the accumulation over 20 years; by mid 2006, we had the second billion; today we have surpassed three billion. That suggests we are near a saturation point of these waves in the ambient environment. The bees are likely the harbinger or the proverbial 'canaries in the coal mine'.

Taken together, EMR is the only explanation that makes sense regarding the disappearing bees: the timing is correct -- the problem has occurred primarily within the past two years....when we have nearly tripled the background level of information carrying radio waves; the pattern is global so that suggests a cause that is globally present; there is at least one peer-reviewed study that supports it, and there is a mechanism documented that lends biological plausibility.

In our view, this is a serious 'red flag' of risk that should be heeded. This is yet another example of mobile phone industry orchestration aimed at distracting the public from data that can save lives.

Are Microwaves a/the Major Causal Factor in CFS/ME?

by Art KAB

Provided by www.newmediaexplorer.org/sepp December 7, 2006

The evidence:

1. The symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome mimic those of what theRussians have termed "Radio Wave Illness" but also known as "Microwave Sickness."

2. Outbreaks of "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" or "Yuppie Flu" suddenlybecame widespread in the mid 80s just as commercial cellular phonenetworks were being set up in the United States and other parts of the world.

3. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and a number of other similar syndromes(Autism, ADHD, Alzheimer's, etc.) increased exponentially in the early1990s with the advent and spread of digital (2G) cellular phone technology.

4. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Autism, and ADHD are found to be moreprevalent in countries with a plethora of cell phone networks andelectrosmog present while being just about absent in those countries with few like Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, and Laos which have been late toimplement cell phone technology. (These disease states are alsoextremely rare among the Amish - who due to religious beliefs do notuse electricity.)

5. Microwaves have been shown in studies to induce Oxidative Damageleading to a decrease in Super Oxide Dimutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione, CoQ10 along with evidence of increased byproducts ofoxidative stress to cell membranes, MDA. Oxidative damage has been found to be a major factor in CFS and people with CFS consistentlyfound to be depleted in the above body's natural antioxidents.

6. Exposure to microwaves and other EMFs is known to abnormallyaffect calcium flux into and out of cells. This is also a abnormality found in people with CFS/ME.

7. Mitochondria Disfunction - shown to be induced by microwaveexposure - is also an abnormality found in CFS/ME.

8. Red blood cells (erythrocytes) are altered and their count decreased by exposure to microwave radiation. Red blood cells are responsible fortransporting oxygen to and carbon dioxide away from cells in the brainand other organs of the body. Lack of oxygen to the brain and otherorgans can result in brain fog, inability to concentrate, dizziness, andnausea - symptoms found in CFS; they are also interestingly found inaltitude sickness due to hypoxia or a lack of oxygen being transported to the tissues in the brain and other organs.

9. Microwaves have been shown in studies to induce a decrease in thenumbers of Natural Killer (NK) cells. Low numbers of NK Cells are foundin People With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (PWC), and are thought to be responsible for the reactivation of viral and other infections found inPWC.

10. In workers occupationally exposed long-term to microwaves a lowervalue of T-helper/T-suppressor (T4/T8) ratio were found. PWC have a lower than normal ratio of T4/T8.

11. EMF exposure has been shown to effect an increase in viruses, bacteria, mold, parasites, and yeast in the blood of the human host. These pathogens are all commonly found in PWC.

12. Microwaves have been shown in studies to induce "subliminal" stresscausing the adrenals to excrete more cortisone and adrenalineeventually leading to adrenal exhaustion. Adrenal exhaustion is a major factor in CFS.

13. Studies have shown a decrease 5-HT in the blood of those exposedto microwaves. 5-HT is a precursor to the production of serotonin. Lowlevels of serotonin have been linked to anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression are symptoms commonly found in People With CFS(PWC).

14. Microwaves are known to induce a decrease in norepinephrinelevels. Norepinephrine is essential for control of the autonomousnervous system. The autonomous nervous system is known to be affected in people with CFS - and in Japan, people with CFS (PWC) arenow often also diagnosed as having the now extremely commonAutonomous Nervous System Disorder (jiritsushinkeishichosho).Norepinephrine is also connected with short-term memory disturbances and depression, both of which are found in PWC.

15. Melatonin production is altered by exposure to microwaves.Melatonin is an antioxidant necessary for sleep. Melatonin is believed tobe altered in CFS with irregular sleep patterns and insomnia symptoms associated with CFS.

16. Dopamine levels are also known to be affected by microwaveradiation exposure. PWC have been found to often have low levels ofdopamine with decreased dopamine being linked to depression, a symptoms also found in PWC.

17. Decreases in the hormone Acetylcholine - known to be induced byexposure to EMR - is an abnormality also found in CFS/ME.

18. People with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome usually feel better at night (in spite of sleep problems) - when there are less people using their cellphones and hence less electrosmog.

19. Some EMF frequencies have been shown to induce restlessness. PWC often complain of restlessness and many have a condition called restless leg syndrome (RLS).

20. It has been documented that people who have had a cell phonetower installed near their homes suddenly start having the followingsymptoms: headaches, dizziness, inability to concentrate, memory problems, fatigue, worsening vision, swollen lymph nodes, nausea, anddecreased appetite. All these symptoms have been found in people withCFS.

21. It has been found in CFS (and Autism) via SPECT scans that there is decreased blood flow to the brain. Studies have shown thatelectromagnetic fields (EMF), like those emitted by cell phones, alterregional cerebral blood flow.

22. Microwaves have been shown to alter blood coagulation. People with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome often have a coagulation dysfunction.

23. PWC often suffer from allergies. Allergies involve the production ofhistamine by mast cells. Microwaves have been known to turn on mastcells to produce more histamine and other EMFs have been to shown toactually increase the number of mast cells in the body. Microwaves havealso been found to increase IgE antibodies in people with atopic eczema.

24. Low Blood Pressure (hypotension) is known to be caused bymicrowave exposure and it is also a symptom found in CFS/ME.

25. Microwaves are also known to adversely affect the heart. Peoplewith CFS usually go on to develop heart problems in the later stages of their illness.

26. Studies have shown an adverse effect of microwaves on the eyes.PWC often complain of problems with their eyes and vision deterioration.

27. It is known that microwaves and other EMR alter the pineal gland's production of melatonin and serotonin which - among other actions -regulate the body's biocycles. People with Chronic Fatigue Syndromeusually have a dysfunctional pineal gland.

28. Nitric Oxide buildup - a byproduct of microwave exposure - is also found in CFS.

29. An opening of the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) - shown to be inducedby microwave radiation exposure - is also found in PWC/ME.

30. Six thousand German doctors - many specializing in Environmental Medicine - have signed the Freidburger Appeal - after the governmentfailed to act - since they have noticed a correlation between amicrowave exposure by cell phones and cell phone towers and anumber of symptoms, many of which are found in CFS/ME.

31. There have been a number of anecdotal accounts from PWC/MEwho have cured themselves or eliminated many of their symptoms byreducing their exposure to or removing themselves from anelectromagnetic environment.

Having said that I think that all this evidence is pretty substantial. Isn't ittime for good people to stand up and say something in numbers, to stand up and do something together?

"Somehow these dangers must be brought into the open so forcefully that the entire population of the world is made aware of them. Scientists must begin to ask and seek answers tot he questions raised in thischapter, regardless of the effect on their careers [emphasis mine].These energies are too dangerous to me entrusted forever to politicians, military leaders, and their lapdog researchers." (Becker, 1985, p. 328)

Hence, in examining the pieces of the puzzle called CFS and connecting those pieces to the research on the effects of microwave radiation andother EMR, the overwhelming evidence presented in this paper seems toanswer the question, "Are microwaves and other EMR a causal factor in CFS/ME?" with a definite and reverberating "Yes."It shall be interesting to see how those who make their living throughthe business and politics of denial, deciet, deception, will try to spin the facts. The truth of the matter is that the present ambient level of EMR inour environment is dangerous and is making too many of us sick. It istime we moved from denial to acceptance, from ignorance toawareness, and apathy to action.
