Smartphones, tablets causing mental health issues in kids as young as two

Children as young as two are developing mental health problems because of smartphones and tablets, scientists warn.
Just an hour a day staring at a screen can be enough to make children more likely to be anxious or depressed.
This could be making them less curious, less able to finish tasks, less emotionally stable and lowering their self-control, the DailyMail reports.
Although teenagers are most at risk from the damaging devices, children under the age of 10 and toddlers' still-developing brains are also being affected.
But research shows 'zombie' children spend nearly five hours every day gawping at electronic devices.
Researchers from San Diego State University and the University of Georgia say time spent on smartphones is a serious but avoidable cause of mental health issues.
"Half of mental health problems develop by adolescence," professors Jean Twenge and Keith Campbell said. "There is a need to identify factors linked to mental health issues that are [able to be changed] in this population, as most are difficult or impossible to influence. How children and adolescents spend their leisure time is [easier] to change."
Parents and teachers must cut the amount of time children spend online or watching television while they're studying, socialising, eating or even playing sport.
Professor Twenge said her study, one of the biggest of its kind, backs the American Academy of Pediatrics' established screen time limit – one hour per day for children aged two to five.
It also suggests a similar limit – perhaps two hours – should be applied to school-aged children and adolescents, she added.
The researchers analysed data provided by the parents of more than 40,000 US children aged two to 17 for a nationwide health survey in 2016. The questionnaire asked about the youngsters' medical care, any emotional, developmental or behavioural issues and their daily screen time.
Adolescents spending more than seven hours a day on screens are twice as likely to have been diagnosed with anxiety or depression as those who spent an hour. Links between screen time and wellbeing are stronger among adolescents than young children, the study found.
Professor Twenge said: "At first, I was surprised the associations were larger for adolescents. However, teens spend more time on their phones and on social media, and we know from other research that these activities are more strongly linked to low wellbeing than watching television and videos, which is most of younger children's screen time."
Even moderate use of four hours is also associated with lower psychological well-being than one hour a day.
Pre-schoolers, or under fives, who are high users are twice as likely to often lose their temper – and are 46 per cent more prone to not be able to calm down when excited.
Among 14 to 17 year olds, more than four in ten (42.2 per cent) of those in the study who spent more than seven hours a day on screens did not finish tasks.
About one in eleven (9 per cent) of 11 to 13-year-olds who spent an hour with screens daily were not curious or interested in learning new things.
Writing in the journal Preventative Medicine Reports, the professors said they were particularly interested in links between screen time and diagnoses of anxiety and depression in youngsters, which have not yet been studied in great detail.
They said: "Previous research on associations between screen time and psychological well being among children and adolescents has been conflicting, leading some researchers to question the limits on screen time suggested by physician organisations."
The US National Institute of Health estimates children and adolescents commonly spend an average of five to seven hours on screens during leisure time. Evidence is growing of the adverse effects this has on health.
This year the World Health Organisation decided to include gaming disorder in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases.
And in December 2017 a team of Oxford University researchers found UK 'zombie' children's average daily screen time has leapt in a generation from just under three hours to four hours and 45 minutes.
Experts warn 'addicted' children risk sleeplessness, obesity and falling victim to cyber-bullying, while losing valuable social skills through a lack of face-to-face contact.

Abstract

Long term exposure of electromagnetic radiations (EMR) from cell phones and Wi-Fi hold greater propensity to cause anxiety disorders. However, the studies investigating the effects of chronic exposure of EMR are limited. Therefore, we investigated the effects of repeated exposure of discrete frequency of EMR in experimental animals. Male rats were exposed to EMR (900, 1800 and 2450 MHz) for 28 (1 h/day) days. Long term exposure of EMR (2450 MHz) induced anxiety like behavior. It deregulated the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis in rats as observed by increase in plasma corticosterone levels apart from decreased corticotrophin releasing hormone-2 (CRH-2) and Glucocorticoid receptor (GR) expression in amygdala. Further, it impaired mitochondrial function and integrity. The expression of Bcl2 showed significant decrease while Bax and ratio of Bax: Bcl2 were increased in the mitochondria and vice versa in cytoplasm indicating altered regulation of apoptosis. EMR exposure caused release of cytochrome-c and expression of caspase-9 ensuing activation of apoptotic cell death. Additional set of experiments performed to estimate the pattern of cell death showed necrotic and apoptotic amygdalar cell death after EMR exposure. Histopathological studies also revealed a significant decrease in neuronal cells in amygdala. The above findings indicate that long-term exposure of EMR radiation (2450 MHz) acts as a stressor and induces anxiety-like behaviors with concomitant pathophysiological changes in EMR subjected rats.

Could your Wireless Technology be Contributing to your Anxiety?

Does this happen to you? 

You pick up your cell phone and find that you are breathing more quickly and your heart is pounding even though you at sitting down.  Your stomach feels queasy and your palms begin to sweat.  You may feel a bit dizzy or faint.  The longer you use your cell phone the warmer it becomes.  Your hand holding the phone begins to tingle.  You develop a metallic taste in your mouth and a mild headache.  Sometimes you feel a phantom ring/vibration in your pocket but the cell phone isn’t there.  Even though you picked up your cell phone you forget who you were going to call.  Your short-term memory is getting worse.  At school you feel as though a fog has enveloped your brain and you can’t think clearly.  Increasingly, when you talk you can’t recall certain words and focusing on an assignment is increasingly difficult.  You are irritable and anxious and can’t seem to sit still.  At night you have trouble falling asleep and sometimes you wake-up for no apparent reason and just toss and turn.  You visit the bathroom frequently and occasionally get nose bleeds.  You wake up tired.  You feel a lot older than you are and wonder what is wrong with you.  It seems your get-up-and-go, got-up-and-went.   


You take your cell phone everywhere, indeed you can’t leave home without it.  You sleep with it under your pillow and use it to connect with friends.  Your laptop computer and tablet are just an arm’s length away and you browse on the internet using Wi-Fi at home and at school.  You download videos and music and send photos to friends.  You check your cell phone every few minutes to make certain you are not missing any news from your friends.  The time you misplaced your cell phone, you went into a panic and couldn’t leave home until you found it.  Your cell phone is your life-line to the world. 

If you have some of the symptoms mentioned above you may be allergic to your cell phone and the other wireless technology around you.  Few people realize this but exposure to radio frequency radiation (RFR) emitted by mobile phones, Wi-Fi routers, wireless baby monitors, smart meters, and certain wireless games can cause anxiety.  This type of radiation increases stress proteins in your body and puts the autonomic nervous system (ANS) into sympathetic mode.  What this means is that your body goes into a “flight or fight” response physiologically.  You can’t seem to relax and feel agitated most of the time. 

These symptoms refer to a condition called, “electro-hyper-sensitivity” or EHS for short.  This means that the radio frequency radiation emitted by your cell phone and other wireless technology is irritating your body. 

So what can do you?

Try a digital detox.  Try going for a few hours without using any wireless technology.  Turn your Wi-Fi router and all your wireless technology off at night so you can get a good night’s sleep and put your cell phone into airplane mode so no one can call you and disturb your sleep.  Go for a walk in nature and become aware of things around you.  Breathe deeply and slowly and allow your body to relax.  Just breathing slowly for 1 minute can do you a lot of good and take the edge off your anxiety.  Do this several times a day. 

However, for long-term benefits a longer digital detox is required.  Start with a few hours and build it up to a day and then a weekend.  Whenever you feel like checking your email, drink a glass of water instead and sip is slowly.  Challenge your friends so see how long they can go without using their cell phone and share your results with us!

Neurological disease and disorders have been increasing at alarming rates.  Anxiety, ADHD, depression and autism have been increasing at alarming rates in children, adolescents, and young adults.  Please see the statistics below, as well as over 10 studies that show the effect of Wi-Fi and cell phones on anxiety, depression,  neurodegenerationmemory and/or learning in children and animal studies.  

The vast majority of people have not heard about the health effects of chronic wireless radiation exposure, despite the $30 million US government NTP study published in November 2018 showing a clear association between cell phone radiation and cancer https://www.niehs.nih.gov/health/materials/cell_phone_radiofrequency_radiation_studies_508.pdf.  Every day I see people storing cell phones in their pants pockets and bras, holding cell phones against their heads, and giving cell phones to their babies and children to use like teething rings and pacifying toys.  Please share the information below.

Anxiety, ADHD, depression, and other neurological problems, including autism, have been found to be effects of chronic exposure to RF radiation.

2)  Mortazavi et al, 2011.  The Pattern of Mobile Phone Use and Prevalence of Self-Reported Symptoms in Elementary and Junior High School Students in Shiraz, Iran.  Iran J Med Sci June 2011; Vol 36 No 2

In a study of 469 healthy elementary and junior high school studentsstatistically significant higher prevalence of self-reported symptoms such asheadache (P=0.009, table 1), myalgia (P=0.0002, table 2 ), palpitation (P=0.0001, table 2), fatigue (P=9×10-8, table 2), attention problems (P=0.0002, table 3) and nervousness (P=9×10-8, table 3) was found in students who had used mobile phones compared to those never used these phones. Furthermore, a statistically significant association was found between the time mobile phones were used in talk mode and the number of headaches per month (P=0.035), number of vertigo per month (P=0.036), number of sleeping problem per month (P=0.002), or even the site of headache (P=0)


3)  Pall, M.  “Microwave frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) produce widespread neuropsychiatric effects including depression” Journal of Chemical Neuroanatomy 75 (2016) 43–51

“Soviet and Western literature shows that much of the impact of non-thermal microwave exposures in experimental animals occurs in the brain and peripheral nervous system... These may be generated through roles of VGCC activation, producing excessive neurotransmitter/neuroendocrine release as well as oxidative/nitrosative stress and other responses…  Excessive VGCC activity has been shown to have roles in producing neuropsychiatric changes in humans. Two U.S. government reports from the 1970s to 1980s provide evidence for many neuropsychiatric effects of non-thermal microwave EMFs, based on occupational exposure studies. 18 more recent epidemiological studies, provide substantial evidence that microwave EMFs … can each produce similar patterns of neuropsychiatric effects…Among the more commonly reported changes are sleep disturbance/insomnia, headache, depression… fatigue/tiredness…concentration/attention dysfunction, memory changes, dizziness, irritability, loss of appetite... restlessness/anxiety, nausea, skin burning/tingling/dermographism and EEG changes. In summary, then, the mechanism of action of microwave EMFs, the role of the VGCCs in the brain, the impact of non-thermal EMFs on the brain, extensive epidemiological studies performed over the past 50 years, and five criteria testing for causality, all collectively show that various non-thermal microwave EMF exposures produce diverse neuropsychiatric effects.”

4) Buchner and Eger, 2011.  A study done on a German town (Rimbach) of 60 people before (Jan/Feb 2004) and after (thru July 2005) a cell tower installation showed statistically significant effects on neurotransmitters at peak cell phone signal exposure levels of 60-100 uW/m2. Noradrenaline and adrenaline INCREASED, while dopamine and PEA DECREASED.  Noradrenaline and adrenaline going up signify increased stress levels (or increased anxiety), and dopamine going down decreases ability to concentrate, and decreased PEA is implicated in ADD as low PEA appears in a large proportion of ADD (Ritalin, a chemical similar to PEA, is used in ADD treatment).  

Study also says that children and chronically ill are more vulnerable to effects of wireless radiation, and that exposure to other wireless signals such as Wi-Fi amplifies the effects of the cell phone radiation on noradrenaline, adrenaline in children and the chronically ill (people with allergies)


5) Dasdag et al. Effects Of 2.4 Ghz Radiofrequency Radiation Emitted From Wi-Fi Equipment On microRna Expression In Brain Tissue.” International Journal of Radiation Biology, vol. 16, 2015, pp. 1-26.

Study showed that "long-term exposure of 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi may lead to adverse effects such as neurodegenerative diseases originated from the alteration of some miRNA expression. Results were statistically significant.  Long Term exposure [24 hours a day for 1 year] to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi radiation can alter expression of some of the miRNAs such as miR-106b-5p (adj p * _ 0.010) and miR-107 (adj p * _ 0.005). We observed that mir 107 expression is 3.3 times and miR-106b-5p expression is 3.65 times lower in the exposure group than in the control group. "


6) Saikhedkar N, et al. Effects of mobile phone radiation (900 MHz radiofrequency) on structure and functions of rat brain. Neurological Research, vol. 2, no. 6, 2014, pp. 2499-504.

Rats (age 30 days, 120 ¡ 5 g) were exposed to 900 MHz radio waves (cell phone) at an average SAR of 0.99 W/kg by means of a mobile hand set for 4 hours per day for 15 days. [Cell phones sold in the US are not to exceed a SAR of 1.6W/kg]  "A significant change in behavior, i.e., more anxiety and poor learning was shown by test animals as compared to controls and sham group. A significant change in level of antioxidant enzymes and nonenzymatic antioxidants, and increase in lipid peroxidation were observed in test rats. Histological examination showed neurodegenerative cells in hippocampal sub regions and cerebral cortex.  Discussion: Thus our findings indicate extensive neurodegeneration on exposure to radio waves. Increased production of reactive oxygen species due to exhaustion of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants and increased lipid peroxidation are indicating extensive neurodegeneration in selective areas of CA1, CA3, DG, and cerebral cortex. This extensive neuronal damage results in alterations in behavior related to memory and learning."

"A neuronal damage of the kind described here may not have immediate demonstrable consequences, but in the long run it may result in reduced brain reserve capacity that might be unveiled by other late neuronal diseases. We cannot exclude the possibility that after some decades of daily (often) use, a whole generation of users may suffer from the negative effects, perhaps as early as in middle age."



        Rats were exposed to 2.45 GHz Wi-Fi for 4 h/day for 45 days at 7.88W/m2 (=788uW/cm2) [FCC limit is 1000uW/cm2 for 30 minutes, so exposure within US limits]   
 “The exposed rats elicited memory decline and anxiety behavior. Exposure decreased activities of super oxide dismutase, catalase and reduced glutathione levels whereas increased levels of brain lipid peroxidation was encountered in the radiation exposed rats, showing compromised anti-oxidant defense. reduction in number of dendritic branching and intersections which corresponds to alteration in dendritic structure of neurons, affecting neuronal signaling. The study clearly indicates that exposure of rats to microwave radiation of 2.45 GHz leads to detrimental changes in brain leading to lowering of learning and memory and expression of anxiety behavior in rats along with fall in brain antioxidant enzyme systems.”

8)  Zhang, Jet al, 2017.  Effects of 1.8 GHz Radiofrequency Fields on the Emotional Behavior and Spatial Memory of Adolescent Mice.  International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.  2017, 14, 1344; doi:10.3390/ijerph14111344

4 week exposure to 1.8GHz at 2.2 W/kg in mice increased anxiety-like behavior in rats. GABA levels decreased significantly after RF exposure.   



Study found that RF-EMF exposure led to myelin sheath damage and hyperactivity-like behaviour in mice exposed to 835 MHz RF-EMF at a specific absorption rate (SAR) of 4.0 W/kg for 5 hours/day during 12 weeks.  Demyelination was induced in cortical neurons following prolonged RF-EMF exposure and suggests a potential cause of neurological or neurobehavioural disorders.

Adult rats were exposed daily to EMR (frequency 1800 MHz, specific absorption rate 0.843 W/kg, power density 0.02 mW/cm2, modulated at 217 Hz) and sacrificed after 1, 2 and 4 months of daily EMR exposure as well as after stopping EMR for 1 month (after 4 months of daily EMR exposure). RESULTS: The exposure to EMR resulted in significant changes in DA, NE and 5-HT [serotonin] in the four selected areas of adult rat brain.
CONCLUSIONS: The exposure of adult rats to EMR may cause disturbances in monoamine neurotransmitters and this may underlie many of the adverse effects reported after EMR including memory, learning, and stress.
