Cows Are Electrosensitive! So why is it so difficult for some people to believe that people might be too?

Cows Are Electrosensitive!
So why is it so difficult for some people to believe that people might be too?

The ongoing mystery of the magnetosensing cows

Back in 2008, a team of German researchers published a paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that claimed to demonstrate that cattle, when resting or grazing, actually align their bodies along the Earth's magnetic fields.
The team's results — which were based on satellite imagery of over 8,500 cattle from different regions around the globe — were compelling, but a recent attempt to replicate the researchers' findings has failed, inciting some pretty serious scientific squabble. So where does the great magnetic cow debate stand today?
The original findings, presented by a research team led by zoologist Hynek Burda, used images acquired from Google Earth to demonstrate the cows' magneto-reception capabilities.
"Amazingly," wrote the researchers, "this ubiquitous phenomenon does not seem to have been noticed by herdsmen, ranchers, or hunters. Because wind and light conditions could be excluded as a common denominator determining the body axis orientation, magnetic alignment is the most parsimonious explanation."
At the time, the team's findings garnered quite a bit of media attention — something that apparently rubbed some researchers the wrong way.
"When in 2008 [Burda and his colleagues] started to announce their surprising findings in [the] mass media, we got the impression that this is not the way science should be made and we took a closer look," says Lukas Jelinek, an electromagnetic-field researcher and one of the authors ofthe recent replication study. "We found out that it is not as fantastic as it was presented."
Using a new set of Google Maps imagery of around 3400 cattle, Jelinek and his colleagues concluded that the cows simply weren't lining up, and chalked the first team's findings up to things like poor quality of Google satellite photographs, lack of blinding in their evaluations, and subconscious bias.
But according to Burda and his colleagues, Jelinik and his team have been looking at the satellite imagery all wrong. Burda says that half of Jelinek's data has to be thrown out, because it features cows near high-voltage power lines, which his team hypothesizes can disrupt magneto-sensing capabilities in cattle. What's more, Burda's team investigated the behavior of cattle in herds, while Jelinek's team analyzed individual cows. By the time Burda and his colleagues got finished cleaning up the Jelinek data, they found that it actually supported their original findings that cattle can, in fact, magneto-sense.
So where does this leave us? When Nature News asked Sönke Johnsen (who studies magneto-reception at Duke University but was unaffiliated with either group's investigation) for his opinion, he sided with Burda and his team's initial findings:
[Johnsen] says that at least some of the images in question should probably not have been analysed. He also suggests that the proper unit of evaluation is probably the herd, as the alignment of individual cows in herds is unlikely to be independent. Overall, he says that the original results, "while mysterious, still stand".

Your wireless router may be putting you in danger

(NaturalNews) The debate surrounding the relative dangers of electromagnetic radiation has raged on for years. As technology has become more and more advanced, and more electromagnetic fields, or EMFs, are created, the fact that electromagnetic radiation can be harmful cannot be ignored. Wireless routers, one of the most convenient products in homes across the world, can actually contribute high levels of EMF exposure to your home.

What Are EMFs?

When any kind of electronic device is used, it often creates its own EMF. The structure of the EMF varies, depending upon the frequency and intensity of the electricity; however, all EMFs have the power to become harmful if you are exposed to them too often or for long periods of time.
It is clear, then, why having so many technological gadgets in one's home can be dangerous. By living amongst a variety of EMFs, you can interfere with the delicate electricity that works within your own body.

The Dangers of EMF Exposure

When your body's electrical system is altered, there are several different health problems that can occur. These include brain tumors, exhaustion, heart problems, and a higher risk of cancer, including leukemia. Furthermore, people have reported other health conditions associated with EMF exposure, but research has not yet confirmed the long-term effects that electromagnetic radiation from household items can have on an individual.

Why Are Wireless Routers So Dangerous?

When it comes to the dangerous technological devices within your home, wireless routers contribute a great deal to EMF exposure. Wireless routers allow electronics to communicate without the inconvenience of wires, but in doing so they are spewing massive amounts of radiation throughout your home. In fact, an average wireless network can transmit radiation at the same frequency as a microwave.

But the intensity of the radiation is not the only danger. Whereas other electronic devices are turned off at some point during the day or night, wireless routers are on all the time. This results in your home being covered in EMFs every hour of every day. Furthermore, the wireless networks of your neighbors may be infringing upon your space. If you can pick up a neighbor's wireless signal on your laptop, then their EMFs are infiltrating your home.

What Can You Do to Protect Your House?

The best thing you can do to avoid overexposure to EMFs is to cut down on the amount of electronic devices that you use. If you are not using a particular computer, printer, scanner, television, microwave, or other technological gadget, go ahead and turn it off and unplug it. Unplugging it is important, because even if these devices are off they can still emit radiation.

Furthermore, if possible, forgo a wireless router and stick with the traditional, non-wireless alternative. This may be a challenge if you have several laptops that you use to connect to the Internet, but if you primarily use a desktop you should be able to achieve this without any problem. Additionally, opt for a printer that plugs into your computer, rather than one that connects electronically. If you cannot go without a wireless router, try to limit EMFs in other areas of your home by unplugging anything you are not currently using.

Wireless routers can be a dangerous source of EMFs, and if you can do without them, you can greatly improve your family's health. If not, cutting back on the use of other electronics can help reduce the total radiation to which your family is exposed.

"Wireless technology in our schools comes with health risks to our kids"

Letter to the Editor of the Narragansett Times - South Kingstown Rhode Island

"I read with dismay the recent article titled "Technology vastly improving at SK Schools" in your Nov. 2 edition. The SK [South Kingstown] School District proudly reports the use of wireless controllers with 95 access points throughout our schools, yet nowhere do they mention that the type of radiation emitted by this wireless technology was recently classified as a Class 2B Carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO). Mr. Mega of the School Committee sees mobile (wireless) devices as "critical" and said he promotes "21st century learning." Yet he is doing nothing but parroting key marketing slogans used by a savvy telecommunications industry to cleverly convince ignorant U.S. school officials to transition to wireless technology. Why are wireless devices being so aggressively marketed to U.S. schools? Because the telecom industry's markets are drying up overseas where governments have become aware of the health risks. Steps are being taken around the globe to protect citizens--especially children-- from the health hazards caused by non-ionizing radiation. Accordingly Wi-Fi is being removed from schools, hospitals, and public institutions in many countries, especially in light of the new WHO announcement that confirms what independent, non-industry funded scientists have known for decades . . .

"This isn't about making our kids smarter--the wireless industry has only one interest in our children, and it's called profit. Shame on you Superintendent Stringfellow and School Committee members for falling for savvy marketing programs and ignoring the science. And may God help our children who have been utterly failed by the adults who are entrusted with their safety . . ."

SUICIDES ‘LINKED TO PHONE MASTS’

Story Image

There are thousands of masts in Britain
Sunday June 22,2008

By Lucy Johnston

THE spate of deaths among young people in Britain’s suicide capital could be linked to radio waves from dozens of mobile phone transmitter masts near the victims’ homes.

Dr Roger Coghill, who sits on a Government advisory committee on mobile radiation, has discovered that all 22 youngsters who have killed themselves in Bridgend, South Wales, over the past 18 months lived far closer than average to a mast.

He has examined worldwide studies linking proximity of masts to depression. Dr Coghill’s work is likely to trigger alarm and lead to closer scrutiny of the safety of masts, which are frequently sited on public buildings such as schools and hospitals.

It is also likely to fuel more campaigns against placing masts close to public places on health grounds.

Dr Coghill said last night there was strong circumstantial evidence that the masts may have triggered depression in those from Bridgend who took their lives.

They include Kelly Stephenson, 20, who hanged herself from a shower rail in February this year while on holiday in Folkestone, Kent.

Dr Coghill said: “There is a body of research that has over the years pointed to the fact that exposure to mobile radiation can lead to depression. There is evidence of higher suicide rates where people live near any electrical equipment that gives off radio or electrical waves.”

There are now 70 million mobile phone handsets in the UK and around 50,000 masts. Both emit radio signals and electromagnetic fields that can penetrate the brain, and for many years campaigners have argued that this could seriously damage people’s health.

The national average for proximity to a mobile phone transmitter varies depending on the type of mast. The latest masts are far more powerful so they can transmit more sophisticated data, such as photos and videos for people to download on internet phones.

Masts are placed on average 800 metres away from each home across the country. In Bridgend the victims lived on average only 356 metres away.

The national average distance from a new powerful mast is a kilometre while in Bridgend it is 540 metres. Three transmitters were within 200 metres, 13 within 400 metres and as many as 22 within 500 metres of victims’ homes. Carwyn Jones, 28, who hanged himself last week, was the third young person in his street to commit suicide.

Research shows young people’s brains are more susceptible to radio wave energy. Only two weeks ago a report identified mobiles as having an effect on sleep patterns.

Dr Coghill added: “What seems to be happening is that the electrical energy is having an effect on the chemistry of the brain, depleting serotonin levels. We know that in depression serotonin levels are low and that a standard treatment for depression is to give drugs to boost serotonin levels. As they begin to work, the patient’s depression lifts.”

He said urgent research was needed because Britain was now covered with thousands of masts, many close to homes, schools and offices.

Since January 5, 2007, there have been 22 deaths of young people in the Bridgend area. Some believe the suicides are linked but so far experts have failed to find a common cause.

Thomas Davies, 20, hanged himself in February 2007. Last night his brother Nathan, 19, welcomed Dr Coghill’s research. “As far as this family is concerned nothing can bring Tom back,” he said. “But if there is a link found and something can be done then it could prevent further suicides.”

But Mike Dolan, executive director of the Mobile Operators Association, dismissed Dr Coghill’s research. “This is an insensitive and outrageous piece of speculation which has no basis in established science,” he said.

The Government’s Health Protection Agency insisted that fields from mobile masts – even modern powerful masts – were well within international agreed safety limits. “There is no evidence that masts do you harm. The levels of radio waves are very low.”

Documentary: Is Your Cell Phone Killing You?

Hi

The documentary "Is Your Cell Phone Killing You?" was produced
in New Zealand. It investigates our radiation exposure in relation to
cell phones, powerlines, radio mast, cell phone masts, children,
vested interest's, WiFi in School's, electo-sensitivity and precautions.

Compelling scientific research is linking electromagnetic radiation
to a host of serious health problems – ranging from depression and
miscarriage to Alzheimer’s and cancer.  Many scientists and
health professionals are now warning that our long term exposure
at levels well below the existing safety standards could result in a
global public health crisis.

"Is Your Cell Phone Killing You?" features compelling interviews with
international and New Zealand scientists and experts, health professionals,
concerned citizens and people who claim that everyday exposure to
electromagnetic radiation is making them sick.

"Is Your Cell Phone Killing You?" critically examines one of the most important
scientific debates of the 21st century.

Some reviews:

Have watched the production.  Brilliant. Well done. Very thought
provoking.  You got the balance right.  Can't wait for it to be aired.

Brian Stein, Chairman,
UK Radiation Research

"I loved it, really good job. This documentary puts the whole EMR
issue in perspective.  The evidence for harm from mobile phones is
strong and gets stronger each day, and "Is Your Cell Phone Killing You?"
presents that evidence and raises other issues such as exposure to
power lines and children's exposure in a balanced and thought provoking fashion."

David O. Carpenter, M.D
Director, Institute for Health and the Environment
University at Albany, New York

"Is Your Cell Phone Killing You?' presents a large amount of very interesting
information about the dangers of cell phone radiation and the health effects of
electro magnetic radiation. This fast moving documentary should be mandatory
viewing for anyone who uses a cell phone".

Martin Weatherall
Co Director
The WEEP Initiative

"Is Your Cell Phone Killing You?” is an unflinching look at the issue of health effects
from cell phones and other EMF radiation sources we are all exposed to.  Shot in
New Zealand, the film is relevant to every community in the world, for we all share
the same biology and similar legal and political systems when it comes to how the
industry propagated this harmful technology onto an unknowing public.  Refreshingly
free of industry bias, even though it asks the question, the film leaves no doubt at the
end that “Yes indeed, your cell phone may be killing you!” For anyone who uses a cell
phone or lives in an area where there are cell towers, antennas or power lines and has
ever doubted the relationship between EM radiation and health effects, this film is a must see!!!

Risks of mobile phones to children are being 'downplayed'

Risks of mobile phones to children are being 'downplayed'

Vicky Fobel, MobileWise
14th November, 2011

Risks of mobile phones to

Industry repeats the mantra 'children should be discouraged from using mobiles excessively' while doing nothing to ensure it happens, says Vicky Fobel from the campaign group MobileWise

The wireless world is exploding. New wireless applications are being developed constantly and there are now more mobile phones than people in the UK. Even young children are buying into mobile technology in their millions.

Along with the convenience mobiles afford, however, come concerns. How is the radiation they produce affecting our health and the health of our children?

Official advice acknowledges that there may be a problem but plays it down. Manufacturers meanwhile imply there is no evidence of ill-effects and that, if mobiles were harmful, those problems would be manifesting themselves by now.

Both ignore the mounting scientific evidence pointing to damage to health from prolonged mobile use, which was acknowledged in May by the World Health Organization’s scientific panel. It classified the radiation emitted by mobile phones and wireless devices as “possibly carcinogenic” on the basis that a causal link between mobile phone exposure and two types of tumour was possible based on current evidence.

This classification is often the first step towards an exposure being classified as probably or definitely carcinogenic. Indeed, some of the scientists on the panel argued that the higher level categorisation (probably carcinogenic) was already justified.

Knowing the evidence of harmful effects to be substantial, MobileWise wanted public and policy-makers to see for themselves. Our new report, endorsed by senior scientists and medics, reviews and references more than 200 peer-reviewed published studies which together point to health effects ranging from brain tumours to genetic damage and from damage to fertility to suppressed melatonin production.

This substantial evidence-base has been largely obscured in a debate played out in the media, with its tendency to simplify complex issues. The literature encompasses so many separate specialities that it hadn’t all been assembled in one place before. Even some of the scientists working in the field are not familiar with the full body of research.

However, despite the accumulating research and the decision of the World Health Organization’s scientific panel, the phone industry and governments are predictably downplaying the risks. It’s a response that is all too familiar from other cases where the scientific picture has been unclear – from tobacco to global warming. Even when the evidence of a health problem has been overwhelming, action has been delayed: some 16 years elapsed between Sir Richard Doll publishing his seminal research confirming the smoking-cancer link and warnings appearing on cigarette packets. Even then, the warnings were anodyne.

As David Michaels illustrated exhaustively in his book Doubt is their Product, the tobacco industry enthusiastically manufactured doubt as incriminating research accumulated, so as to delay regulatory action. In the light of this history of evasion, are we really going to allow ourselves to be persuaded – by the mobile operators and manufacturers, and by a Government that nets billions from mobile phone tax and licence revenue – that these devices are safe enough even for our children to use habitually?

Waiting for conclusive proof of harm is surely irresponsible when the safety steps – from using a speakerphone or headset to not carrying the phone in a trouser pocket - are so simple and can dramatically cut exposure to potentially harmful radiation.

Advice to children
When we know that children absorb twice as much radiation into their heads as adults when on a call, how acceptable is it to allow the use of mobiles by the young to go uncontrolled? The Government and manufacturers seem content to reiterate the mantra that “children should be discouraged from using phones excessively” while doing nothing to ensure that it happens. The government first issued guidance 11 years ago recommending children limit their use of mobiles but we are yet to find a child or parent aware of that advice.

The industry, confronted by an increase in the medical evidence supporting biological harm from mobiles, is sticking doggedly to its line that the risks have not been “established”. You can almost hear the wheels of the doubt-manufacture machine turning.

While industry and our Government are paying lip service to precaution, some administrations are acting. France has brought in restrictions on use in primary schools, while Israel has just launched an education programme to teach schoolchildren about the dangers of radiation exposure. Phone shops in San Francisco will soon be obliged to give out safety information.

They have not waited for absolute proof of the dangers to emerge – and neither should we.

Nine out of ten children now have a mobile phone by their eleventh birthday. Will we look back one day and be ashamed of the casual way we gave our children mobiles, just as nowadays our having given children candy cigarettes seems shocking?

Surely it is time the Government and phone industry started acknowledging what they have implicitly admitted for some time – that the safety of phone use by children is not assured – so they can start getting on with the job of protecting the next generation?
