Former WHO head attacked by Michael Repacholi for “creating fear”

Paul's Comment: Typical behavior for a psychopath.

Don’s comment: I find it interesting that Repacholi has offered to investigate Gro Brundtland! How about an investigation on Repacholi’s long standing links with industry.Simply go to the Microwave News web site’s search engine and plug in “Michael Repacholi”. For example:

Gro has created fear of mobiles in the population

The long-standing leader of the WHO program for mobile telephony and health accuses former WHO chief Gro Harlem Brundtland for creating fear in the population. The reason is her openness about her becoming sick from mobile-phone radiation.

In a Norwegian research report Brundtland is given responsibility for that many believe they are getting headaches from cell phone radiation. This comes from a documentary about the health risks of mobile telephony in the investigative magazine Plot.

Gro is not alone

From 1½ to ten percent of the population is estimated to be electrohypersensitive, in the worst case, half a million Norwegians. It’s been ten years since the former WHO Director Gro Harlem Brundtland came forward as electrohypersensitive.

“It is not the sound but the electromagnetic waves I react from. And the sensitivity has become so severe that I react to mobile phones that are closer to me than about four meters, “said Brundtland.
She was convinced it was mobile radiation that gave her headaches, and showed great understanding towards the scientists who warned of health hazards. The sensational interview went around the world, and still being discussed by scientists and NGOs.

Gro has created fear.

Michael Repacholi chaired for ten years the WHO research project on electromagnetic fields and health. It cost around 250 million dollars. None of the projects have been able to document the electromagnetic hypersensitivity. The Australian now breaks the silence in the Plot report. Asked whether he agrees that Brundtland’s statement has created fear in the population, he replied:

- I agree massively! Completely agree! That was a very unfortunate thing to say. She was the ultimate in world health, said Repacholi, adding that electromagnetic hypersensitivity is particularly common in Scandinavia.

Offered to investigate Gro

Repacholi said he was refused to send out a press release from WHO about what science really knew about electromagnetic hypersensitivity. Repacholi also says that he offered to examine the WHO chief.
- I said, “If you would like to be tested, can I obtain a laboratory. Then we can investigate this." But you know, she was three to four levels above me in the WHO. You can’t tell her anything. And she is a very strong woman. She does not like to be told that this might be something psychological, Repacholi said the magazine Plot.

-Delayed work on electromagnetic hypersensitivity

Brundtland’s initiative made the issue of electromagnetic hypersensitivity so sensitive within the WHO, that work on the subject was frozen until she quit the following year, said Repacholi.

In the book “Disconnect” (2010) by the American professor Devra Davis, it is even claimed that Repacholi went to the Board of WHO and branded Gro as crazy. An unnamed source is quoted that this incident contributed to her resignation as head of the WHO a year later.

- That’s nonsense. Complete nonsense. I would have never been able to account for the Board of WHO. Or to get a Director General fired, said Repacholi.

Norwegian researchers point to Gro-effect

Both the WHO and the Norwegian Radiation Protection Agency refer to recognized research, that can not find evidence for electromagnetic hypersensitivity. They recognize the symptoms, but not that they are caused by mobile radiation. In a study from 2008, scientist Gunnhild Oftedal and colleagues conclude that electrical hypersensitive persons expect a detrimental effect when they are talking on the mobile phone. Therefore, the effect occurs. This is called a nocebo effect. The study goes a long way in providing Brundtland’s initiative and the subsequent media coverage with a shared responsibility for the widespread fear of radiation in the population.

- It is very unfortunate that she, in her position, went out and jumped the gun with conclusions from own experiences, without having to rely on research. As head of the World Health Organization, she had easy access to such information, says Oftedal to Plot.

- Gros silence a tragedy for the world

Author Devra Davis regrets Brundtland’s ten-year silence about her electrical hypersensitivity. Via Plot, she sent the following message to her:

“It is a tragedy for the world that we have lost an important, credible voice on such a difficult topic like radiation from mobile phones. Those of us who understand the complexity and importance of the field, have a duty to speak out about what we know, what we suspect and what we need to find out.”
Brundtland has repeatedly been referred to the criticism and discussion of her in Plots documentary, but through her advisor, John Morland, has declined to comment.

- She still does not want to comment on this, says Morland to newspaper Stavanger Aftenblad.

Parents to School: 'Educate Don't Radiate'

Parents to School: 'Educate Don't Radiate'

Cell phone tower built on school's playground

Updated: Tuesday, 10 Apr 2012, 4:18 AM MST

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - How safe are cell phones, or more specifically, how safe are cell phone towers?
That's the question some valley parents asked on Monday. They say a new cell phone tower on Copper Ridge School grounds has to go and they're upset it was built in the first place.
"We live here in Silverleaf. Homes start at $2 million. We came here to live and have a safe place for our children, and now our school right across the street is selling out our kids," said parent Sam Buot.
A community meeting was held Monday at 9 a.m. about the tower, which wasn't fully installed and built without approval from the parents and school. As a result of the meeting, the Scottsdale Unified School District says the project is now on hold.
There will be no transmission coming from the tower, at least not in the immediate future.
The media was not allowed to attend the meeting between the school district and parents, citing security concerns.
According to the parents, the tower is above the kindergarten and first graders' classrooms.
There have been many studies over the years about cell phones and possible health dangers, specifically because of the electromagnetic fields -- which is how cell phones communicate with the tower. Parents at the meeting cited a bill from the Georgia legislature and some scientific discussion on the internet. They feel there could be a cancer danger from the tower.
But according to the American Cancer Society's web site, there is no cancer risk associated with cell phone towers. Nevertheless, parents want the tower down and they want it down now.
We also asked a professor of health physics at ASU.
"It is not dangerous at all. That is not to say there is no risk, but if there is one it is too small to be measured," said ASU Professor Kenneth Mossman.
"It angers me because we give a lot of money to the PTO every year. This PTO probably has more money than entire school districts and the parents are very involved, and it's like a slap in the face that none of us found this out and they kinda went behind our backs and did this," said Tonia Potyczka, a parent.
$1,200 was paid by Sprint to the SUSD every month for the privilege of putting up the tower at CRS located in the DC Ranch area. Parents who pay $2,500 for a parking space at the school scoff at that amount.

MCG to seal 298 ‘hazardous’ mobile towers near houses

MCG to seal 298 ‘hazardous’ mobile towers near houses

GURGAON: In a bizarre move, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has decided to seal all the mobile towers in its jurisdiction with immediate effect, citing health hazards.

This move is seen affecting mobile services particularly in the old city. While it's not clear what the health hazards caused by mobile towers are, this decision was taken unanimously during Friday's House meeting. There are a total of 502 mobile towers in the city out of which 298 are under the MCG's jurisdiction.

The MCG wants the mobile operators to relocate these towers from residential areas tocommercial locations. "It's a well known fact that the radiation from these towers causes deadly diseases like cancer and we want to ensure the safety of our residents. There are hundreds of mobile towers in residential areas and in case somebody gets affected by this radiation everybody will blame us for it," said mayor Vimal Yadav.

According to Yadav, mobile operators have to pay Rs 2.5 lakh per tower annually to the municipality, but they have not done so in the past three years.

Communications tower in Kirkland backyard sparks neighbours' complaints

Communications tower in Kirkland backyard sparks neighbours' complaints

A communications tower erected in a Kirkland backyard has raised the ire of nearby residents.

Several homeowner who live on Acres St., a residential street between Brunswick and De Salaberry Blvds., came to the Kirkland council meeting Monday armed with a petition. They were seekanswers from the city about the tower, which they say was erected without any notice last Tuesday in the backyard of 75 Acres.

"It's a health hazard," Laurinda Diaz told council. "Not only is it a monstrosity, it's concerning. I want it gone today."

Mayor John Meaney said the city only became aware of the tower when contacted by residents last Thursday.

Director general Joe Sanalitro said he plans to contact Rogers Communications and Industry Canada regarding the new tower.
He said any communications installation under 15 metres, such as the one on Acres, does not require a public consultation meeting under federal guidelines. Normally, companies contact the city to negotiate where a tower is to be erected, he said.

Sanalitro said the city will look into possible fines for not having a work permit or if they can legally force Rogers to take down the tower. The city has promised to set up a meeting with concerned residents.

The owner of the property could not be reached for comment.

Switzerland: Waves from Wireless Communication: Physicians for the Environment Requests Strict Application of the Precautionary Principle
Basel, 22 March 2012
Press Release from Physicians for the Environment (MfE – Switzerland)

Mobile Telephony :  MfE requests stricter limit values

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) considers the waves emitted by wireless communication “possibly carcinogenic”.  According to the IARC, the risk of cancer for this type of radiation is thus similar to that of the insecticide DDT, rightly banned.  Physicians for the Environment (MfE) is concerned that the limit values expected to protect the Swiss population, notably vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant women, constitute insufficient protection.  In a communication sent to the Federal Assembly, MfE thus requests strict application of the principle of precaution and – in view of the risk of cancer – lower limit values.

Children’s rooms, housing, trams or offices are experiencing a growing exposure to radiation from diverse sources:  babyphones, mobile telephony, wifi, etc., yet more and more studies warn against the serious health consequences of electromagnetic pollution for human beings and animals.

Cataracts in calves, Alzheimer’s Disease, cancer …

Since 2001, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) considered that magnetic fields emitted notably from current lines could be carcinogenic.  A 2008 Swiss study postulates increased risk of contracting Alzheimer’s Disease for residents living near power lines.  Other studies on the risk of brain tumors establish a higher risk for this pathology in the case of mobile phone use.  This is why the IARC, part of the United Nations, considered in 2011 that waves from mobile telephony are “possibly carcinogenic”.  In 2012, the University of Zürich noted a 10 times higher prevalence of blindness from birth (cataracts) in calves during the duration of operation of a relay antenna installed on a stable.

Strict application of the precautionary principle, lowering of limit values
“From the medical point of view, it is urgent to apply the precautionary principle for mobile telephony, wifi, power lines, etc.” states Dr. Peter Kälin, President of Physicians for the Environment.  The Austrian Medical Chamber has moreover just formulated the same requirement in regard to smart meters.  In a communication dated 16 March 2012 to the Federal Council of the Federal Assembly, Physicians for the Environment requested to divide the value limits by 10.  Dr. Yvonne Gilli, National Councillor, has repeated the demands of the MfE in requesting the Federal Council, if it has to protect the population, to apply the precautionary principle and to lower limit values.

Founded 25 years ago, the association of Physicians for the Environment (MfE) joins together around 1,500 physicians in Switzerland.

Nassau County Neighbors Fight Cell Tower Construction

Nassau County Neighbors Fight Cell Tower Construction

Security guards, police called in as work on huge "cell tower next door" in a residential neighborhood nears end
By Greg Cergol|  Thursday, Mar 29, 2012  |  Updated 12:34 PM EDT

Final construction work has begun on a controversial 127-foot cell tower in the Nassau County village of Manorhaven, with security guards and police shielding workers from residents angry about what they say is an eyesore. The tower is located on village property in the middle of a residential neighborhood, just 30 feet from Erin Ryan's kitchen window.
"Every time I look out my window, I just get tears in my eyes," said Ryan, an NYPD cop now battling cancer. "I can't believe this is going on right now."

Ryan has only lived in the rented home a few months, but is already planning to move out.  Her neighbors, however, have vowed to continue a fight that began four years ago.
"It's an insult to our intelligence and an insult to our neighborhood," said lifelong Manorhaven resident Joe Giunta.

Giunta and his neighbors have lobbied local lawmakers to stop the cell tower project after losing separate lawsuits in state and federal court.

Beyond the eyesore, they argue that the cell tower is dangerous.

"We're worried about health risks," said Giunta. "There are a lot of kids on the block and we don't know what kind of health risk we're at."

Manorhaven's village board approved construction of the cell tower at the site of a village sewer pumping station in 2008, but then tried to stop construction a year later.

The cell tower company, AG Towers of West Babylon, sued, and late last year, a federal judge sided with the company and cleared the way for construction.

Last week, in a last effort to stop the project, the Manorhaven village board sent the cell tower company a letter offering to relinquish all rights under the lease and refund the $117,000 in lease payments.

"AG Towers answered that when its trucks rolled down our street Tuesday," said village clerk Jonathan Fielding.

"Where the developer has chosen to locate the tower, it's too close to residential homes," he added.

The lawyer for AG Towers, William Wexler, deflected the criticism.

"We built the tower where the village told us to build it," said Wexler. "They picked the location. We followed the letter of the law."

No member of the Manorhaven village board that approved the tower construction could be reached for comment.

Two current trustees, including Deputy Mayor John Di Leo, were among those who supported the long-term lease deal with the cell tower company.  AG Towers shareholders include former Suffolk County executive Patrick Halpin, Wexler confirmed.
