Cable operators will fight off 5G with 10-gigabit cable modems




The cable TV industry — represented by the Internet and Television Association (NCTA), CableLabs, and Cable Europe— has introduced the industry’s plans to adopt 10G, or 10-gigabit-per-second data networks, as a way to compete with the onset of 5G wireless networks.

Competition is spurring the cable companies to ramp up from today’s 1-gigabit-per-second cable modems to 10 gigabits per second and beyond in the coming years. Hopefully, this will mean that we’ll all be able to jack into The Matrix soon.

5G, which promises to enable wireless data transfer in the gigabits per second, is no doubt scaring wired internet providers, like cable and phone companies. That is likely why I have a download speed of 174.8 megabits per second and upload speed of 5.3 megabits per second today. CableLabs said the industry has moved from 4 percent of homes at a gigabit a second in 2016 to 80 percent in 2018.

To support the rollout, Intel will deliver 10-gigabit-ready technology from the network infrastructure to home gateways.

Cable operators in the U.S., whose networks currently pass 90 percent of homes, including Comcast, Charter, Cox, MediaCom, and Midco — plus international operators, including Rogers, Shaw, Vodafone, Taiwan Broadband Communications, Telecom Argentina, Liberty Global, and more — are implementing the new 10G initiative.

Lab trials are already underway, and field trials are beginning in 2020.

“With groundbreaking, scalable capacity and speeds, the 10G platform is the wired network of the future that will power the digital experiences and imaginations of consumers for years to come,” said Michael Powell, president of the NCTA, in a statement. “As an industry, we are dedicated to delivering an exceptional national infrastructure that will power digital advancement and propel our innovation economy into the future.”

The foundation of 10G is already proven, with cable networks offering 1-gigabit service today across 80 percent of the U.S., up from just 5 percent in 2016. Similar gigabit services are available from cable operators across the world. Ultimately, 10G will deliver symmetrical speeds that are up to 10 times faster than today’s fastest networks.

Built using a capital-efficient approach and leveraging the expansive cable networks already deployed throughout much of North America, Europe, and Asia, the 10G network will seamlessly support a wide variety of immersive digital services and applications, the cable companies said.
On the path to accomplishing 10G, internet providers will continue to upgrade their networks with a combination of technologies that currently exist, alongside the ongoing advancements of new hardware, software, and techniques that are being developed and tested by technologists and vendors.

10G’s promise of faster speeds, more capacity, lower latency, and greater security will enable and help fully realize a wide variety of new services and applications that will change the way millions of consumers, educators, businesses, and innovators interact with the world.

CableLabs said the 10G platform will create new possibilities for smart cities, health care, connected gaming, video streaming, virtual and augmented reality, education, and businesses of all sizes.

The 10G platform promises improved security, seamless connectivity, reliability, increased capacity, and, as the name would imply, up to 10-gigabit-per-second speeds, the companies said.

The group will talk about the 10G platform at CES 2019 in a talk called “The Future of the Broadband Network” at The Four Seasons on Wednesday, January 9 at 9 a.m., Pacific.

Activist Post, sister publication Natural Blazeand countless organizations and individuals have posted information online about why people want to keep utility “Smart” Meters off their homes, out of their communities, and out of their states.  So many problems have been reportedabout “Smart” Meters that a documentary was released about them in 2013, Take Back Your Power.  It was updated in 2017 and is now free to watch online.

“Smart” Meters have been linked worldwideto fires, explosions, inaccurate (and inflated) measurementsand billing, malfunctioning and breaking appliances, healthissues, environmentalissues, cybersecurityissues, and privacy violations.  Original analog meters weren’t associated with these problems and they lasted – on average – 40 years.  “Smart” Meters have to be replaced anywhere between 1-10 years.  “Smart” Meters are dumb– and we’re not the first to say it either.

Unfortunately“Smart” Meters are very profitable to utility companies.  They allow them to collect our utility usage data 24/7so they can sell it to 3rdparties.  That’s why utility companies are fighting so hard to keep them installed – regardless of all the problems.

Utah lawmaker wants to crack down on cell phones in schools, says too many exposed to porn


A Utah lawmaker wants to crack down on cell phone use in classrooms.
Rep. Susan Pulsipher, R-South Jordan, says every school district needs to have a policy in place when it comes to the use of electronic devices at school, and she says they need to make sure teachers, students and parents are trained on it.
So, she introduced HB 237 on the house floor on Friday.
“We want to make sure that all the students know what that policy is and know what happens if they don’t follow the policy,” said Pulsipher. “Certainly it can be a distraction in the classroom.”
But Pulsipher says this bill is not just about putting an end to distractions for teachers. She says it came about as a result of students downloading and viewing inappropriate material.
She says school WiFi networks used to filter that, but now kids don’t use the school's WiFi.
“Technology has changed and with that change has come personal devices students bring and they don’t connect to the WiFi at school so they don’t have those filters,” she said. “There are too many reports of students being exposed to pornography in schools from someone's cell phone. That was one of the primary reasons this came about.”
The bill is just at the very beginning stages and is expected to go before a committee meeting next.

Last month, a major review of cell phone cancer risks appeared in the Annual Review of Public Health. The authors would have us believe that cell phones do not present a cancer risk.

In the course of digging into the text and supporting documents, I came across some striking contradictions, as well as some serious omissions. They give me pause about the paper's conclusions and the motives at work.

I believe that a major objective of the review is to cast doubt on IARC's classification of RF as a possible human carcinogen, and by extension empower the WHO and ICNIRP to sidestep precaution.

Insufficient sleep could damage your DNA and genes, study finds

Considering that one of the main health complaints from people who have a smart meter located close to bedroom areas is insomnia, a case could be raised that in such cases smart meter emissions may damage DNA and increase the risk of cancer.

Research conducted on doctors who worked long, overnight shifts, and results may apply to those in other jobs with similar working patterns. Adults aged between 18 and 60 need at least seven hours of sleep per night

Sleep deprivation can damage DNA and the body’s ability to repair this, possibly leading to higher chances of genetic diseases such as cancer, a study has found.

The University of Hong Kong research, which looked into the effects of sleep deprivation on local doctors, found that those who needed to work overnight shifts had a higher level of damage in their DNA, as well as lower levels of gene activity associated with DNA repair.

The study was among the first to examine such effects on humans, particularly on younger adults.

“This is a very preliminary study, but [there is] an indication that sleep disruption is not good for you, and not good for your genes,” said Dr Gordon Wong Tin-chun, co-author of the study and an associate professor at HKU’s department of anaesthesiology.

DNA damage means a change in the basic structure of genetic instructions for cell growth and functions in organisms, and this alteration is not repaired when the molecule is replicated.
Wong said DNA damage and lower repair ability could bring bigger health implications.

“[Such conditions] may increase chances of developing diseases from genetic mutations such as cancers,” he said.

Wong said the findings of the study might also be applicable to people who had working patterns that were similar to the doctors who pulled irregular overnight shifts.

The findings have recently been published in medical journal Anaesthesia.
Researchers looked at 49 healthy, full-time doctors from two local public hospitals. Among them, 24 had to work overnight on-site calls, with most of them required to take five to six such calls per month. An overnight on-site call means a doctor has to work from late afternoon to early morning the next day.
The remaining 25 doctors in the study were not required to take such calls.
Blood samples were taken from all participants after three days of adequate sleep. Additional blood was sampled from those who had to work overnight. Blood from these respondents was drawn the following morning, after sleep deprivation.


Researchers found that in general doctors on overnight calls had 30 per cent higher DNA breaks, a type of DNA damage, compared with those on regular hours.

This DNA damage was further increased by more than 25 per cent after a night of acute sleep deprivation. Doctors with insufficient sleep were also found to have lower levels of gene activity associated with DNA repair.

But the mechanism on why inadequate sleep could lead to such damage remained unclear in the study.

Wong said they hoped to raise more awareness among the public about the importance of sleep.

“Maybe you should consider looking into your [sleep habits] and treating sleep with a bit more respect,” he said.


The recommended hours of sleep for people vary across age groups. An adult aged between 18 and 60 would need at least seven hours of sleep per night, according to the website of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
Professor Michael Irwin, head of HKU’s department of anaesthesiology and an editor of the journal, said the impacts of sleep deprivation were not only physical but psychological, and they could also affect judgment.

“For doctors working at night and dealing with very technical things like anaesthesia or surgery, we should really try to minimise the amount of procedures done overnight,” Irwin said.

What to consider before going off the grid

"There are a lot of options available, more than people generally think of," says Daniel Connell, a designer who shares open-source, low-cost alternative energy plans and tutorials on his website OpenSourceLowTech.

"An offgrid home is designed for low electrical draw," Betz says.

Betz estimates that for "just a few lights and charging a laptop," you could set up an off-grid energy system for between $1,000 and $3,000, but a system for a small homestead usually costs somewhere between $5,000 and $7,000. A back-up generator will cost an additional $500 to $5,000 depending on its capacity.

"Most systems we sell for a full-time off-grid household start around $10,000," Betz says. "We don't do a lot above $20,000." Even so, budget matters. "The people that really struggle are the ones on a really tight budget who can't afford the system they need," he adds.
