OFFICIALS and residents of Barangay Apas, Cebu City asked Mayor Michael Rama to order the demolition of cellular sites of two telecommunication companies in Sitio Calvary Hills.
They pointed out that the two-month grace period given by the City Council for Globe Telecom Inc. and Digitel Mobile Philippines Inc. to remove the cellular towers will lapse on July 27.
Barangay officials and residents were represented by village chief Ramil Ayuman, who wrote Rama a letter. In the letter, Ayuman cited the May 27 City Council resolution that gave Globe Telecom and Digitel Mobile, which operates Sun Cellular, two months to dismantle their mobile communications facilities.
The resolution revoked the special permit issued to Globe and Sun following the complaint of some residents at Sitio Calvary Hills.
The Calvary Hills Apas Residents’ Organization (Charo) said that since 2000, 25 neighbors have died of cancer. Five residents died last year. 
In a separate letter to the mayor, Charo president Porponio Lapa Jr. said that the demolition order be enforced to “spare them (residents) from mental anguish.”
Globe chief legal counsel Froilan Castelo earlier said that cell sites as cause of cancer is “largely urban myth.” 
Dr. Agnette Peralta, head of the Bureau of Health Devices and Technology of the Department of Health, said that international studies have not found conclusive evidence to show that exposure to radio frequency radiation, such as those from cellular sites, can cause cancer.

Protect Vulnerable Populations: RELOCATE the University of Calgary Cell Phone Tower Away from Daycare

Telus will activate a Cell Phone Tower on August 31, 2015. It is located 84 meters away from the UCCC daycare. Within the City of Calgary's siting protocols it is recommended that towers are placed at a minimum distance of 100 meters away, but Telus chooses not to follow this recommendation. The University of Calgary owns the land and they are fine with ignoring the City's recommendation as well. To add insult to injury, the tower went up without any prior notification or consultation with parents and staff members. If we were residents, we would have been notified beforehand. But, we are simply occupants.
Why does it matter? This sets a dangerous precedent for future tower placement within the city. We need to protect vulnerable populations.
After reviewing research, it is clear to me that there is doubt within the scientific community, regarding the safety of long-term exposure to Radio Frequency Fields. The World Health Organization has placed a high priority on further research; however, at the present time the research results are contentious, inconsistent, and of mixed quality. The necessary and extensive research needed to determine the long-term effects of childhood exposure to cell phone tower radiation simply does not yet exist. While Health Canada strives to protect the public, it is clearly acknowledged within Safety Code 6 (SC6) that the "technology is advancing rapidly and where unexpected and unique exposure scenarios may occur, this code cannot cover all possible situations" (SC6 Preface, 2015). At the request of Health Canada, the Royal Society of Canada assembled an expert panel to conduct a review of SC6 to determine whether the code was consistent with scientific literature in setting limits that would protect the public from adverse health risks. The expert panel concluded that additional time and research would be required “for a more thorough assessment of the possibility of a causal connection between cancer and the RF energy” (Demers, P. et al., 2014, p. 82-83). Furthermore, the House of Commons Report of the Standing Committee on Health of Canadians, released in June 2015, indicates the need for further research and precautionary measures.
Any scientific uncertainty regarding the safety of cell phone towers will become an ethical issue / public relations issue when the tower is placed within close proximity to a vulnerable population.  Our UCCC West daycare population mostly consists of three month old babies to five year old children who spend 40-50 hours a week at the daycare. With this in mind, I would respectfully ask that the University of Calgary and Telus exercise the Precautionary Principle and relocate the tower.
If Telus is willing to relocate a tower because of  “...an overwhelming request to have the tower moved to another location where it would less visible from residential homes” (Karen Dolan, Manager - Real Estate and Government Affairs, Telus), then I am hopeful that they will relocate the tower at the request of UCCC West Daycare parents and staff.

These smart trash cans are solar powered, can detect how full and smelly they are, and will soon offer Wi-Fi.
Garbage cans are the latest previously un-smart objects to become Wi-Fi-enabled.
Waste management company Bigbelly equipped two of its smart bins with wireless internet in downtown Manhattan last winter, providing 50 to 75 megabits per second. That's fast enough to download an HD movie in nine minutes, or upload 200 photos in about 27 seconds.
The company now wants to turn more of its several hundred garbage and recycling bins in New York City into Wi-Fi hotspots. Bigbelly is applying for a grant from the Mayor's Office to install the Wi-Fi garbage cans in underserved neighborhoods. The company also plans to conduct more pilot tests this year, and fully deploy units in the fall if they get Board approval. Other North American cities will soon have their own wireless trash cans, too.
Bigbelly's bins were already pretty smart — they're solar powered, have sensors to detect how full and smelly they are, notify trash collectors when it's time to empty them, and some can automatically compact the trash when they're getting too full. Adding Wi-Fi to garbage cans on the street level means wireless signals aren't blocked by skyscrapers, either.
New York City payphones are also being replaced with Wi-Fi enabled "Links," which offer free charging stations, free domestic calls, and a tablet with city info. The first Links will go live by the end of this year, and eventually 10,000 of them will be installed across the five boroughs — thousands of which will offer free Wi-Fi.

How are all these services free? Both the payphones and garbage cans will display advertising, of course. CityBridge, the consortium managing the Links, estimates ad revenue will net the city $500 million in the first 12 years. By then, you'll probably never have to go anywhere that doesn't have Wi-Fi.

An eyebrow-raising report in Fusion relays that a growing number of Apple Watchusers are complaining that Apple’s new wearable is so hot, it’s actually burning their skin.
In one particular example, a woman with an Apple Watch Sport removed her device mid-workout after feeling a burning sensation at the top of her wrist. Upon removal, she was startled to see blisters forming on her skin.
Subsequently, she posted the following photo to Twitter.
While this doesn’t seem to be a widespread issue by any means, Fusion highlights a few other photos from Apple Watch users who experienced something similar. For instance, one Apple Watch wearer posted the following photo just about two weeks ago.
Now to be fair, it’s essentially impossible to categorize a little skin discoloration as a burn based on photos alone. After all, it’s entirely possible that some users with similar complaints are simply experiencing rashes or irritations due to adverse skin reactions.
While Apple reportedly refused to comment officially on the matter, Fusion does note that Apple’s Apple Watch support does list a few skin problems that might result from wearing Apple’s wearable.
On its support website, Apple notes that the watch can cause skin irritation for a couple of reasons, among them allergies to materials in the watch or a poor fit. Apple says that a too-loose band, for example, can cause irritation from constant friction between the watch and skin.
As for the woman who felt a burning sensation coupled with blisters, Apple has offered to give her a brand new device.

The internet is already a threat to quiet contemplation – but could the internet of things herald a return to solitude?

Solitude has long been the condition for inspiration. John the Baptist fled to the desert; Descartes retreated to his fireside; Mahler took refuge in his lakeside cabin. Through solitude, religious, intellectual or creative enlightenment can be reached. As Nietzsche said: “How can anyone become a thinker if he does not spend at least a third of the day without passions, people and books?”
Solitude involves some degree of social withdrawal, but it is not necessarily a state of loneliness. “I have never found a companion that was so companionable as solitude,” declared Thoreau; the philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer describes it as friendship with oneself. Solitude may be enjoyed “in the midst of cities and the courts of kings”, as French philosopher Montaigne observed in the 16th century – but, he said, “it is enjoyed more handily alone”.

Solitude under threat

The internet makes physical isolation easier than ever: we can work, shop and be entertained without ever leaving our bedrooms. But withdrawing from society is a different matter. Social media is so habit-forming that Facebook has its ownaddiction scale. And as we scroll, like, click and share our way through each day’s digital maelstrom, we are left with precious little energy for creative thought. Laptops and smartphones can be turned off, at least – but what about the internet of things?
The network of networks becomes accessible through any physical object: fromcars, to umbrellas, to potted plants. But when the internet escapes from behind a screen, the world becomes a far more distracting place.
Notifications appear on our dressing tables, sofas and kitchen cabinets. The flood of emails becomes a deluge as our household appliances get in on the act. We arenudged, manipulated and spied upon in our own homes. If the internet of screens put solitude on the endangered species list, it looks like the internet of things guarantees its extinction.
Would Mahler have written two symphonies at Steinbach if his desk had a built-in touchscreen? Would Christianity have turned out differently if John the Baptist’s desert sojourn had been interrupted by recipe tips for locusts and wild honey? And what if, instead of lowering himself into his battered Queen Anne to ponder the foundations of knowledge, Descartes had relaxed into a shapeshifting smart armchair – which, upon detecting his contemplative mood, promptly transformed itself into a chaise longue?

The fear of boredom

But it’s not the internet of things that is the true threat to solitude. It’s not even the more familiar “internet of screens”. The real hazard is our own anxiety – but this trepidation is not the dread of loneliness. It’s the fear of being bored.
In a lecture course that he delivered in 1929-30, the German philosopher Martin Heidegger identified boredom as the defining mood of the 20th century. Whereas the Romantics were enraptured with the world, modern people simply shrug at it. This ubiquitous, insidious ennui plucks at our sleeves– but technology steps in, and we bury our boredom under a heap of gadgets.
In a technologically saturated world, Heidegger argues that we never truly inhabit time: we either manage it or while it away. The physical world is treated as a “standing reserve” of resources to be plundered by the onward march of innovation. The distractions of technology must be resisted, for Heidegger – but doing so requires embracing solitude, which means confronting boredom. The road is hard, but the alternative is worse. “He who completely entrenches himself against boredom also entrenches himself against himself,” warns Nietzsche: “he will never get to drink the strongest refreshing draught from his own innermost fountain.”

Solitude in the internet of things

Even though Heidegger thought that technology was fundamentally aimed at distraction and self-avoidance, it doesn’t have to be. Technology does what we design it to do. And the internet of things could help us in our search for solitude.

In the homes of the future, the mundane tasks that can interrupt concentration – regulating the heating, or taking out the bins – could be fully automated. But smarthomes are only the start. Because the internet of things could help us not just to connect more objects, but also to disconnect ourselves when we need space to think.
Studies have shown that even spotting a notification on a smartphone is distracting. So what if all home offices were equipped with physical kill-switches for notifications, which could mute all but the most urgent messages? And what if we could work not on multi-function laptops, where the temptations of the internet are just a new browser window away, but on smart typewriters with only minimal email connectivity? The homes of the future could be like the great houses of the past, run discreetly and efficiently by considerate butlers – quiet havens where the need for solitude and privacy is respected, rather than disregarded by default.

Rethinking the internet means rethinking ourselves

As the boundary between the physical and the digital grows increasingly blurred, imagining the internet of tomorrow just becomes an exercise in envisioning the future. Do we want to march onwards as mindless consumers – avaricious, fearful and jealous of our peers? Or do we want to reclaim creative space, gather our wits and face the world carefully, thoughtfully and with curiosity?
Montaigne thought that the most admirable way to live was not to seek to own more, to do more, or to be more. “The greatest thing in the world,” he wrote, “is to know how to belong to ourselves.” The internet of things doesn’t have to usher in the death of solitude. On the contrary: it could herald its return.

PORTLAND, Maine — The final say on the public health risks of “smart meters” lies with the state supreme court.
After opponents of a Maine Public Utilities Commission decision on the safety of the electricity meters filed an appeal with the Supreme Judicial Court in May, the PUC and Central Maine Power Co., the utility that covers most of western Maine, filed opinions with the court defending the PUC ruling.
At issue are the alleged health risks caused by the radio-frequency radiation emitted by CMP’s smart meters, which transmit usage information wirelessly between a customer’s home and the utility.
Opponents argue that the effects of exposure to continual low-level radiation range from nausea to cancer.
But in December 2014, the PUC ruled that smart meters do not “present a credible threat to the health and safety of CMP’s customers.”
The decision came after a 2 ½-year investigation into the alleged health risks of the meters, with significant input from both CMP and the opponents Ed Friedman and the Maine Coalition to Stop Smart Meters.
Friedman appealed the PUC’s December ruling to the high court in May, arguing that a PUC decision “can be vacated when it is unreasonable, unjust, or unlawful in light of the record.”
Friedman and other appellants point to what they see as a conflict in the PUC’s written ruling.
The PUC is made up of three commissioners, appointed by the governor. The smart meter decision reflected the decision of Commissioners Mark Vannoy and David Littell, since then-Chairman Tom Welch recused himself on the basis of prior employment with CMP.
Although the final ruling states no credible threat of harm, in Littell’s individual opinion, he wrote “If limited RF… exposure is recommended by a doctor or medical practitioners, I would address the pending complaint by allowing for a … (meter to be) turned off at the ratepayer’s primary residence at no cost.”
Friedman and the coalition argue that this statement acknowledges a safety risk associated with smart meters and that the opt-out rate – currently $40 up front and $12 per month to continue – is an unfair burden.
Both the PUC and CMP filed briefs with the court on June 30, standing by the original decision.
Attorneys for the PUC said that despite different “analytical” approaches, commissioners Littell and Vannoy reach the same conclusion of no threat of harm.
“Mr. Friedman would have the Court focus on this one clause and allow it to overshadow the entire seven-page section of Commissioner Littell’s concurrence … where (he) discusses medical opt-outs,” they argue.
The PUC also maintains that their more than two-year investigation into the arguments of both sides, as well as a significant review of scientific literature, shows the decision is based on “substantial evidence in the record.”
CMP’s brief, filed after the commission’s, said the court should not even agree to hear the case, arguing that the jurisdiction is federal.
The Federal Communication Commission sets guidelines for RF radiation from devices like cell phones, Wi-Fi, and smart meters, and thus the “only relevant information” the PUC had authority to consider was if CMP’s smart meters met these guidelines, CMP argues.
Based on field studies conducted by the utility, the PUC found that emissions from smart meters are well below FCC standards.
“Appellants argue that the PUC and now the Court should look behind the FCC standards and conclude that the FCC standards are insufficient,” the opinion states. “Neither the PUC nor the Court has the capacity or, more importantly, the authority to do what Appellants request.”
Friedman and the coalition filed a final reply brief with the court July 14.
Bruce McGlauflin, attorney for the Friedman and the coalition, made an analogy to the legal battles over the safety of smoking in the 1960s, “when there was evidence but no scientific consensus, conclusive proof, or ‘known’ threat of cancer from cigarette smoking,” he said.
He argues that the situation with RF radiation may be even worse, saying “(companies) were not pumping cigarette smoke into people’s homes or charging them a monthly fee to avoid it.”
In an interview Monday, Friedman pointed to recent publications documenting radio-frequency radiation, including an article in the journal Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine documenting cell damage due to low-intensity RF radiation.
“If these things don’t present a credible threat, I don’t know what does,” he said.
The court will soon begin its August recess, so oral arguments are not expected to be scheduled until the fall, Friedman said.
