Wireless technology: Are we ignoring potential health risks?
Can living near telco towers pose health risks such as cancer? Several studies claim to show that it might be possible, although there has yet to be any concrete evidence on the matter.

EVER wondered if radiation coming from wireless devices like mobile phones and telecommunication towers is really harmful to us?

A small group of Malaysians claim to have found evidence that overexposure to these devices, which all emitelectromagnetic radiation(EMR) waves, could lead to various health problems.

For several years now, members of this group have been campaigning against telco towers being too near our neighbourhoods and schools, most notably the 1BestariNet project to provide internet for students in classes.

Astro AWANIspoke to experts from this group who have recently broken significant ground in their research into the subject. We also interviewed activists as well as those who claim to be able to immediately feel the effects of EMR waves. Lastly, we asked the government (Education Ministry) how it plans to tackle this issue.

What did the experts say?

Having personally seen several patients with some inexplicable symptoms, Dr Adlina Suleiman, an associate professor from MARA University of Technology (UiTM) and Dr Thor Teong Gee, a general practitioner, has been conducting several independent studies on the subject of EMR from telco towers.

So far, theirlatest findings seem quite scary: Those who have been living near to telco towers indicated a higher chance of getting headaches, giddiness, insomnia, loss of memory, diarrhea, mental slowness, reduced reaction time and mood swings.

They alsofound that more cases of cancer happensto those who live less than a few hundred metres away from these towers, concluding that one would have a higher risk of developing cancer after being exposed to EMR for years.

Dr Adlina, who noted the2011 World Health Organization (WHO) report in which radiofrequency electromagnetic fields were classified as "possibly carcinogenic to humans", said they are heading to Johor next to collect more data after conducting three studies – namely in Subang, Perak, and Penang.

While she admitted that the scientific community worldwide has not conclusively found causal relationship between EMR and illnesses, she argued that it took scientists some 40 years to find evidence that smoking tobacco can cause cancer.

"If you want to wait for clear evidence on the negative effects of EMR that only you are able prove that EMR will definitely cause something bad then we will do something about telco towers, then it may already be too late. Some people already have (health) problems," said the doctor, adding that definitive prove can be obtained as soon as animal tests were done.

A victim's cautionary tale

There were others who shared the fears of Dr Adlina and Dr Thor over EMR, and one of them had a first-person experience from its 'harmful' effects.

Lily Law claimed that she and her son, Elton, 9, were considered 'hypersensitive' to electronics and would "immediately" feel the effects of EMR waves almost as soon as they go near them, regardless of whether it comes from wireless internet devices or telco lines.

Law's skin gets highly irritated, red, and itchy when she gets near wireless or telco devices, while her son would become more hyperactive and in more severe cases, complain of headaches.

"Actually, the doctor also doesn't know why my skin is like this. It's very itchy sometimes. Every day, I need to take medicine to control my skin problem.

"After I use cable (services) to connect my computer, now it's not so bad," she said, claiming that the effects can be felt within five minutes of being in a room with high levels of EMR.

 
While the conditions she and her son have are only shared by a few others she knew, Law noted that some researchers believe that by2017, 50% of the population worldwide could be ‘hypersensitive’ like her.

The 'anti radiation' campaign

Also on a mission to reach out to more Malaysians and get the authorities to act on this controversial issue is thePenang EMF (Electromagnetic Fields) Protection Alliance. The group, part of the national levelAnti EMF Radiation Allianceas well as theInternational EMF Alliance, has been voicing out on the dangers of telco towers since 2008.

"We are not at all saying we have to avoid all these communication technologies, but we have to consider the safety and health of our beloved families first," its secretary, Ong Bee Lay, said.

Ong's group has asked for the government, especially the Education Ministry, to take them more seriously: they want the authorities to change things at the policy stage so that guidelines on protecting people against dangers of radiation are more stringent.

Policy researcher Lim Jit Lee toldAstro AWANIthat other countries have laws that cover public health issues but Malaysia was lacking in this regard.

"We don’t want to argue whether it is safe or not. Because, if you want to say that studies are not strong enough to prove direct effect, the thing is, nobody can guarantee that it is safe for our children either at this moment," Lee argued.

She said given the evidence shown by the local studies so far, the burden of proof that EMR technologies are safe should fall on providers and producers, not on the consumers.

Teacher activist Mohd Nor Izzat Mohd Johari of Suara Guru Masyarakat Malaysia (SGMM) has also asked the government to review the 1BestariNet project, especially in terms of complaints on speed issues.

Mohd Nor Izzat questioned if it was ethical for the towers, built by YTL Communications, to also be providing Wi-Fi services for residents outside of school compounds.

What is the government's stance?

The government is aware that it has come under scrutiny, especially after announcing its plan in 2012 to install 10,000 telco towers in schools nationwide under the 1BestariNet project.

Touted to enable "every child the opportunity to access quality education at any time, from anywhere and according to his or her own pace", the project is supposed to provide schools with broadband internet connectivity and Virtual Learning Environment.

Education Ministry's Educational Technology Division director, Rosnani Mohamed Ali, said the various agencies are constantly monitoring 1BestariNet and its safety is at the forefront.

"From the studies we've done, we want to assure the teachers, students and parents that these towers are not dangerous to health… we follow all specifications.

"It is actually no more dangerous for a child to be in school with a 1BestariNet tower than to be in a school that has TV and radio coverage," Rosnani toldAstro AWANI, stressing that the 1BestariNet towers emit lower waves than other telco towers around Malaysia.

However, she assured that the ministry will take into account independent studies that are being done, and will review its performance periodically in all aspects.

What have the other agencies said so far?

A 1996 study by an ad-hoc committee consisting of government agencies such as the Health Ministry and several universities had concluded that there were no concrete proof to show that exposure to EMR would have any health effects or defects.

Malaysian Nuclear Agency radiation safety and health division manager, Dr Wan Saffiey Wan Abdullah was reported to have said there was no proof that emission from telco towers, which he said were lower than mobile phones, could cause illness to people nearby.

"We did not carry out studies on the effect of electromagnetic radiation on people but we adopted data used in the United States, Europe and China," he had said during a dialogue with residents in Muar.

However, Dr Wan Saffiey admitted that there were people who were "electro-sensitive" to radiation from mobile phones, towers and Wi-Fi who could become ill. But the number was very small.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had also reportedly assured people that telco towers in Malaysia were well within international safety levels.

What's next?

Although there has yet to be any conclusive, 100% proof linking EMR to health effects, the work from the Malaysian group who are using their own funds to study the subject seems to be getting somewhere.

Rightly, they should not be ignored.

The 1BestariNet project is of special concern as it involves the health of young, studying children, and the government is now expected to keep to its word that it would do further studies on its possible health risks.

But what if our worst fears were true, that it could really cause cancer?

There is nothing that the government, private entities and Malaysians would lose for finding out more through scientific studies. It would certainly only help us ensure that we could protect our next generation, one way or another.

A "burgeoning, multibillion-dollar surveillance industry" is making technology available to governments around the world that lets them "track the movements of almost anybody who carries a cell phone, whether they are blocks away or on another continent," aWashington Posinvestigation shows.

On Sunday, the Post reported that these surveillance systems, which vendors are marketing to government agencies overseas, exploit "an essential fact of all cellular networks: They must keep detailed, up-to-the-minute records on the locations of their customers to deliver calls and other services to them."

Users of the technology are able to type a phone number into a computer system, which in turn employs information from cellular carriers like AT&T or Verizon—such as what cell tower the target is currently using—to pinpoint a person's location "to within a few blocks in an urban area or a few miles in a rural one."

Such spying practices are nothing new in the U.S. and other technologically developed countries, national tech reporter Craig Timberg notes in his report.
The world’s most powerful intelligence services, such as the National Security Agency and Britain’s GCHQ, long have used cellphone data to track targets around the globe. But experts say these new systems allow less technically advanced governments to track people in any nation—including the United States—with relative ease and precision.
The technology could also be employed by hackers, criminal gangs, or nations under sanctions, Timberg writes.

Private surveillance vendors benefit from the fact that such location-targeting pings are virtually impossible to detect—or curtail—given that the global cellular network serves billions of phones and devices.

According to the Post, "Telecommunications experts say networks have become so complex that implementing new security measures to defend against these surveillance systems could cost billions of dollars and hurt the functioning of basic services, such as routing calls, texts and Internet to customers."

An FCC spokesperson told the Post such systems "could fall into the category of technologies" that will be further looked into by an internal task force.

The London-based advocacy group Privacy International says the global surveillance industry is estimated at $5 billion a year.

Hanni Fakhoury, staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, will be speaking this fall about how domestic law enforcement in the U.S. is using similar technology—and how criminal defense attorneys can uncover and challenge such surveillance.
"The Post article highlights just how invasive and revealing cell phone tracking has become," Fakhoury tells Common Dreams. "While it's right to question how foreign governments are using the technology we should also be paying close attention to which law enforcement agencies in the U.S. are purchasing and using similar equipment and the legal process by which they do so. There's been a lot of obfuscation on the part of U.S. agencies on that point and we them to be more forthright with the public about how and when they use such technologies."

Electromagnetic radiation from cell phonesThe testicular proteome of the rat is modified by exposure to electromagnetic fields of similar strengths to those emitted by cell phones, with some new proteins being induced.

The controversy over the potential health effects of electromagnetic radiation associated with cell phones has been fuelled by new research originating in Iran. A team of scientists from Shiraz University has found that electromagnetic fields change the proteome of rat testes, with implications for fertility.
There has been conflicting evidence over the last decade on the harmful nature of these EMFs. For instance, some studies have suggested that they do not affect the brain whereas others have found the opposite. Most notably, a recent study from Greece revealed that 143 proteins in the mouse brain were affected, including some from the regions dealing with learning and memory. The same type of radiation is emitted by wireless transmitters and wireless computer equipment, so the effects might be more widespread than first anticipated.
Now, Masood Sepehrimanesh, Nasrin Kazemipour, Mehdi Saeb and Saeed Nazifi have turned their attention to the testis, comparing the protein expressions from animals exposed to an EMF with those that were not exposed. Their main focus was on proteins that were induced or completely inhibited, rather than those which underwent a partial change in expression.

Lab rats exposed to EMF

Over 30 days, ten rats were exposed daily to 900 MHz radiation for 1, 2 or 4 hours and ten others were sham exposed under the same conditions in the cage. After this period, they were sacrificed and the proteins extracted from the testes.
The protein components in the extracts were separated by 2D SDS-PAGE under a protocol designed to minimise technical variations. Each testis sample was analysed in triplicate and all of the samples were prepared at the same time by a single technician using the same apparatus.
The separated proteins on the gel were visualised with a silver stain and those that were present only in the irradiated group or the sham group were marked as candidates for identification by mass spectrometry following digestion with trypsin.

Protein oxidation induced

The total number of protein spots on the gels ranged from 365 to 439 but there was little difference between the protein patterns for all three exposure groups. The overall protein concentrations and weights of the testes were not affected by the EMF treatment but there were some differences in individual proteins.
Significantly, 18 proteins were found only in the exposed group and 16 in the sham exposed group. They were not a result of thermal damage to the testes because the temperatures were maintained at 23°C during the whole program. The strongest and best separated spots, numbering 7 and 6 in the exposed and sham exposed groups, respectively, were analysed.
One of the proteins that disappeared following irradiation is Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase which offers major protection against oxygen toxicity in the testis. Its absence was attributed to the lack of viable spermatogonia, immature stem cells that form spermatocytes, where it is normally found in large quantities. If validated in further research, this effect alone is a serious consequence of EMFs.
The appearance of type II peroxiredoxin 1 in the testis after exposure to the EMF was due to over-oxidation of its cysteine residues. The occurrence of oxidative stress was supported by the appearance of heat shock proteins, possibly induced to combat the formation of free radicals, and the loss of valosin-containing protein due to the oxidative S-thiolation of cysteine residues.
Other affected proteins were related to metabolism and cytoskeletal processes within the testis. So, several different processes within the testis appear to be affected by the impact of EMFs.
The research team acknowledge that their findings will have to be confirmed by complementary studies using other methods like Western blotting and immunohistochemical procedures. However, if the protein alterations can be repeated, then exposure to EMFs from cell phones and wifi equipment will have to be reconsidered by national and international health organisations as they could have a bearing on male fertility.

Published in the journal Computers in Human Behaviorthe research explains how children's social skills may be declining as they have less time for face-to-face interaction and more time for digital media."Many people are looking at the benefits of digital media ineducation, and not many are looking at the costs," senior author of the study Patricia Greenfield, a professor of psychology in the UCLA College, said in a statement.
"Decreased sensitivity to emotional cues - losing the ability to understand the emotions of other people - is one of the costs. The displacement of in-person social interaction by screen interaction seems to be reducing social skills."
UCLA scientists found that sixth-graders who went five days without even glancing at a smartphone, television or other digital screen did substantially better at reading human emotions than sixth-graders from the same school who continued to spend hours each day looking at their electronic devices.
The psychologists looked at two groups of sixth-graders: 51 who spent five days at a camp that didn't allow electronic devices, and 54 kids from the same school who did not attend the camp. The latter group reportedly texted, watched television and played videogames for an average of four-and-a-half hours on a typical school day. Both groups of students were shown 48 pictures of faces that were happy, sad, angry or scared, and asked to identify their feelings.
Kids who attended the camp improved as time went on at recognizing others' emotions and detect nonverbal cues, whereas the other students who continued to use their technology did not show such animprovement.
"You can't learn nonverbal emotional cues from a screen in the way you can learn it from face-to-facecommunication," explained lead author Yalda Uhls. "If you're not practicing face-to-face communication, you could be losing important social skills."

LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -
More than 10,000 smart meters will soon be replaced in Lakeland due to their possibility of overheating.

The meters of concern have the remote disconnect feature and have "RD" on the outside label. There have been six cases since their installation in 2011 of remote disconnect meter fires.

However, Lakeland spokesman Kevin Cook said only two of those fires are believed to be from moisture intrusion and overheating. That's enough, he said, to take the precautionary measure to replace the affected meters.
The replacement will begin next week and is expected to take four months. The manufacturer is providing the new meters and Lakeland Electric is providing the labor.
Lourdes Candelaria lives at an apartment complex where one of the remote disconnect meters is mounted. When she learned of the overheating concerned, she said the meter needs to go sooner than later.
“We live in a complex and if one apartment catches fire, it's probably going to spread throughout the whole building,” Candelaria said.
Cook said those with the RD meters have no reason to be concerned for their safety as they await a new meter. He emphasized the move was precautionary.
Those impacted by the change will be notified by mail. Cook said residents with RD meters will not incur any cost by the replacement.
Remote disconnect meters make up close to 10 percent of the Lakeland Electric customer base.

AFTER 155 days in the dark and battling United Energy over their smart meters, Sofia Telemzouguer’s power is finally back on — albeit temporarily.
Her Cheltenham home was reconnected after VCAT ordered her power provider United Energy to switch her electricity back on.
She and her daughter Larissa, 16, were disconnected in March when the company found out Ms Telemzouguer had taken out her home’s smart meter, claiming it was making her ill, and replaced it with an analog meter.
Since the disconnection they had been living by candlelight and without the ability to refrigerate food, which led Ms Telemzouguer to approach the VCAT’s Human Rights Division.
The respite is temporary, however, with the interim order lasting only until March next year, when she is set to have her hearing.
Ms Telemzouguer removed the initial smart meter after she claimed the electromagnetic waves were affecting her health.
People Power Victoria — No Smart Meters spokesman Marc Florio said it was a “correct and welcome decision”.
He said it was “outrageous” that Ms Telemzouguer had needed to go to court to get a manually read meter.
“The deplorable situation Ms Telemzouguer found herself in is the direct result of the State Government policy, both Labor and Liberal, to force smart meters onto peoples homes,” Mr Florio said.
“We support the actions Ms Telemzouguer has taken to regain her electricity supply in a form that is not detrimental to her health.”
The meter installed temporarily at her house has had its radio frequency chip removed, so it has to be read manually rather than continually sending out updates via radio signals.
Ms Telemzouguer did not want to comment as she was worried it might affect her case.
