Influence of pregnancy stage and fetus position on the whole-body and local exposure of the fetus to RF-EMF.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the influence of pregnancy stage and fetus position on the whole-body and brain exposure of the fetus to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields. Our analysis is performed using semi-homogeneous pregnant woman models between 8 and 32 weeks of amenorrhea. By analyzing the influence of the pregnancy stage on the environmental whole-body and local exposure of a fetus in vertical position, head down or head up, in the 2100 MHz frequency band, we concluded that both whole-body and average brain exposures of the fetus decrease during the first pregnancy trimester, while they advance during the pregnancy due to the rapid weight gain of the fetus in these first stages. From the beginning of the second trimester, the whole-body and the average brain exposures are quite stable because the weight gains are quasi proportional to the absorbed power increases.The behavior of the fetus whole-body and local exposures during pregnancy for a fetus in the vertical position with the head up were found to be of a similar level, when compared to the position with the head down they were slightly higher, especially in the brain.

Dr. Oz and Weil then discussed the health dangers of cell phones and Wi-Fi systems. Dr. Weil said there is no clear-cut scientific evidence linking the electromagnetic fields emitted by Wi-Fi systems and cell phones to cancer, but he thinks they are a bigger threat to our health than we realize.
As a precaution, Weil suggested keeping Wi-Fi routers outside the bedroom, keeping cell phones away from your head, using an ear piece for cell phones, and refraining from the use of electric blankets, mattress pads, or heating pads.
Next, Drs. Oz and Weil examined the hidden dangers of airport scanners. Weil said airport scanners only use small amounts of ionizing radiation (the kind used in X-rays and CT scans), but said you should ask for a pat-down instead of going through a scanner as a precaution. Research has shown that ionizing radiation can damage DNA and fuel cancer.

Dr. Oz asked Dr. Weil what is the single most important health issue people should be aware of. Weil said sugar tops the list. "There's so much research about the dangers of sugar," said Weil. "Stop drinking sugary drinks, including sweetened tea, fruit juice, coffee and energy drinks."

Dr. Weil said he does not think healthy saturated fats such as olive oil clog arteries, but trans fat definitely does. Weil said a diet that's high in sugar and simple carbs is responsible for heart disease, and said we should feel free to consume healthy saturated fats like salmon, cheese, and olive oil in moderate amounts.
Weil echoed the sentiments of other medical experts, who say unprocessed saturated fat does not cause obesity or heart disease. If anything, what causes these degenerative illnesses is a high-carb diet.
Obesity diet expert Dr. Eric Westman, author of Keto Clarity, said the low carb, high-fat ketogenic, Paleo and Atkins diets are the best eating plans for weight loss and disease prevention.
Westman, who has helped thousands of morbidly obese patients lose hundreds of thousands of pounds over the years on the ketogenic, Paleo and Atkins plans, said a low carb, high-fat diet helps people maintain their weight loss long-term — something the vast majority of diets cannot claim.
"I tell my patients not to fear the fat," said Dr. Westman. "Eat lots of fat. Fat makes you feel full. There's no problem with fat. In fact, saturated fat, the fat that we've been taught not to eat, raises your good cholesterol best of all the foods you can eat."

I remember when once upon a time, wi-fi could barely reach from one room to the other. It wasn’t even regarded as a serious technology by some back then – but oh my, how times have changed! Now, wi-fi is almost ubiquitous in the developed world, but the problem still remains the same – the range. Now, the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) has approved a new standard for 802.22 wi-fi, and this bad boy can reach 100 kilometers (62 miles in all directions) – translating into 31.000 square km (12.000 square miles)!

The previously accepted standard, the 802.11 a/b/g/n, which is likely the wireless standard that you currently use to connect to the Internet will not become obsolete anytime soon, so there’s no need to worry about replacing your router.

But fairly soon we might be dealing with a range of wi-fi that we are more accustomed to for radio. This could translate into simple internet access for rural areas and or a blanket of municipal wi-fi throughout cities. In the long run, it could also spell the demise of 3G – why would you need it when you have wi-fi everywhere? DVice reports:

“Now that the official standard has been approved, companies can go start building things that incorporate 802.22 technology, so it’s really just a matter of time before none of us are without Wi-Fi access ever again. Phew.”

A scholarly article on wireless safety, published online in the Journal of Microscopy and Ultrastructure, reports that children and fetuses are the most at risk from neurological and biological damage that results from microwave radiation emitted by wireless devices, due to the higher rate of absorption of microwave radiation by children than by adults. The paper, titled "Why children absorb more microwave radiation than adults: The consequences," describes how the fetus is particularly vulnerable to microwave radiation, which can cause degeneration of the protective myelin sheath that surrounds brainneurons.  The authors recommend that wireless toys be banned due to the serious potential health risks.
The paper also documents cancer registry studies showing increased brain cancerincidence. Because the average latency time between first exposure and diagnosis of a tumor can be decades, the total number of tumors induced in children may not be diagnosed until well into adulthood.
The authors explain that current exposure limits are based on the erroneous assumption that tissue damage from overheating is the only potential danger of wireless devices. However, extensive scientific reports document the non-thermal biological effects from chronic (long-term) exposures. Although government warnings have been issued worldwide, most of the public is unaware of such warnings.
Pediatric neurologist Dr. Maya Shetreat-Klein stated, "Pregnant women deserve to know that wireless radiation can have an impact on the developing brain. We're seeing alarming increases in the number of children diagnosed with neurological disorders over the past decade, and anything we can do that might help reduce that rate should be taken very seriously." during her remarks while launching the Baby Safe Project in New York this June.
The authors state that consumers are unaware that cellphones, tablets and laptop manuals have specific advice on recommended distances (20 cm rule for tablets/laptops and about ½ inch for cell phones) from the user in order to ensure compliance with exposure standards. Children and adults use wireless devices in ways that "violate" these recommendations, putting them at even increased risk.
The authors make specific recommendations:  pregnant women should avoid wireless exposures; children should not play with wireless toys; adolescent girls and women should not place cellphones in their bras or in hijabs; and government exposure limits need to be urgently revised.
The paper's authors include: Santosh Kesari, MD, PhD, Professor of Neurosciences at UC San Diego School of Medicine, and Director of Neuro-oncology at Moores UCSD Cancer Center; Devra Davis, PhD, MPH, cancer researcher, toxicologist, Founder and President of the Environmental Health Trust; L. Lloyd Morgan, Senior Science Fellow at the Environmental Trust.

The new head of the CTIA sat down with PCMag and said the wireless carrier association has one big priority going forward--spectrum.

The CTIA is an odd bird. All of the major wireless carriers, as well as Apple, Motorola, BlackBerry, and Nokia all sit on its board, and the group has to regularly find something they all agree on.

It takes a lot of political skill to ride herd on such a fractious bunch, but new CTIA president Meredith Atwell Baker has that in spades. Originally from Texas, she's seen all sides of the communications debate—she worked in the Bush Commerce Department and the Obama FCC before making a controversial jump to Comcast, shortly after approving its merger with NBC.

Baker sat down with PCMag.com at our offices on Wednesday and made her new agenda clear.

"Our priority has been and will always be spectrum. There was a spectrum drought from 2008, and we have two crazy important auctions coming up. Our focus is on both of those auctions, making sure they go well, but also on what the next band is that the industry needs," she said.

Those two auctions, by the way, are this fall's AWS-3 in the 1.7 and 2.1Ghz bands, and next year's 600Mhz broadcast incentive auctions. AWS-3 will involve up to four small blocks of paired spectrum suitable for cellular networks, while the amount of 600Mhz spectrum up for grabs will vary.

"Our speeds have increased eight times since 2010, but the thing that's going to make them increase is more spectrum," Baker said.

To keep the pipeline flowing, the CTIA will need to become a resource which helps U.S. policymakers find and free up spectrum for commercial use, she said. She's working with the Department of Defense to convince military groups that shifting spectrum isn't too much of a chore, and she's hoping her experience at Comcast will smooth relationships with broadcasters during the upcoming 600Mhz auction.

"It has to work for everyone," she said. "My background comes from the NTIA, where we managed the government spectrum, and we're learning how to make these transitions easier. AWS-1 was hard. I'm looking at AWS-3, it's better, and it's easier."

Upcoming spectrum should ideally also be globally aligned, according to Baker.
"AWS-3 is incredibly valuable because it's internationally harmonized. We're in touch with our friends at the GSMA in terms of what advocacy we can do together, and we'll be looking at that together," she said.

As a wireless geek, I was impressed by Baker's passionate, complete knowledge of detailed spectrum issues. I actually had to recalibrate my questions a bit. Steve Largent, the former football hero who headed the CTIA for 11 years, was much more into policy topics, especially cutting taxes on wireless services. But Baker slings around spectrum allocations like a CTO.

Picking Her Battles
She's still the voice of wireless carriers, though. Asked about the current Verizon-FCC tussle over throttling unlimited data plan users, she came down firmly on Verizon's side.

"All of our carriers have committed to an open Internet, but we need to talk about reasonable network management," she said. "One strand of fiber has more capacity than the entire electromagnetic spectrum that wireless runs on. If we want to deliver quality of service to our customers, for instance, a voice product that doesn't have latency, they have to be managed."

But Baker wouldn't be drawn in by FCC chair Tom Wheeler's crowing that "four national providers is good for American consumers," in the wake of the collapsed Sprint-T-Mobile merger. Back when she was on the FCC, she and co-commissioner Robert McDowell said that the FCC's role as it relates to mergers "has become excessively coercive and lengthy."
"We don't take any position on mergers. We are just grateful that so many people are interested in the American wireless market," Baker said.
