Modern living has made us ‘supremely arrogant’ in the way we ignore the importance of sleep, leading scientists warn.

The demands of today’s 24-hour society mean many people push themselves too far, or ‘override the clock’, in the words of one expert.

Far too many of us bury our heads in the sand over the issue and ignore the health risks of neglecting our sleep, he added.

Lack of sleep puts the body clock out of sync and can cause severe health problems, such as cancer, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and obesity.

A project involving scientists from Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Manchester and Surrey universities concluded that the public and governments are failing to take the problem seriously.

The experts, who collaborated for the BBC’s Day of the Body Clock programme, found that on average, people get two hours’ less sleep a night than 60 years ago.
 
    They warned that modern life – and particularly our attachment to computers and hand-held gadgets such as tablets and smartphones – means many are ‘living against’ their natural body clocks, which are biologically geared to rest at night.

    Professor Russell Foster, a neuroscientist at the University of Oxford, said: ‘We are the supremely arrogant species; we feel we can abandon four billion years of evolution and ignore the fact that we have evolved under a light-dark cycle. 

    'What we do as a species, perhaps uniquely, is override the clock. Long-term acting against the clock can lead to serious  health problems.’

    It is an issue that affects the whole of society, but is particularly acute among teenagers, he said.

    Nearly all living things have an internal mechanism known as the circadian rhythm, or body clock, which synchronizes bodily functions to the 24-hour pattern of the Earth’s rotation. 

    In humans and other mammals, it is regulated by the senses – most importantly the way the eye perceives light and dark and the way skin feels temperature changes.

    Research has found too little sleep at night can increase cholesterol levels by nearly two-thirds.

    The study, published in the journal Sleep Medicine, suggests sleep disruption - including lying in for too long - causes more damage to women than men.
    Women getting six hours sleep or less were found to be 65 per cent more likely to have a raised cholesterol level.

    And those lying in bed for 10 hours or more were 27 per cent more at risk.
    In contrast cholesterol levels in men seemed to hardly differ, no matter how long they spent sleeping.

    Scientists say they are not sure why women seem to be more affected than men but stress the results may help shed light on why heart disease seems to be more prominent in those who do not get a full night's rest.

    Lack of sleep may not actually cause high cholesterol but simply be a marker for an unhealthy lifestyle.

    Poor sleepers tend to eat more high-energy-density food and have lower vitamin intake.

    Previous studies also show they tend to exercise less and may be more likely to smoke and drink alcohol.

    In a report on their findings, the researchers said: 'Self-reported short and long sleep durations were significantly associated with a poorer lipid (blood fat) profile in women, whereas these associations were not significant in men.'
    The mechanism rules our daily rhythms, including our sleep and waking patterns and metabolism.

    But the pressures of modern living mean we are now increasingly working against our clocks and risking long term health problems from metabolic disease.

    Professor Charles Czeisler of Harvard University, said smartphones, tablets and computers had high levels of light at the blue end of the spectrum, which hits us ‘in the sweet spot’ for disrupting the human body clock.

    ‘Light is the most powerful synchroniser of your internal biological clock,’ he said.
    ‘Light exposure, especially short wavelength blue-ish light in the evening, will reset our circadian rhythms to a later hour, postponing the release of the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin and making  it more difficult for us to get up in the morning.

    ‘It’s a big concern that we’re being exposed to much more light, sleeping less and, as a consequence, may suffer from many chronic diseases,’ Professor Czeisler said.

    Separate research published today in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, suggests forcing the body to work overnight may also cause damage to the brain similar to Alzheimer’s disease.

    US scientists at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, found that rats kept awake at night suffered disturbances in the electrical activity of neurons that are typically seen in dementia. The authors believe the findings may also apply to humans.

    Another study, in Sleep Medicine, found women who get less than six hours a night were 65 per cent more likely to have high total cholesterol and 71 per cent more likely to have raised levels of LDL – the so-called ‘bad’ cholesterol which clogs up arteries around the heart.

    Ensure your pillows allow your neck to stay flat. Poor posture when you sleep can lead to aches and pains and long-term back problems, which can cause you to miss out on sleep due to the pain.
    - Get your temperature right
    Being too hot or too cold can disrupt a good night's sleep. The optimum temperature to guarantee an uninterrupted night is between 16 to 18C.
    - To nap or not to nap?
    Studies are divided on the benefits of napping during the day. For many, grabbing a quick rest does not inhibit their ability to sleep at night. But others have found a nap can make people feel more tired.
    - Eat right to sleep tight
    What you eat can have an impact on how you sleep. You should aim to eat dinner at least a couple of hours before going to bed and avoid stimulants such as caffeine and sugar. Drinking alcohol can result in poor quality, disrupted sleep.
    - Get active to boost your sleep
    Research has shown that those who are fit and healthy are much less likely to experience problems sleeping. It is not advisable to exercise too close to your bedtime, as your body temperature can take a few hours to drop back to a normal level.
    - A clean home is more conducive to sleep
    Dust and mould allergies can affect sleep as sufferers can find they get blocked sinuses at night. Ventilate your bedroom daily, change your sheets regularly and keep dust to a minimum.
    - Get into a routine
    Going to bed at roughly the same time every night can help your body recognise when it is time for sleep. It is advisable to try and avoid sedatives, such as sleeping pills, as their effect tends to be short lived.

    Using a cellphone for more than half an hour a day over five years can triple the risk of developing certain types of brain cancer, a French study suggests.
    Researchers found that people who used mobiles for 15 hours per month on average had a two to three times greater risk of developing glioma and meningioma — the main types of brain tumour — compared with those who used their phone rarely.

    The potential risk of cancer from cellphone and wireless frequencies should be aggressively pursued with new research, an expert panel recommends. But federal guidelines that spell out safe exposure levels of radiofrequency waves emitted by cellphones and other wireless devices appear to be mostly adequate, experts say.
    The Royal Society of Canada panel issued its report Tuesday on Health Canada’s Safety Code 6, which sets out limits on exposure to radiofrequency fields aimed at protecting the health of workers and the general public.
    The findings, by researchers at Bordeaux University, supported other international studies, suggesting a “higher threat of a brain tumour observed solely among heavier [mobile phone] users.”
    While a string of studies have failed to find conclusive proof of a link between mobile use and
    cancer, several have suggested intensive, long-term use can raise the likelihood of contracting
    gliomas.
    Isabelle Baldi, one of the scientists who led the French research, published in the British journalOccupational and Environmental Medicine, said: “Our study is part of that trend, but the results have to be confirmed.” Researchers examined 253 cases of glioma and 194 cases of meningioma reported in four French departments, or counties, between 2004 and 2006.
    These patients were compared with 892 “controls,” or healthy individuals.
    The comparison found a higher risk among those who used their phone intensively, especially those who used it for their work, such as in the sales industry. The duration of use in this category ranged from between two and 10 years, averaging at five years.
    ‘It is difficult to define a level of risk … as the technology is constantly evolving’
    There were, however, unexplained anomalies. In contrast with previous research, the study found that cancer occurred on the opposite side of the brain to where the phone was habitually used, rather than on the same side.
    “It is difficult to define a level of risk, if any, especially as mobile phone technology is constantly evolving,” the study conceded.
    “The rapid evolution of technology has led to a considerable increase in the use of mobile phones and a parallel decrease of [radiowave intensity] emitted by the phones.
    “Studies taking account of these recent developments and allowing the observation of potential long-term effects will be needed.”
    In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer warned that radiofrequency fields used by mobile phones were possibly carcinogenic.
    The largest study to date on the risks of mobile phone use, the 2010 Interphone study, found no raised risk of brain tumors among those who regularly used mobiles.

    IRISH Water has dismissed claims of a major U-turn in its policy towards disputed water meter installations after it removed equipment from a housing estate at the centre of a bitter three-week stand-off.

    Five water meters were dug up and removed yesterday by contractors acting for Irish Water in the Ashbrook Heights estate in Togher, Cork.
    The works came after a three-week protest campaign that saw some residents repeatedly block contractors from installing meters.
    Protesters climbed into excavations and stood in front of heavy machinery, preventing the work from proceeding.
    Gardai attended the scene on numerous occasions, but no arrests were made.
    Yesterday, contractors for Irish Water were cheered and offered tea, coffee and scones as they began removing the meters from 9am.
    Residents and protesters claimed victory and predicted Irish Water will now be forced into similar removals nationwide.
    However, Irish Water insisted the removal of the five meters was undertaken purely on health and safety grounds.
    “In the Ashbrook Estate, Irish Water is performing permanent reinstatement works to pathways and surrounding areas as planned,” a spokesman said.
    “There are six boundary installations impacted. Five meters in new boundary boxes have been removed temporarily for inspection and will be 
re-installed in due course.”
    But residents and protesters claimed the equipment removals represented a turning point in their campaign.
    “We are here for however long it takes. We aren’t going anywhere because we have the support of Ashbrook residents and the people of Cork,” John Lonergan said.
    Mr Lonergan said other communities nationwide now have to stand up for their rights and object to water meters being installed.
    Mother-of-two and Ashbrook resident Suzanne O’Flynn lives just metres from the protests.
    “I have no problem with a flat water charge because I think that is fair. I have no problem with a normal water meter, but I do not want a smart meter outside my home,” she said.
    Another resident, Marie Cummins, paid tribute to the protesters. “Fair play to them, they are fighting for everyone’s rights,” she said.
    John O’Donovan of the Campaign Against Home and Water Taxes said the peaceful demonstration was an example of how “people power can triumph” no matter what the odds.
    Challenge
    “If people stand together they can stop this unfair charge. I’m here for however long it takes.”
    Protester Brian Coleman warned: “This is a major challenge to the people of Ireland. Without our national assets like water we have nothing left as a people.”
    Irish Water estimates that over 27,000 meters a month are now being installed.
    Over 1,100 water meters were successfully installed on one day last week. The first bills are due to be issued from January.
    Anyone without a meter will receive a flat rate bill next year.

    Smart Meter Installation Triggers Fire in Regina Home

    Local fire department is fighting a fire that burst at a Glencairn home while SaskPower workers were installing a smart meter on Wednesday afternoon. According to the deputy chief with Regina Fire and Protective Services, Gerard Kay, "from what we know right now, Grid One (Solutions) was on scene exchanging the meter, upgrading to the smart meter, and accidentally grounded the electrical circuit which resulted in the ignition and subsequent fire.”
    Grid One Solutions is among the contractors working with SaskPower on an elaborate smart meter installation process. Sources confirm that many SaskPower workers are working with Grid One Solutions' as the company only uses their equipment and management expertise. A spokesperson for SaskPower, Tyler Hopson, stated that "our understanding is that all protocols were being followed by our SaskPower employee on site at the time of the fire." Hopson highlighted that this is just the third meter-related fire in Regina in the past 10 years.
    Hopson affirmed that the smart meters and installation are very safe, despite two 2012 fires in British Columbia being linked to BC Hydro smart meters. It was explained that fire crews rushed to a Coquitlam home after report that problems with the meter caused minor damage. The Mission woman's home was burnt down a day after meter installation. SaskPower’s project to install 500,000 smart meters has started since 2013 and the $190 million process is expected to end before March 2015. Hopson reiterated that among the almost 90,000 installations so far, this is the first incident of its kind.

    Thousands of schoolchildren are to be enrolled in a three-year study to find out if mobiles and wi-fi are damaging their brains.
    The study, which has been commissioned by the Department of Health and is being carried out by Imperial College and the University of London, will monitor the cognitive development of 11 to 14-year-olds.
    Youngsters will be asked to install an app on their phones which will capture the duration of calls, texts and internet use. Their brain function will be measured in Year 7 and again in Year 9.
    "We need to investigate because it is a new technology," Professor Paul Elliot, director of Medical Research Council Centre for Environment and Health at Imperial College.
    "Scientific evidence available to date is reassuring and shows no association between exposure to radio frequency waves from mobile phone use and brain cancer in adults in the short term.
    “But the evidence available regarding long term heavy use and children's use is limited and less clear."
    The Study of Cognition, Adolescents and Mobile Phones (SCAMP) is the largest study in the world to look at potential damage to children’s brains.
    It will focus on cognitive functions such as memory and attention, which continue to develop into adolescence.
    Cognition is how we think; how we make decisions; and how we process and recall information.
    It is linked to intelligence and educational achievement and forms the building blocks of the innovative and creative potential of every individual and therefore society as a whole.
    Seventy percent of 11-12 year olds in the UK now own a mobile phone, rising to 90 per cent by age 14.
    Most research to date on mobile phones has focused on adults and risk of brain cancers.
    While there is no convincing evidence that radio wave exposures from mobile phones effect health, scientists remain uncertain as to whether children's developing brains are more vulnerable.
    It is feared that their developing nervous system may make them at greater risk of damage from the absorption of energy.
    More than 160 secondary schools in the outer London area will today (TUES) receive invitations to take part.
    Current UK health policy guidelines advise that children under 16 should be encouraged to use mobile phones for essential purposes only, where possible use a hands-free kit or text and, if calls are really necessary, to keep them short.
    “As mobile phones are a new and widespread technology central to our lives, carrying out the SCAMP study is important in order to provide the evidence base with which to inform policy and through which parents and their children can make informed life choices,” said Dr Mireille Toledano of Imperial College, the Principal Investigator of the study.

     WHO's "Health for the world’s adolescents" report reveals that depression is the predominant cause of illness and disability for both boys and girls aged 10 to 19 years. The top 3 causes of adolescent deaths globally are road traffic injuries, HIV/AIDS, and suicide. Worldwide, an estimated 1.3 million adolescents died in 2012.
    “We hope this report will focus high-level attention on the health needs of 10 to 19-year-olds and serve as a springboard for accelerated action on adolescent health.”

    Drawing on a wealth of published evidence and consultations with 10 to 19-year-olds around the world, the report also brings together, for the first time, all WHO guidance on the full spectrum of health issues affecting adolescents. These include tobacco, alcohol and drug use, HIV, injuries, mental health, nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, and violence. The report recommends key actions to strengthen the ways countries respond to adolescents’ physical and mental health needs.
    “The world has not paid enough attention to the health of adolescents,” says Dr Flavia Bustreo, Assistant Director-General for Family, Women and Children’s Health, WHO. “We hope this report will focus high-level attention on the health needs of 10 to 19-year-olds and serve as a springboard for accelerated action on adolescent health.”

    Road traffic injuries top cause of death

    Road traffic injuries are the number 1 cause of adolescent deaths globally, and the number 2 cause of illness and disability. Boys are disproportionately affected, with more than three times the rate of deaths than that of girls. Increasing access to reliable and safe public transport can reduce road traffic injuries among adolescents. Road safety regulations (e.g. alcohol and speed limits), establishing safe pedestrian areas around schools, and graduated licensing schemes where drivers privileges are phased in over time, can all reduce risks.

    Mental health problems take a big toll

    Globally, depression is the number 1 cause of illness and disability in this age group, and suicide ranks number 3 among causes of death. Some studies show that half of all people who develop mental disorders have their first symptoms by the age of 14. If adolescents with mental health problems get the care they need, this can prevent deaths and avoid suffering throughout life.

    Pregnancy and childbirth-related deaths have fallen

    Deaths due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth among adolescents have dropped significantly since 2000, particularly in regions where maternal mortality rates are highest. WHO’s South-East Asia, Eastern Mediterranean and African Regions have seen estimated declines of 57%, 50% and 37%, respectively. Despite these improvements, maternal mortality still ranks second among causes of death among 15 to 19-year-old girls globally, exceeded only by suicide.

    Deaths due to HIV rising

    Estimates suggest that the number of HIV-related deaths among adolescents is rising. The increase is predominantly in the African Region, at a time when HIV-related deaths are decreasing in all other population groups. HIV now ranks as the second cause of deaths in adolescents globally.

    Some other infectious diseases still major causes of death

    Thanks to childhood vaccination, adolescent deaths and disability from measles have fallen markedly—by 90% in the African Region between 2000 and 2012. However, common infectious diseases that have been a focus for action in young children are still killing adolescents. For example, diarrhoea and lower respiratory tract infections now rank second and fourth among causes of death in 10 to 14-year-olds. Combined with meningitis, these conditions account for 18% of all deaths in this age group, little changed from 19% in 2000.

    New data on adolescent health behaviours

    New data from countries where surveys have been done show that fewer than 1 in every 4 adolescents does enough exercise (WHO recommends at least one hour of moderate to vigorous exercise per day), and in some countries as many as 1 in 3 is obese.
    But some trends in adolescent health-related behaviours are improving. For example, rates of cigarette smoking are decreasing among younger adolescents in most high-income countries and in some middle- and low-income countries as well.

    Critical period for preventing chronic disease

    Adolescence is an important time for laying the foundations of good health in adulthood. Many health-related behaviours and conditions that underlie the major noncommunicable diseases start or are reinforced during this period of life.
    “If left unchecked, health problems and behaviours that arise during adolescence—such as tobacco and alcohol use, diet and exercise patterns, overweight and obesity—have a serious impact on the health and development of adolescents today, and potentially devastating effects on their health as adults tomorrow,” says Jane Ferguson, Scientist in WHO’s Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and lead author of the report. “At the same time, we must not let up on efforts to promote and safeguard the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents, including HIV.”
    Health policies from 109 countries were reviewed for this report. Among them, 84% give some attention to adolescents. In three-quarters, the focus is on sexual and reproductive health (including HIV/AIDS); approximately one-third address tobacco and alcohol use among adolescents; and one-quarter address mental health. The report highlights the need for more countries to follow the example of countries like India whose new adolescent health strategy addresses a broader spectrum of health issues affecting adolescents, including mental health, nutrition, substance use, violence, and noncommunicable diseases, in addition to sexual and reproductive health.
    The report also emphasizes the need for improved data and information about adolescents’ health and the programmes that address it.
