Children Should Limit Use of Mobiles, Says New Report

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has done the biggest ever investigation into the safety of mobiles.
The results say mobiles ARE safe to use but children shouldn't use them too often - just in case.
Ever since people started using mobiles in the 1990s, there have been fears they could damage health because of the invisible radio waves they send out.
The health experts say there is still no evidence mobile phones harm us but they want to keep studying the effects over a much longer time.


80 million mobiles in the UK

There are now thought to be 80 million mobiles in the UK and because of TV and radio, Wi-Fi and other technology, we are hit by radio frequency signals all the time.
Even at night, if your mobile is switched on, it will be sending out and receiving signals.

But the experts said very little was known about risks beyond five years, because most people did not use mobile phones until the late 1990s.
They said they need longer to do their research, especially on children.
They want to learn how mobiles affect children's health and behaviour over a long period of time.

Epilepsy-related hospitalizations, which fell from 176,000 in 1993 to 95,000 in 2000, climbed to 136,000 in 2005, according to the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The recent 5-year climb represented a 43 percent increase. Epilepsy, a condition characterized by recurrent seizures that may include repetitive muscle jerking called convulsions, affects 1 to 2 percent of the U.S. population.
AHRQ's analysis also showed:
  • Nearly two-thirds of the patients hospitalized with epilepsy between 2000 and 2005 were younger than 45.
  • Between 1993 and 2005, convulsion-related hospitalizations increased 69 percent from 730,000 to 1.2 million. Patients 65 and older were more than twice as likely as younger people to be hospitalized with convulsions.
  • Although epilepsy can cause convulsions, the vast majority of these convulsion cases were not epilepsy related but were rather caused by fever, stroke, infection, uremia—blood poisoning caused by kidney failure—high or low blood sugar, low blood sodium levels, and substance abuse and withdrawal.
This AHRQ News and Numbers is based on data in Hospitalizations for Epilepsy and Convulsions, 2005. The report uses statistics from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, a database of hospital inpatient stays that is nationally representative of inpatient stays in all short-term, non-Federal hospitals. The data are drawn from hospitals that comprise 90 percent of all discharges in the United States and include all patients, regardless of insurance type, as well as the uninsured.

The Nordic trends are heterogenic: Norway shows increasing trends while Sweden, known for reporting problems and low quality registries show flat trend.

In Denmark there is a 40% increase in brain tumours among men between 2001 and 2010.

In Sweden most brain tumours that are not analysed by a pathologist are not reported to the registries. A recent government report shows that Sweden has a serious lack of pathologists: 100% more or the double are needed.

In spite of these facts, Röösli choses to spread the myth about the Nordic brain tumour trends

JUST recently one of my patients complained that she was experiencing difficulty sleeping. One of the observations I made was that she was constantly being interrupted by her two cellphones. In fact, I had to ask her to turn them off so that we could proceed with the consultation. I suggested to her that her insomnia may be due to her exposure to the electromagnetic radiation from various devices and that she limit exposure to these devices. She reluctantly agreed to give my recommendations a try. A few weeks later she called: "Doc, I'm not sure if its mind over matter, but I'm sleeping better."
Electromagnetic radiation has been around since the birth of the universe; light is its most familiar form. Electromagnetic fields are invisible and present everywhere in our environment.
Environmental exposure to man-made electromagnetic fields has been steadily increasing as a result of growing electricity demand, advancing technologies and changes in social behaviour. We are all exposed to a complex mix of weak electric and magnetic fields both at home and at work, from the generation and transmission of electricity, household appliances and industrial equipment to telecommunications and broadcasting. In other words, we are literally surrounded by a soup of electro-magnetic radiation at all times. Sources of exposure include cellular phones, Blackberrys, cordless phones, wireless networking (Wi Fi),TV antennas, refrigerators, microwaves and other household appliances.
Even in the absence of external electric fields, chemical reactions in our bodies generate tiny electrical currents. For example, nerves relay signals by transmitting electric impulses; the heart is electrically active -- as demonstrated with the aid an electrocardiogram (ECG).
Referred to as "electro-smog", the danger of electromagnetic radiation is that it is mostly invisible until great damage is done. Our dependence on office and communications equipment exposes us to frequencies that can have a detrimental effect on our well-being, especially if we are run-down or if our immune system is compromised.
Any imbalance in our electromagnetic field creates a disturbance in cell structure and function, which can lead to illness in sensitive individuals.
People who are "electrically sensitive" experience a wide range of symptoms upon exposure to even low levels of electromagnetic radiation. These symptoms can range from headaches, tingling and burning sensations, "brain fog", irregular heartbeat, depression, and insomnia to life-threatening seizures and heart attacks.
Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to reduce your exposure to "electro-smog".
* Rise with the sun and go to bed early to make maximum use of daylight and avoid using artificial lighting whenever possible.
* Keep your immune system strengthened with a nutrient-rich diet, take antioxidant supplements, get plenty of restful sleep, fresh air, sunlight, and regular exercise.
* Reduce your total body burden of toxins by detoxing your body regularly.
* Wear shoes with a sole made from natural materials, walk barefoot or hug a tree -- these all may help you release excess electric and magnetic fields into the earth and ground from your body.
* Use manual household equipment, for example, use a broom or mop instead of a vacuum cleaner.
*Do not use a microwave oven; however, if you do use one, do not stand directly in front of it while it is in operation.
*Unplug electrical appliances when not in use (this also lessens electricity bills).
* Keep your bedroom free of electrical appliances, especially near your head while you sleep.
* Use landlines whenever possible. Minimise the use of cordless phones (they emit a constant electromagnetic signal even when not in use) and cellular phones. Use cellular phones with a hands-free headset.
* Keep computer use to a minimum; keep unplugged when not in use.
* Minimise your exposure to WiFi areas.
* Wear a Q-Link pendant, which employs "sympathetic resonance technology to "repair and tune your biofield". I have been wearing one since 2001.

Studies suggest that small variations in magnetic fields can be environmental stresses

Newswise — SAN DIEGO, April 23, 2012 – We are surrounded by a constantly changing magnetic field, be it the Earth’s or those emanating from devices, such as cell phones. Carlos Martino, an assistant professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, is interested in understanding how these magnetic-field fluctuations change biochemical reactions inside us.
Martino explains that the subject is controversial. “Our research shows that exposure to different types of magnetic fields affect biological response,” he says. “More importantly, the exposure levels are well below the standard levels” approved by the World Health Organization. “This raises the concern of safety issues,” he adds. Martino will be presenting some of his work at the Experimental Biology 2012 meeting in San Diego, California on Monday, April 23.
Magnetic fields come in different types. There are static fields, like those around permanent magnets. The Earth’s magnetic field is quasi-static, which means it can fluctuate slightly. Then there are radiofrequency magnetic fields, which may change both in intensity and frequency.
Martino’s work concerns low-level static magnetic fields, which are one to two orders of magnitude weaker than the Earth’s field, as well as weak radiofrequency magnetic fields. Martino gives the example of cell phones, which give off very weak magnetic fields. There is debate whether these magnetic fields cause brain tumors in cell-phone users.
Martino says his work on low-level fields and radiofrequency magnetic fields raises “the question of reassessing the standard limit of exposure because we clearly see effects both in vitro and in vivo in the low level and radiofrequency magnetic field range.”
But it’s not all doom and gloom. In fact, by understanding how weak magnetic fields affect cancer cell processes and tumor growth, Martino sees the potential for a therapy based on weak radiofrequency fields.
He explains his group has recently shown that the reduction of the Earth’s magnetic field inhibits growth rates of cancerous lung fibrosarcoma cells, colorectal cancer cells and primary endothelial cells. He adds that low-level fields may modulate the production of reactive oxygen molecules, known to affect cellular proliferation and survival. Interestingly, Martino says pancreatic cancer cells show an increase in growth rate in the same low magnetic fields, indicating different cell types react differently to changes in magnetic fields.
Martino has extended his work beyond cell cultures to animal models. For instance, his group has shown that weak radiofrequency magnetic fields inhibit tumor growth in animal models. But in all of his work, Martino says, his group is aiming to get to the bottom of the molecular mechanisms that cause different cells to react in various ways to fluctuations in static and alternating magnetic fields.
