Utilities worry big tech’s bandwidth grab could interfere with grid communication

A Federal Communications Commission proposal would expand Wi-Fi traffic to part of the spectrum used by utilities.

Utilities don’t want your smart home to interfere with the smart grid.
The power industry is lining up against a Federal Communications Commission proposal that would let tech companies sell devices that send and receive data using a part of the radio spectrum currently used to manage the electric grid.
The change, utility officials say, would increase the risk of interference at a time when data from smart meters and digital sensors play an increasingly integral role in grid operations.
At issue is a chunk of frequencies known as the 6 gigahertz band. Like lanes on a highway, wireless signals travel on different spectrum bands. Utilities, public safety agencies, commercial wireless carriers and other organizations are licensed by the FCC to use the 6 GHz band.
“Utilities see this band as mission-critical,” said Robert Thormeyer, spokesman for the Utilities Technology Council. “Any interference to those transmissions degrades the integrity of the data being sent.”
Not all frequency bands require individual licenses to access. Wi-Fi currently resides on an unlicensed band near the 6 GHz band. A group of large tech companies, including Apple, Google, Facebook and Microsoft, want the FCC to expand the spectrum allowed for use by Wi-Fi internet connections to include the 6 GHz band.
Supporters of the proposed rule say that internet traffic on unlicensed spectrum is growing exponentially, and opening the 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi use will expand low-cost customer internet access while promoting development of more wireless technology.
Utilities and other licensed users of the 6 GHz spectrum band say if the FCC opens it up for unlicensed use, critical communications are more likely to be interrupted by people or businesses connecting to the internet through Wi-Fi. And since it’s unlicensed, they argue it will be more difficult to trace interruptions and fix them, potentially jeopardizing electric service and public safety.
“There has not been a lot [of spectrum] allocated for critical infrastructure like utilities,” said Stewart Kantor, president and CFO of Ondas Networks, a wireless network developer. The more the FCC opens up licensed spectrum for unlicensed use, “the more vulnerable they make those networks that are relying on it.”
Thormeyer acknowledged that the risk of interference is low. But he said interference can cause major problems for utilities, disrupting their ability to monitor vital equipment. For example, sensors on power lines communicate the status of the lines and shut them off when there’s a fault so minor problems don’t escalate. Interference could prevent that communication from getting through. “Utilities want to take out any risk at all,” he said.
Utilities started using the 6 GHz band during the 1990s after the FCC relocated them from another spectrum band to make room for other industries, Thormeyer said. This meant utilities had to invest in new equipment capable of reaching the 6 GHz band, he said.
He said the proposed change could force utilities to migrate again to another part of the spectrum. Some utilities have reported it could take them a decade to migrate and cost them $50 million to $100 million, but that depends on their size and location, Thormeyer said. “It’s a challenge that seems to be lost on the FCC at this moment.”
Tech companies pushing for the change said in comments that technology exists to prevent interference with licensed users, though Thormeyer said the system is unproven.
Spectrum has been an issue at the FCC for many years, he said. Going forward, he added, organizations like the Utilities Technology Council want to see more coordination between the FCC and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which regulates the utility industry at the national level. Meeting regularly could help the two agencies understand each other, Thormeyer said, especially as telecommunications becomes more important to the energy regulatory commission.
The FCC doesn’t have a set date to rule, but Thormeyer said it appears the commission will move forward with the proposal to open the 6 GHz band for unlicensed use, possibly later this year or early next year.
If the FCC moves forward, “I think they have to proceed cautiously,” Kantor, at Ondas, said. “The trade-offs are with the nation’s infrastructure.”

A Morphological Adaptation?: Smartphones Now Transforming The Human Skeleton

Modern life is transforming the human skeleton. Humans are now developing a bone spike at the back of the head caused by regularly looking down at their smartphones, according to a recent study.
The phenomenon is called an external occipital protuberance: a lump on the back of the head believed to be caused by the body reacting to smartphone use by growing new bone layers on the back of the skull.

David Shahar, a health scientist at the University of The Sunshine Coast, Australia, told BBC that in the last twenty years, he has noticed a spike in patients who have the extra bone layers was once considered rare.
The study was published in the Journal of Anatomy in 2016, Shahar and his co-author wrote how they discovered the phenomenon in x-rays of millennials at his clinic. He examined 218 radiographs of the lateral cervical spine, where external occipital protuberance appeared in 18 to 30-year-olds.

Of the group, 41% had the lump, with 10% having a spike at least 20mm long. The study noted it was more common in men than women, at 67% versus 20%. The longest was 35.7mm in a man and 25.5mm in a woman.
The extra bone is a type of enthesophytes, which is abnormal bony projections located on a tendon or ligament. Enthesophytes are common in baby boomers but not so much with millennials until the last decade.
Shahar said the proliferation of hand‐held technologies from early childhood, could explain his findings.
He said the phenomenon dubbed "text neck," is when the neck must work extra hard to stabilize the head in place while the head is pointed down to view devices like smartphones and tablets. Extended screen time will force the body to create more bond on the back of the skull to support the head.
According to another study in the journal Scientific Reports in 2018 involving 1200 participants aged between 18 to 86, Shahar discovered millennials were more likely to develop external occipital protuberance than baby boomers.
Shahar said, humans, participating in modern society will likely keep developing the lump and will become more substantial over time -- "Imagine if you have stalactites and stalagmites, if no one is bothering them, they will just keep growing."

FCC wants faster internet for farmers

High-speed connections could make for smarter farms and ranches.
The Federal Communications Commission has formed a task force to look into how to deliver high-speed broadband for the agriculture industry. Better internet will unlock efficiency, innovation and improvements at farms and ranches, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a press release (PDF) Monday.
With faster connections comes the ability to better implement internet of things and smart farming capabilities. Pai said farmers with access to both fiber and wireless internet are using it to monitor food intake across cattle, analyze soil and send out drones to monitor potato farms.
"This is the present and the future of American agriculture and we must do whatever we can to support these producers and enhance precision agriculture," Pai said.
The FCC's Task Force for Reviewing the Connectivity and Technology Needs of Precision Agriculture in the United States will work alongside the Department of Agriculture on developing policy recommendations. It will also consult with the agriculture and technology industries, and with experts.
The FCC is now looking for nominations for the 15-person task force. The task force should include representatives from internet services, satellite providers, state and local governments, agricultural production, electric cooperative industry, tribal agriculture, and precision agriculture equipment manufacturing, as well as coverage mapping experts, the agency said.
The goal is to achieve reliable connections on 95 percent of agricultural land by 2025.

The WHO File: Denial is a Big River That Flows Through Geneva

The case of Dr Emilie van Deventer, microwave engineer and facilitator of the greatest genocide the world has ever seen.

By Karl Muller

Below is a lengthy correspondence chain with the World Health Organization and the United Nations, in which I call for the removal of the head of the International EMF Project, which sets the world’s protection and research agendas with regard to wireless technology. This is a woman called Dr Emilie Perkins van Deventer. I personally met her and spoke to her three times at a conference in Johannesburg in 2007. She said to me at one point: “Industry doesn’t care about your health. They just want the network to work properly.” I immediately excused myself and ran to where my notepad was, to write down her exact words. She was very new in the job at that point and not very cautious in some of what she said.
Later, I had to explain to her what her own organisation’s policy was on the precautionary principle (warnings are bad, because they alarm people). She was hand-picked for this incredibly sensitive and powerful position by her mentor, one Dr Michael Repacholi. Appointments are made by insider fiat in this realm, make no mistake.
If you look below, you will find that Dr Michael Repacholi, an Australian, has been separately charged by medical doctors of complicity in two separate genocides: through his denial and cover-up of the dangers of wireless technology, and more lately through actively concealing studies showing the dangers of depleted uranium, the most lasting gift the U.S. invasion brought to Iraq.
My interrogation of the United Nations and WHO follows a call for action against the EMF Project and its biases from a senior international civil servant, Olga Sheean, who is still recovering from surgery to remove an acoustic neuroma, a tumour of the inner ear that has been repeatedly and clearly linked with mobile phone radiation. The exact cancer type associated with acoustic neuromas was found to occur in 3% of male rats exposed to low-levels of microwave radiation in a recent large-scale study by the U.S. government’s National Toxicology Program, as well as in a similar Italian study. This is slam-dunk evidence of a clear and severe hazard to human health.
Yet the WHO continues to deny that there is any sign of any danger whatsoever from wireless technology. WHO’s own International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2011 issued a precautionary warning, based on the findings of epidemiological and laboratory studies, and classified radio frequency radiation as a Class 2B “possible human carcinogen”. These are the top cancer doctors in the world. However, the microwave engineer in charge of the overall radiation health agenda knows better. In a presentation in Sweden a couple of years ago, Dr Emilie van Deventer gave a review of recent history in this field. Not only did she omit mentioning the IARC classification in 2011. She left out the year 2011 altogether. In passing, she then referred to “the IARC monograph of 2013” that formalised this Class 2B rating, without saying what it was about. This is the level of the absolute denial that flows through Geneva.
The correspondence below appears in reverse order. It thus begins with a mail to Dr Flavia Bustreo, Assistant Director-General for Family, Women’s and Children’s Health, who is Dr Emilie van Deventer’s immediate boss, as far as I can tell. It was she who finally responded to Olga Sheean’s call for action. As you will see, I make a big song and dance about finally getting any response whatsoever from WHO, because this is a very rare occurrence. The heads of government protection agencies, the world’s top researchers, citizens and journalists of all ilks from all over the world, have reported on the brick wall they hit when they try to get an answer, or just an acknowledgement of receipt from the International EMF Project. I can confirm this from bitter personal experience, culminating in the exchange below.
I am making this all public as part of the documentation of a vast, ongoing crime against humanity: the mass irradiation of the entire global population with pulsed microwaves. This has been described by many scientists as “the greatest experiment ever carried out on the human race”. This is no exaggeration. But because this radiation is invisible, no consent needs to be sought for this experiment.
I recently prepared a 40-page legal affidavit on the hazards of mobile phone masts for the attention of the then-Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Ms Patricia de Lille, who just resigned in a storm of acrimony and legal battles with her own political party, which she has now left. I doubt that she will have paid much attention to this document, especially as she legally cannot comment on this case as it is sub judice or before the courts at present. The sworn part of this statement is the chosen image for this article.
This document contains the most up-to-date summary of research on health around masts available in the world, to the best of my knowledge. It shows that the peer-reviewed studies on masts are unanimous: 24 out of 24 conducted worldwide show consistent health issues, including significantly raised cancer rates. Yet the EMF Project states that there is “no evidence” of risk from masts, and — as I document below — actively promoted the acceptance of such masts in kindergartens and schools, at least until I pointed this out to them and they quickly changed the wording of their fact sheet. This was the one time I actually did see WHO respond to something I said. This case of a mast over a creche in Cape Town was worth fighting to put the issue of masts in school playgrounds on the agenda, this is my central battle. We have choice about using handsets; we have no choice about exposure to masts. And to put a mast in a kindergarten playground is an atrocious violation of these kids’ rights.
In this legal submission, I outline the EMF Project’s directive to researchers not to look at health around masts, and especially not to look at cancer around masts. This directive dates from 2006, which is when Dr Emilie van Deventer took over at the EMF Project. She is therefore indelibly personally associated with this instruction, which has been particularly faithfully obeyed by American researchers: not one single study of health around masts has ever been conducted in the U.S.A., despite the tens of thousands of masts across the landscape, with millions more micro-masts to come with the ongoing rollout of 5G.
I make the point in my submission that this instruction not to research health around masts may be a legal ploy by the United Nations to cover their tracks against charges of crimes against humanity. If you are overtly notcollecting any health findings around masts, then ipso facto you cannot be accused of “conducting an experiment” on human beings without their consent. Or so their logic may go.
So: if we just keep a complete conspiracy of absolute silence, while we roll the masts out all over the world, and sweep the dead bodies under the carpet (you will see I end my legal submission with a study showing literally thousands of excess cancer deaths around masts in a Brazilian city): then we can get the whole 5G system in place before anyone notices. And then it’s going to be far too late for anyone to fight back, especially as we are also going to be exposed to microwave radiation from thousands of satellites, if Elon Musk gets his way, not to mention Google’s Loons, at least, when they are not crashing. There will be nowhere to hide.
Once there was a war, to save the world from a frightful totalitarian menace. After the Nuremberg trials, and the dreadful human experiments the Nazis conducted were revealed, all the Allied nations signed the Nuremberg Code, “the most important document in the history of the ethics of medical research”, promising that never again would human beings be used in experiments without their fully informed consent.
The International EMF Project, the World Health Organization, the United Nations itself, all spit on the Nuremberg Code every day. The most grotesque violations of all of the principles of this code by the wireless industry have been carried out on their watch without the slightest sign even of awareness or consciousness, let alone conscience, from these international civil servants. I do not call Dr Emilie van Deventer the greatest genocidal murderer in history lightly; but the rock-bottom minimum estimate I present, prepared in consultation with one of the world’s top authorities on microwave warfare, Mr Barrie Trower, is that 150 million people will be killed or incapacitatedby this radiation. That is more than both world wars combined, as Mr Trower points out. And I fear it is a drastic underestimate: the dangers of mass pandemics of birth deformities is also looming. Pregnant women now in wifi hot-spots are risking terrible genetic damage to their grandchildren, as I document in my legal submission.
What do you do when the global guardian against human rights abuses, the United Nations, is itself fully complicit in crimes against humanity and active, full-on global genocide?
You leave a paper trail, for one thing. And this is what I am laying down here. None of the people in the correspondence below can say that they were ignorant of the research on masts; they were informed, all right. I’ve argued elsewhere that true ignorance is always willful to some extent. You cannot ignore something of which you are not aware, even subconsciously. These people know exactly what they’re doing.
If you look carefully, the entire “non-ionizing radiation protection” paradigm is explicitly based on ignorance. The standards that WHO prescribes for masts are only intended for short-term exposures, and only protect you from being actually cooked by microwaves. These standards explicitly say they are not intended for long-term radiation protection and provide no scientific basis for acting as long-term guidelines.
You will also see that a WHO review paper lists 26 separate studies that show that low-level cellphone radiation affects brainwaves. This is not a “health risk”, according to WHO, although the most frequent anomalies are spikes in the low alpha brainwave spectrum, which is a semi-zombie state as you fall into sleep. This is surely a hazard for anyone driving a vehicle or operating heavy machinery. But the good microwave engineers at WHO do not think there is any danger in little children holding these powerful microwave transmitters to their heads. As a schoolteacher and education researcher, I have documented the effects I have seen on children in my legal submission. This is the most terrifying threat I have ever seen to the bodies and brains of young people, and it has already destroyed an entire generation of kids.
One day, all of these international “civil servants” will face the consequences of what they have done, before some international tribunal. The chief accused will definitely include Dr Margaret Chan, former Director General of WHO; Dr Michael Repacholi; and Dr Emilie Perkins van Deventer. I wish them all a long life and I will see them in court. And I will see them in hell.

An email exchange with the United Nations

April 10, 2017
Dear Dr Bustreo
I am an independent journalist and researcher based in the southern African Kingdom of Swaziland. Since February 13 of this year, I have been trying without success to obtain any comment on the submission by Ms Olga Sheean to the United Nations and specifically WHO Director General Margaret Chan on the appalling, systematic, and longstanding abuses occurring at the WHO International EMF Project. Below you will find the full email record of my queries.
Despite speaking directly with the WHO Media Office on March 8, 2017, when I was assured by Mr Christian Lindmeier that my query would receive attention, I have not had the courtesy even of an acknowledgement of receipt of my query from your Media Office or from any of the other UN and WHO officials addressed.
However, Ms Sheean has forwarded me the letter of acknowledgement of receipt that you sent her on March 10, 2017. She has heard nothing further from you and is now assuming that this response is your full and final answer to her call for action.
I am therefore approaching you to see whether indeed any proper considered response or reply may be forthcoming from WHO on this crucial issue.
In your lobbying for the position of Director General of WHO, you state that you believe the organisation should:
* Strive to be more effective, transparent, and accountable; and
* Become more responsive, both to health challenges as they emerge and to the opinions and needs of the people served.
I would like show you the extent to which your letter to Olga Sheean acts in direct contempt of these principles. I shall do this through an analysis of the exact words that you wrote.
You say: you would “like” to acknowledge receipt of Ms Sheean’s document. Please note that receiving an acknowledgment of receipt for a submission from the UN on the WHO EMF Project is a completely unprecedented event. A formal submission made in 2015 by over 200 of the world’s top researchers in this field was completely ignored by WHO. The existence of that particular submission was only acknowledged by Dr Emilie van Deventer, head of the EMF Project, after being queried by a journalist in South Africa.
If you read my queries below, you will see many other instances of top scientists, international appeals, petitions, and submissions made to WHO on this subject — including two from myself — that were completely ignored. One thing that can be said for certain is that WHO does not “like” to respond to any queries about non-ionising radiation and health. Therefore, I would sincerely like to commend you for actually taking the time to respond to this submission and for doing so in a polite way. This is truly worthy of an international press release just in itself: The world receives an acknowledgement of receipt from the World Health Organization! In all my years of dealing with intractable bureaucracies of various sorts — including the vast and impenetrable bureaucratic structures of apartheid South Africa — I would rate WHO as easily the least responsive and least accountable organisation I have ever encountered, by far.
You say: “Thank you for sharing your concerns.” Ms Sheean is presently recovering from brain surgery to remove an acoustic neuroma, a tumour that has been linked in many studies (including the recent large-scale US National Toxicology Program study) with mobile phone radiation. If you are indeed grateful to her for taking on the vast task of preparing this submission while recovering from major surgery, then perhaps you can be persuaded actually to address some of her concerns in an honest and direct way.
Now we get to the most difficult part of your letter, where you say: “I would also like to reassure you that…”
Please take my word for it that the words that follow this statement could not possibly have been calculated to reassure us less, than if you had set out in a deliberately calculated way to terrify and dismay us, and throw us into the very deepest sense of despair that nothing ever will change at WHO. You go on to say:
…WHO will make sure its procedures regarding convening experts, avoiding experts’ conflicts of interest and developing evidence-based scientific positions are upheld during the development of its scientific position regarding electromagnetic fields and health.”
This statement can only be interpreted as a direct death sentence for millions of people around the world.
You speak of “convening experts” in health research; yet the “expert” put in charge of this convening is a microwave engineer with absolutely no health, medical, or biological background. She is demonstrably unfit to make any decisions regarding medical or biological research, yet WHO puts her in charge of the world’s health with regard to microwave radiation.
Dr Bustreo: let me give you an analogy. Suppose an international team of neurotoxicologists and other medical researchers is assembled to look at the effects of lead poisoning on young people. A cursory inspection reveals that the major source of exposure is lead paint. Therefore, WHO appoints a paint engineer to direct and supervise the medical doctors, biologists, and health researchers who are looking into the physiology and toxicology of lead poisoning. Would these medical doctors accept guidance and instruction on neurotoxicology from a paint engineer? I think not. Yet we are expected to accept without question that a microwave engineer with no health or medical background, and a complete disregard for all public submissions on the matter, is an appropriate person to lead research on microwave radiation and health.
Until Dr van Deventer is summarily removed from her post, your assurances regarding “convening experts” and avoiding conflicts of interest are totally void. We can see the industry bias acting right at the top, in the very person who is doing the convening. Many top scientific researchers and even government authorities have pointed out that Dr van Deventer never responds to any submissions or appeals or queries, and displays all the biases one would expect of an industry engineer. Yet here you are apparently endorsing her as the person to continue to meet these challenges. Your reassurances, therefore, are completely hollow and have to be rejected.
We have also seen exactly what the phrase “evidence-based scientific positions” means in WHO parlance. You have been given direct evidence of how WHO has completely ignored the tens of thousands of scientific papers showing a vast range of health symptoms and biological effects from low-level microwave radiation. For example, I pointed out to Dr Emilie van Deventer in 2009, that despite the fact that every single study ever conducted on health around masts shows a clear pattern of health problems, including drastically elevated cancer rates, WHO says there is “no evidence” of any harm from base stations. This is an outright lie, that has been perpetuated by WHO for years. Is this what you mean by an “evidence-based scientific position”? This is not a rhetorical question. You are now associating yourself with direct, blatant lies, and I wish to confirm that you are aware of this fact.
I and many others have pointed out repeatedly that the blanket irradiation of entire landscapes with microwaves is an unplanned scientific experiment that is being carried out on the world’s population without any notion of informed consent. In particular, I have raised the issue of microwave masts located in school and kindergarten playgrounds (as directly promoted by WHO in a fact sheet, until I pointed this out and it was changed); and I have pointed to several studies in mammals showing that low-level microwave radiation causes genetic damage to the ovarian follicles. This implies permanent genetic damage to the species, passed down the female line in the mitochondrial DNA, for the rest of the existence of that species. I am 100% certain that this damage is being done right now, in girls’ schools across South Africa where I investigated field strengths around boarding hostels and classrooms. This is quite apart from a multitude of studies showing severe genetic damage to human sperm from mobile phone radiation, another catastrophic source of genetic damage in the human species.
Now, in 2006, the EMF Project issued a guideline to researchers: DO NOT RESEARCH CANCER AROUND MASTS. Any researcher looking for funds would think twice before taking up this subject, after such a warning (the existence of which I discovered in a paper by Dr Michael Kundi of Medical University of Vienna). So not only is an unplanned experiment with no informed consent being carried out on vulnerable human beings. WHO issues a specific directive not to collect results of this illegal experiment, which flouts all international law, including the Nuremberg Code, signed after WW2, which specifically forbids human experimentation without informed consent.
Dr Bustreo, your special responsibility is family, women’s, and children’s health. You clearly approve of unplanned microwave experiments on girls to see how their genetics will respond to this radiation; and you clearly approve of specifically avoiding collecting the results of this experiment, so that the only possible way we will find the results of this “trial” is when genetic anomalies and mutations start appearing on a large scale in the human population. This is the overt policy of the WHO International EMF Project. Is this what you call responsible science towards women and children? Can you defend these policies, especially as a children’s advocate? Because this is what you are now directly promoting.
You need to understand that we have seen what WHO’s scientific “procedures” are, how they are developed, and what standards they represent. You “reassure” us that these procedures will be “upheld”. Are you truly incapable of understanding that this is the very worst “reassurance” you can possibly make? We have seen your operations. We have seen your constant lies, evasions, and deceptions. We now need concrete evidence that WHO is aware that its scientific procedures have visibly been completely compromised and are a grotesque parody of any notion of “accountability” or “responsiveness”, as evidenced by your own letter and its meaningless platitudes. We need evidence that WHO is aware of appeals by thousands of people for policies that take account of the terrible human suffering that is happening around the world as a result of microwave radiation; suffering that WHO deliberately, cruelly, and viciously compounds by serially insulting victims and accusing them of being “mental cases”, even when one of these victims is the former Director General of WHO itself, Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland, who has suffered direct insults of this nature from the former head of the EMF Project, Dr Michael Repacholi.
Dr Bustreo: I (along with many other researchers) allege directly that WHO is culpable of crimes against humanity for its policies on radiating the entire population of the world with microwaves, with absolutely no warnings given, especially in the Third World, which is now the only growth market for this technology. If you look below, you will see an extremely conservative estimate that your industry-driven policies will see an absolute minimum of 150 million people killed or incapacitated. You are now directly and personally culpable for these policies and their continued implementation, and I hereby put you on notice that unless you display a proper understanding of Olga Sheean’s appeal and the issues involved, your name will be registered — along with Dr Emilie van Deventer and Dr Margaret Chan — as being directly and personally complicit in the greatest genocide this planet has ever seen.
Are you prepared to face such charges in an international court? Or are you prepared to demonstrate here that you are at some level responsive to human suffering and the deepest health crisis this planet has ever experienced? You claim that you are concerned about suicide and depression in teenagers: please look at the evidence I give below, that teen suicide was completely unknown in South Africa and Swaziland until the rollout of mobile phone technology; and that teen suicide is now a continuous epidemic in these countries. I speak of a 3% illness rate in the population: are you aware that the US CDC now says that more than 2% of all US children fall in the “autism spectrum”, another illness I am certain (as an experienced education researcher) is associated with mobile phone radiation, both from the timing of this pandemic and from the research? These children’s lives have been destroyed, their families’ lives have been destroyedYou are responsible for children and families around the world. Do you really have no heart at all? Do you feel absolutely nothing for the terrible danger this planet is facing and WHO’s direct role in promoting it?
Judging by your letter, you are actively keen on promoting the status quo and the vast experiment on radiating entire generations of children with pulsed microwaves on ever-proliferating frequencies. With the imminent rollout of “5G” and the complete saturation irradiation of the entire planet with dense microwaves, this is now literally the very last chance we have to get WHO to stop for one second and ask: should we allow this drastic step to happen with absolutely no research, no warning, no mitigation at all?
I am now very nearly at the point where I acknowledge defeat, and accept that WHO will never, ever, respond to a comprehensive journalistic query on its policies regarding EM radiation. This means that I have to take this matter up on the ground with WHO in Swaziland, and alert our national press that WHO is directly committing genocide in our country. This will have untold consequences in a nation that is almost totally in the grip of the World Health Organization, due to our status of having the highest HIV/Aids rate in the world. The world’s top researchers have told me: the most pervasive single consequence of microwave radiation is severely depleted immunity. To radiate immuno-compromised people with microwaves is a straight death sentence. Please be assured that I will NOT allow the World Health Organization to destroy my nation and kill our people without a fight, and this fight will be taken directly to your country director and the UNDP here. They have already been alerted; they have already signalled their complete ignorance regarding this matter and have referred me to Geneva, notwithstanding my warning that WHO Geneva does not respond to any queries on this subject, ever.
We are tired of WHO officials who rely entirely on ignorance for their policy stances. Would you kindly at least ensure that the WHO country representative for Swaziland, Dr Ketsela MENGESTU, is adequately briefed on this subject and is aware that there are severe problems with the public in the way that WHO operates in this field, to which she will now have to respond.
I await any response from you or the WHO Media Office, or any UN or WHO official anywhere, that indicates that any one of you is prepared to make a considered, intelligent, intelligible comment on the Call for Action made by Olga Sheean. In particular, the WHO Media Office’s continued silence here is speaking volumes; and they are also at risk of being listed as complicit in a conspiracy to commit crimes against humanity. Of all the responsible parties, it is actually the media officials at WHO who are the most complicit. The science is settled: microwaves are dangerous, especially for children, and a warning should be given to the world. That is all we are asking. This is not a scientific issue. This is a policy and a media issue; and also a matter of simple humanity, which seems to be totally lacking at the World Health Organization. Perhaps you would care to act to counter this longstanding impression of your organisation and show that you are capable of recognising your own terrible cruelty and doing something to stop it.
Yours sincerely

Media Office, World Health Organization, Geneva
Dear Sirs,
I am still trying to get any response to my request for comment from any of the offices concerned with the issue of wireless technology and health (see emails below). This is now well over a month since I initiated this inquiry.
In the meantime, two further authorities have come forward to protest strongly against the industry bias of the WHO EMF Project. These are Prof Oleg Grigoriev, head of the Russian government’s radiation protection authority; and a wide-ranging consortium of organisations in Europe, all of which are adamant that the WHO policy on wireless technology is unacceptable and must be changed immediately.
I have approached Prof Grigoriev; he informed me that this letter was hand-delivered to WHO’s offices, that he has received no reply from Dr van Deventer, and does not expect any reply, as she basically never responds to any submissions. This is from one of the most important government agencies in the world in this field.
Here is the BioInitiative submission on WHO’s industry bias, which I understand was also totally ignored. This submission again came from some of the world’s top scientists in this field.
The policy of the United Nations and the WHO is simply never to comment or respond to any queries on radiation and health. This is a historical pattern of denial that must now cease: here are two further examples of submissions ignored by Dr Emilie van Deventer. Thousands of people all over the world are voicing their strongest objections to WHO policies and personnel. WHO must now give a response that indicates that it is aware of this worldwide rejection of the credentials, credibility, and track record of the incumbent, Dr Emilie van Deventer. Unless this is acknowledged, WHO stands contempt of the public and of the scientific community.
Your continued silence on this issue only makes you more culpable. The Media Office of the World Health Organization is hereby held responsible for ensuring that these queries are given proper, considered answers that reveal awareness that a total breakdown in any notion of “good faith” has occurred here; and take active steps to address this, and show that the United Nations is actually capable of demonstrating that it understands the meaning of the word “accountability”.
I await a reply from any agency, office, or individual in the United Nations bureaucracy that indicates any presence of understanding of what is at issue here.
Yours sincerely

Attention: Mr Christian Lindmeier
Dear Mr Lindmeier,
I just spoke with you regarding a query made to Dr Margaret Chan’s office, regarding the health hazards of wireless technology. This query is forwarded below, in the form of two emails. You will see that it has also been addressed the UN Secretary General and the team leader of the WHO International EMF Project.
I would be very grateful if you could ensure that these three offices are made aware of this mail that has been sent to them, and help me in getting an acknowledgement of receipt. The main person from whom I am seeking a response is Dr Margaret Chan. You will see that her office has a history of refusing to acknowledge receipt of any submissions made to her on the subject at hand, no matter that they come from the top scientists in the world in this field. We now need to get a considered response from her on this issue.
Please will you let me know what the best way of getting a response is from Dr Chan. Ideally, I would like to arrange a telephonic interview with her, so that we can clarify the reasons behind her apparent complete lack of engagement with this most critical issue, which directly affects the life and health of virtually every human being on this planet.
Please note that as a freelance journalist, I have written for a very wide range of publications over the last 20 years, mostly South African newspapers and magazines. At present, as a freelancer, I write articles on scientific issues for the Times of Swaziland, the main newspaper in this country, which has carried several articles on masts and health. I have already approached the WHO country representative in Swaziland, Dr Mengestu, who says I must get a response from Geneva. You will see she has been copied in on this correspondence.
Thank you very much for your assistance, it is much appreciated.
Yours faithfully

Dear Dr Chan
The email below was sent to your office, with a special request for confirmation of receipt of the call for action by Olga Sheean regarding the WHO International EMF Project.
Two weeks have passed and I have had no acknowledgement of any sort from any of the offices concerned. Since you are the person most directly responsible for this project, I am therefore specifically requesting you to acknowledge these communications and their content.
Dr Chan, your track record on the issue of electromagnetic radiation shows a deliberate pattern of complete neglect and apparently willful ignorance. I refer in the email below to several petitions and submissions to your office, including from the world’s most eminent scientists, and note that you consistently completely ignore them and refuse even to acknowledge receipt of them.
I draw attention to another submission made to you, specifically regarding the make-up of the International EMF Project and its industry bias, by the researcher Dr Dariusz Leszczynski, formerly of the Finnish government radiation protection agency. He reports that not only did you not reply to his letter, you passed it straight on to Dr Emilie van Deventer, the very person he was complaining about. Dr Leszczynksi describes this as “Handling an Inquiry, the WHO-style”.
Further, a submission to you from the eminent researcher Dr Lennart Hardell, providing clear evidence of increases in brain cancers and other problems with microwave exposure, also appears to have been completely ignored.
Given this pattern of complete refusal on your part even to acknowledge the existence of this issue, we have to raise the case of your predecessor as Director-General, Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Prime Minister of Norway, and a physician specialising in environmental health. Dr Brundtland was known to be sympathetic to sufferers of microwave radiation, and claimed that she too was sensitive to mobile phone radiation.
Dr Brundtland served only one term as Director-General, leaving quite abruptly in 2003. There was considerable speculation at the time that her stance on wireless technology may have been the reason for her departure. You are now completing your second term as DG; and you have completely avoided any engagement with the issue. The question must now be raised as to whether you owe your tenure at WHO to your denialist stance on wireless technology and its health risks. This is the context in which we now insist on acknowledgement of this correspondence.
We note that Dr Michael Repacholi, founder of the WHO International EMF Project, has made special public efforts to insult and denigrate Dr Brundtlandfor her stance on mobile phones, and imply that she is basically hysterical. If this is what one of the world’s top politicians, a Director-General of the World Health Organization, and a practising physician, has to endure from this self-appointed authority, what chance do ordinary citizens have, who are suffering from microwave exposure?
Dr Repacholi has also promoted depleted uranium as safe except for direct ingestion by children, despite copious evidence that this is not true, and there are allegations that WHO has acted to cover this up, in particular citing Repacholi as responsible for censoring studies that indicated problems. Iraqi doctors have called the use of depleted uranium in their country “genocide”, and I here note that this is the second time that Repacholi has now been accused of fostering genocide.
Dr Chan, you bear total responsibility for the appalling industry bias and lack of scientific standards at the WHO International EMF Project. The 24/7 blanket microwave irradiation of the population of our entire planet, without any long-term safety guidelines, occurred squarely on your watch. The time has come for you to start facing the incalculable consequences of your actions.
Again, I most strongly now insist that some acknowledgement of this correspondence be made, otherwise I will have to escalate this inquiry; in particular with the local media in my home nation of Swaziland and in neighbouring countries, where the wireless industry hides behind the impregnable firewalls of WHO guidelines and United Nations bureaucracy, in order to put microwave towers in school and kindergarten playgrounds.
Yours sincerely

Dear Mr Guterres, Drs Chan and van Deventer:
Wireless technology: WHO’s role in corporate genocide
I am writing as a journalist, scientific editor, and researcher covering the call for action by Olga Sheean and the more than 2,000 signatories to her petition to have microwave engineer Dr Emilie van Deventer removed immediately from her position in charge of the WHO International EMF Project, which sets the global research agenda and standards for exposure to radiation from wireless technologies; and for her to be replaced by someone with a medical or health background who is sensitive to the issues involved and takes immediate action to alert the public to the proven dangers of radiofrequency and microwave radiation.
I understand that you were all couriered hard copies of this submission; in the first place, I need to confirm that your offices have received this document and are aware of its contents. Please note that obtaining acknowledgement of receipt of submissions on this matter from the UN and WHO has proved virtually impossible in the past, as will be described in detail later.
Having confirmed receipt, please will you indicate whether and when we can expect a considered response from your respective offices. We cannot allow this matter yet again to pass without any comment from the relevant authorities and must insist on establishing an agreed channel to obtain such comment. If obtaining comment requires direct lobbying of UN and WHO representatives in my home country of Swaziland, this will be done.
Please also note that in order to separate my journalistic role from my personal interests in this matter, I may write under the nom de plume Fred Malherbe (@fred_malherbe). This is in no way an attempt to be anonymous, merely a convenience I adopted in 1999 to separate my editing work from my writing.
This is the third major petition addressed to the United Nations on this issue. In the year 2000, a Swiss appeal signed by thousands of people begged the UN not to take advice from the chairman of the self-appointed International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), Dr Michael Repacholi, who set up WHO’s International EMF Project in May 1996. Part of this appeal (translated from the German) reads:
Dr. Michael Repacholi is to be dismissed from his post. He has revoked his own research results, which have proved the harmfulness of electromagnetic radiation, when this seemed to him to be appropriate for reasons of opportunity. We no longer accept his false statements, which he disseminated as the honorary chairman of ICNIRP on behalf of WHO worldwide. He is no longer credible and is no longer viable to preside over such an important body.
The only response of the United Nations (according to a personal communication from the petitioners some years ago) was to say that they did not employ Dr Repacholi and therefore could not fire him. However, Repacholi states that he personally established the WHO International EMF Project in 1996. In 2000 he appeared before an Australian Senate inquiry claiming to speak as a WHO representative, and he ran the International EMF Project until 2006, which clearly contradicts the UN’s assertion that Repacholi was not one of their officials at the time.
All the scientific evidence presented in this 2000 appeal to the United Nations was flatly ignored.
In 2015, a distinguished group of over 200 scientists led by Dr Martin Blank of Columbia University made an appeal to the UN Secretary-General and to WHO to address the growing international health crisis caused by wireless technology. This appeal pointed to a clear contradiction in WHO policy, in that its International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2011 classified wireless radiation in all its forms to be a Class 2B possible human carcinogen and issued a clear precautionary warning to minimise exposures; yet the EMF Project flatly refuses, despite all the scientific evidence, to issue one word of precaution to the world.
These eminent scientists were not even afforded the courtesy of an acknowledgement of receipt from the United Nations Secretary-General, the Director-General of WHO, or the International EMF Project. This stunning display of contempt for top scientists, all of whom had published peer-reviewed journal articles on the issue at hand, proves that WHO cannot be regarded as having any credibility whatsoever as an agency promoting public health in this field. A mandate for public health requires sensitivity and openness to the public; in this respect especially, Dr Emilie van Deventer has completely failed to demonstrate even a semblance of public accountability.
Now in 2017, another major appeal, from a former international civil servant familiar with the UN, Ms Olga Sheean, has been submitted to you. This time, we are determined to get a proper, considered response from the United Nations and the World Health Organization.
In this context, I would like to mention my own experience. In 2009, I wrote an appeal titled An SOS from South Africa to Dr van Deventer, whom I had met at a conference in Johannesburg in 2007, begging her to take seriously a series of apparent epidemics of radiation-induced illnesses that I investigated in South Africa, evidenced by scores of doctors’ letters and affidavits from people who fell ill immediately after a microwave tower started operating in their neighbourhood.
After a month of intensive lobbying, during which I contacted hundreds of doctors working for WHO in Africa asking them to help me secure acknowledgement of receipt from the International EMF Project, I finally received an email from Dr Emilie van Deventer, saying she was aware of my submission, which had been couriered, faxed, and emailed to her offices in Geneva. That was the very last word I ever heard from Dr van Deventer, who otherwise totally ignored my appeal, just as she has totally ignored every appeal from outside her own carefully vetted channels.
In 2016, I wrote an updated appeal to Dr van Deventer, showing her that over 95% of all studies on base stations worldwide showed a clear pattern of adverse health effects, including significantly raised cancer rates. Again, there was no acknowledgement or response to this appeal. In 2006, flying directly in the face of the scientific evidence, the EMF Project specifically directed researchers NOT to look into cancer around masts.
However, I have detected one — and only one — indirect response by Dr van Deventer to my 2009 appeal. I had noted that WHO stated the following in a fact sheet:
“Siting base stations near kindergartens, schools and playgrounds may need special consideration. Open communication and discussion between the mobile phone operator, local council and the public during the planning stages for a new antenna can help create public understanding and greater acceptance of a new facility.”
http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs193/en/
My query to Dr van Deventer at the time was the following:
…If WHO’s statement is analysed carefully, it will be seen to be clearly biased towards helping “create greater acceptance of a new facility”.
I have to ask you, with all respect: why is the World Health Organization, which is dedicated to public health, advocating “greater acceptance” of new base stations, especially in schools, kindergartens and playgrounds? Why does WHO have an interest in actively promoting acceptance of microwave technology? How is this part of WHO’s brief as a public health body? I would most sincerely appreciate an answer to this question, because on the face of it, WHO is openly biased towards the operators in trying to facilitate “greater acceptance” of base stations — even in schools and kindergartens, against best international practice.
As stated, I never received a response from Dr van Deventer. However, if you consult this particular WHO fact sheet, you will see that this wording, promoting the active acceptance of microwave masts in kindergartens and schools by WHO, has since been removed. Obviously, this statement was revealing too much of the true agenda of the World Health Organization in support of the wireless industry donations that keep the International EMF Project going.
Nonetheless, given that ICNIRP and WHO have not changed their guidelines or their advice since 1998, I do regard this editing of their fact sheet to be a possible, actual, considered response (albeit indirect) to a query from the public: a first for the International EMF Project, even if it is to take active steps to cover up its industry-friendly agenda.
In 2010, the Electromagnetic Radiation Research Foundation of South Africa invited Mr Barrie Trower, the British government’s former top scientific expert on microwave warfare, to come to South Africa and Botswana to help in fighting microwave masts that were causing illnesses. Mr Trower is a controversial figure who, I am now certain, is a genuine whistleblower on a par with Edward Snowden. He revealed that the governments of the West have long researched pulsed microwave frequencies and their effects on brain and body; and had weaponised this technology and implemented it in attacks on both military and civilian targets decades ago, specifically mentioning the microwave radiation of women protesting the Greenham Common nuclear airbase in the 1980s and confirming that this was done deliberately to induce all kinds of illnesses in these women. He says this weaponry was also extensively deployed against the IRA in Northern Ireland.
Mr Trower was a highly trained interrogator who successfully extracted most of the frequencies used as weapons from captured Soviet “microwave spies” infiltrated into the United Kingdom. No coercion was used beyond a “chat over tea”. He also debriefed Soviet-bloc dissidents who had been subjected to sustained microwave attack. When he saw the exact same carrier frequencies, pulsed modulations, and intensities being used in mobile phone technology as were used by microwave weapons, and that entire populations including children were being subjected to this extremely dangerous radiation, he broke with the Official Secrets Act he had signed and went public with his concerns.
Having met Mr Trower and seen how his every claim is backed with copious scientific data, I now repeat a warning that he has given many times, and that has been given by many other authorities, which is that a minimum of 3% of the population is highly sensitive to low-level microwaves and will become ill or die as a result of exposure.
This figure received dramatic confirmation with the recent findings of the US National Toxicology Program (NTP). This government laboratory carried out one of the most rigorous radiation experiments to date on rats, and the findings were clear: 3% of male rats in particular contracted gliomas, or brain cancer, and tumours equivalent to acoustic neuromas. Many studies show that brain cancers and acoustic neuromas in human beings are associated with microwave radiation. The NTP felt that these results were so significant that they released them early.
If we take this figure of 3%, and consider that a minimum of 5 billion people worldwide are being irradiated at close range with microwaves at these levels, then an absolute rock-bottom minimum of 150 million people are going to be killed or incapacitated by this radiation.
Mr Guterres, as UN Secretary-General, you face many dire challenges around the world. With regard to the health impacts of wireless technology, you and your organisation stand to be held directly, personally, and legally responsible for the death or disability of 150 million or more people. These deaths are occurring right now, all over the world, and I will be happy to provide some of the names and details of people who I am certain have already died from this radiation, including people who developed tumours on their faces exactly where they held their phones — highly malignant cancers of a type that hadnever been seen by pathologists in South Africa before. Harvard Medical School, which was consulted over one such case in Johannesburg in 2004, said that about a dozen of these strange new cancers had been reported worldwide, while denying that there was any evidence of an environmental cause, despite the records they had been provided of this victim’s extensive mobile phone use.
I therefore urge you, Mr Guterres, to consider very carefully your responsibilities in this matter. You are a trained telecommunications scientist and are therefore in a unique position to assess this situation. You were also UN High Commissioner for Refugees. On behalf of “EMF Refugees” everywhere — who have had to abandon their homes and jobs in order to try find a patch of Earth where they are not being microwaved to death — I appeal to you to consider this issue with the utmost seriousness.
In one interview, Mr Barrie Trower described the devastating effects of pulsed microwave radiation on the DNA of all living beings. When the interviewer said that this sounded “worse than nuclear war”, Mr Trower immediately replied: “Oh, much worse than nuclear war, absolutely.” This is the considered opinion of the British government’s top expert on microwave warfare, who was tasked with providing exactly such assessments for the UK military. He also personally went through several full nuclear alerts as an active intelligence agent and knows precisely the devastation that nuclear war can cause.
Mr Trower points to two particular risks of this radiation: one is that of teen suicide, which he says always rises where there are masts. I note in my SOS from South Africa that the arrival of mobile phones coincided with an absolutely unprecedented wave of suicides engulfing black teenagers in that country. I spent 15 years working in black education in South Africa until the end of 1994; in all that time, as an active education researcher, I never came across one single case of even attempted suicide in black teenagers. Since 1995, the first full year of mobile phone use in South Africa, teen suicide in the black population has become pandemic in that country, with 15% of intensive care beds at Soweto’s biggest hospital being taken up with cases of organophosphate poisoning, generally teenagers who took rat poison.
Mr Trower also warned of several scientific papers showing genetic damage to the ovarian follicles of mammals from low-level microwaves; this may create permanent genetic damage in the human species that is passed down the female line via mitochondrial DNA, causing genetic illnesses for the remainder of the existence of the human race. With pulsed microwave radiation, we are almost certainly creating the greatest artificial mutation of the human species in its entire existence.
These are just some of the hazards facing our planet; in thousands of scientific studies, this radiation has been shown to affect all forms of life, from single-celled organisms to trees and other plants, staple food crops of all kinds including maize, pollinating bees and other insects, birds, reptiles, and mammals.
We are facing a global holocaust of unprecedented proportions; and it is ALLdue to the rank failure of the World Health Organization to act even remotely as an agency truly concerned with public health.
British law recognises corporate manslaughter as a crime, where industries knowingly create hazards that lead to death. The wireless industry, with the complete connivance of the World Health Organization, is engaged in what can only be described as corporate genocide: the removal from the planet of scores of millions of people, simply because their physiology is not compatible with even short-term exposure to microwave radiation. This physical incompatibility with technology is a crime in the modern era to be punished with extreme suffering and death, and to be mocked and humiliated by a medical science that regards these illnesses as psychological or “idiopathic”, to quote the World Health Organization’s preferred terminology in this particular instance.
Mr Guterres; Dr Chan; Dr van Deventer: do you wish to be held directly and personally responsible for the extermination or incapacitation of over 150 million human beings? This is your minimal culpability, unless you act very fast indeed and replace Dr van Deventer with someone of proven integrity and sensitivity to human issues in the realm of health.
Having met and interacted personally with Dr Emilie van Deventer, I can testify that she seemed to have no real clue whatsoever about the task she took on in 2006. It fell to me in 2007 to explain to her the EMF Project’s policy on precaution, which is that it should be avoided because it “alarms” people. In this vein, please consider carefully this quote from Dr Paulo Vecchia, who succeeded Dr Michael Repacholi as chairman of ICNIRP:
“Precautionary actions to address public concerns may increase rather than mitigate worries and fears of the public. This constitutes a health detriment and should be prevented as other adverse effects of EMF.”
In other words, according to the people who advise WHO, precaution is literally bad for your health; the worry of avoiding radiation is as dangerous as exposingyourself to it. This utter insanity proves that ICNIRP and WHO are not here to protect the public. They are here to protect industry, no matter how many people die in the process.
Dr Vecchia has stated that ICNIRP does not respond to epidemiological data, only to evidence of a “fully worked-out mechanism” that can explain deaths. ICNIRP is based on the axiom that “non-ionising” radiation can only affect biological tissue by heating it. Thus, a scientific paper from Brazil showing possibly thousands of excess cancer deaths occurring near mobile phone masts in just one city is ignored by ICNIRP. Dead bodies piling up around masts mean nothing to these self-appointed protectors of public health. They demand a “mechanism” to explain it, before they will look at it.
Therefore, in closing, I draw your attention to one single scientific paper, Friedman et al. (2007), which shows that just two minutes of low-level mobile phone radiation causes living human cells to be flooded with free radicals, a known pathway for promoting cancer. The full mechanism for this biochemical cascade was deduced by this research team: in response to mobile phone radiation, a single identified enzyme (NADH oxidase) triggers the “ERK” reaction, which results in severe oxidative stress. The ERK cascade occurs specifically in the glial or brain cells, and this may well explain why the rats exposed to whole-body radiation in the NTP trial suffered gliomas or brain cancer — not because these rats were holding tiny phones up to their heads, but because the brain is uniquely sensitive to this radiation, whether from masts or handsets.
The ERK (or Extracellular signal-Regulated Kinase) cascade is crucial to the process of long-term potentiation, in which the brain hard-rewires its synapses in response to brainwave signals; this may be why this biochemical reaction is uniquely sensitive to pulsed microwave signals, which are also known to change brainwave patterns at extremely low radiation levels. A 2014 document from WHO lists 26 studies that show brainwave changes with mobile phone radiation at levels below the ICNIRP guidelines. These brainwave changes may also be hard-wired into the structure of the brain through the pathological activation of the ERK cascade, a possibility that is now being investigated by Dr Friedman’s team.
Friedman et al. (2007) has been cited over 200 times in the literature; I have checked with Dr Joseph Friedman in Israel and all of these papers reproduce, confirm, and amplify his team’s findings. Severe oxidative stress is known to cause (1) a wide range of neurological diseases, (2) a wide range of metabolic issues, and (3) a wide range of genetic problems, including interfering with DNA repair and promoting cancer.
Therefore, the entire basis of ICNIRP’s and WHO’s advice — that microwave radiation can only have thermal effects — has been conclusively proven to be false, and a clear and complete mechanism has been elucidated that explains many of the symptoms reported in relation to this radiation. ICNIRP and the International EMF Project are deliberately ignoring the science, in order to propagate their industry-friendly line. This is no longer acceptable. The public is waking up to these dangers, and the United Nations must now take cognisance of the realities and issue a precautionary warning to the world, especially for children, that microwave exposure is dangerous. That is all we have ever asked of the World Health Organization, whose doctors at IARC have urged precaution; however, the microwave engineers in charge of the International EMF Project have refused to take this simple step. These engineers must immediately be removed and replaced with appropriately qualified health professionals who are committed to taking action to protect the people of the world.
I await confirmation of receipt by your respective offices of Olga Sheean’s call for action and your considered comments on the realities she has put to you.
Yours faithfully
